Its earliest lesson was in the field of service. It developed into an Academy and College during the years when the Colonies were beginning to feel the free and inspiring influences of a young, Vigorous, and growing civilization, so that when resistance to the parent country became the dominant thought of the colonists, its graduates were in the fore front of the movement. They were heard in the protesting town meetings, and when recourse to arms was had, they were again present and were participants, not only in the struggles on the field, but also in the halls of legislation. The part they bore in the establishment of independence and in the upbuilding of the Republic will never be forgotten. It was a lesson in loyalty. This lesson, so notable, became a subject of common remark. Like the first lesson, it has come down through many decades, and, with that first lesson, con stitutes a part Of that intangible thing known as the Pennsylvania spirit. In our earliest documents, we can discern plainly, as dis tinguishing characteristics of the University, service, and loyalty, with which are linked scholarship and character.
