Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania Archives, Vol. 1 The Organization of the Division of Public Records in the State Library and the subsequent classification of thousands of the State Documents brought to light many unpublished Muster Rolls of the French and Indian War and of the War of the Revolution. Many of the Muster Rolls published in Volumes 2, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 of the Second Series and Volume 23 of the Third Series of the Pennsylvania Archives were found, and a comparison of the originals with these printed lists resulted in the discovery of numerous errors due to carelessness in copying. As a large portion of the correspondence of the Division relates to names included in these rolls, the editor concluded that they should be re-printed, with the addition of such new material as could be obtained. In this conclusion he had the warm approval of Governor Pennypacker, Dr. John W.Jordan and the Custodian of Records, Mr. Luther R. Kelker. Through the courtesy of Dr. John W.Jordan copies of muster rolls of soldiers who had served in the early wars of the Province of Pennsylvania belonging to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania were carefully copied and the material included in the present publication. Every effort was used to ascertain the location of military papers throughout the State and copies of many valuable manuscripts have been secured for filing in the Division of Public Records. In only one case was such permission refused. In all such work the greatest care was taken to copy the papers verbatim, and in the case of very rare papers photographic copies were obtained. Many of the rolls give not only the name, but the age, birth-place, residence and general description of the soldiers enlisting.
