Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to provide a comprehensive examination of personal characteristics, health status, diabetes experience, and perceived social support from family and perceived social support from friends as predictors of self-management in adults with diabetes mellitus. Perceived social support was measured using the Perceived Social Support from Friends and Family Scale (Procidano & Heller, 1983). Self-management was measured using the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Scale (Toobert, Hampson, & Glasgow, 2000), as well as a hemoglobin A1c test, a biomedical indicator of self-management efforts. Participants included 50 individuals who reported moderate levels of support from family and friends, but significantly more support from family members. Participants also reported the most adherence to taking medications and least adherence to exercising. Additionally, a modicum of support from family was associated with high adherence to diet and exercise. Economic and diabetes intervention implications are discussed, as well directions for future research.
