Book Synopsis Out in Central Pennsylvania by : William Burton
Download or read book Out in Central Pennsylvania written by William Burton and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outside of major metropolitan areas, the fight for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights has had its own unique and rich history—one that is quite different from the national narrative set in New York and California. Out in Central Pennsylvania highlights one facet of this lesser-known but equally important story, immersing readers in the LGBTQ community building and social networking that has taken place in the small cities and towns in the heart of Pennsylvania from the 1960s to the present day. Drawing from oral histories and the archives of the LGBT Center of Central PA History Project, this book recounts the innovative ways that LGBTQ central Pennsylvanians organized to demand civil rights and to improve their quality of life in a region that often rejected them. Full of compelling stories of individuals seeking community and grappling with inequity, harassment, and discrimination, and featuring a distinctive trove of historical photographs, Out in Central Pennsylvania is a local story with national implications. It brings rural and small-town queer life out into the open and explores how LGBTQ identity and social advocacy networks can form outside of a large urban environment.

Book Synopsis Exploring Pennsylvania Through Project-Based Learning by : Carole Marsh
Download or read book Exploring Pennsylvania Through Project-Based Learning written by Carole Marsh and published by Gallopade International. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Pennsylvania through Project-Based Leaning includes 50 well-thought-out projects designed for grades 3-5. In assigning your students projects that dig into PennsylvaniaÕs geography, history, government, economy, current events, and famous people, you will deepen their appreciation and understanding of Pennsylvania while simultaneously improving their analytical skills and ability to recognize patterns and big-picture themes. Project-based learning today is much different than the craft-heavy classroom activities popular in the past. Inquiry, planning, research, collaboration, and analysis are key components of project-based learning activities today. However, that doesnÕt mean creativity, individual expression, and fun are out. They definitely arenÕt! Each project is designed to help students gain important knowledge and skills that are derived from standards and key concepts at the heart of academic subject areas. Students are asked to analyze and solve problems, to gather and interpret data, to develop and evaluate solutions, to support their answers with evidence, to think critically in a sustained way, and to use their newfound knowledge to formulate new questions worthy of exploring. While some projects are more complex and take longer than others, they all are set up in the same structure. Each begins with the central project-driving questions, proceeds through research and supportive questions, has the student choose a presentation option, and ends with a broader-view inquiry. Rubrics for reflection and assessments are included, too. This consistent framework will make it easier for you assign projects and for your students to follow along and consistently meet expectations. Encourage your students to take charge of their projects as much as possible. As a teacher, you can act as a facilitator and guide. The projects are structured such that students can often work through the process on their own or through cooperation with their classmates.
Book Synopsis Pennsylvania in Public Memory by : Carolyn Kitch
Download or read book Pennsylvania in Public Memory written by Carolyn Kitch and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What stories do we tell about America’s once-great industries at a time when they are fading from the landscape? Pennsylvania in Public Memory attempts to answer that question, exploring the emergence of a heritage culture of industry and its loss through the lens of its most representative industrial state. Based on news coverage, interviews, and more than two hundred heritage sites, this book traces the narrative themes that shape modern public memory of coal, steel, railroading, lumber, oil, and agriculture, and that collectively tell a story about national as well as local identity in a changing social and economic world.

Download or read book Animals that Saw Me written by Ed Panar and published by Ice Plant. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roaming the natural and urban world with a camera for over 16 years, often alone, on foot and keeping a low profile, Ed Panar has repeatedly been caught in the act of photography--not by other people, but by a random assortment of familiar animals: cows, cats, frogs, dogs, turtles, deer, geese. The animal sees Ed; Ed sees the animal. An unspoken message passes between them. If the photographer is lucky, the moment is captured on film, cataloged and tagged for future reference. In Animals That Saw Me (Volume One), Panar brings together the first collection of his most surprising and unexpected encounters with ordinary beasts--a brief, beautifully deadpan field study of the uncanny moment of recognition between species. What exactly have these animals seen? Panar's photographs serve as a reminder that we must appear at least as strange to them as they do to us.

Book Synopsis The Pennsylvania Turnpike by : Mitchell E. Dakelman
Download or read book The Pennsylvania Turnpike written by Mitchell E. Dakelman and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004-06-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pennsylvania Turnpike is one of the best-known highways in the United States. Most Pennsylvania Turnpike travelers are unaware that its construction was inspired by the route of the never completed South Pennsylvania Railroad. In the 1930s, men of great vision conceived, planned, and built the nation's first long-distance superhighway using the abandoned railroad's partially finished tunnels as its foundation. Originally predicted to be a financial failure, the project was a tremendous success, and the turnpike came to be known as the World's Greatest Highway. Over the years, the Pennsylvania Turnpike was expanded and improved, laying the groundwork for the nation's Interstate Highway System. The Pennsylvania Turnpike draws from the extensive photograph collection in the Pennsylvania State Archives. Many were taken by photographers hired by both the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and its contractors, and most have never been published previously.
