Book excerpt: "Caught between the Theatricality of the Baroque and the acute sensibility of Romanticism, art in Rome in the eighteenth century has long been a neglected area of study." "The grand scale and spectacular diversity of the period are comprehensively captured for the first time in this definitive history of the period, produced to accompany a major U.S. exhibition organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and documenting the work of over 150 artists. With over 450 illustrations, and texts by an outstanding array of experts from around the world, Art in Rome in the Eighteenth Century provides a massively authoritative survey of a fascinating era."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Ever since President Ronald Reagan's speech on ballistic missile defense (BMD) in March 1983, the military use of space has become a hotly debated topic. President Reagan did not mention space, only a plan to place renewed emphasis on the development of a BMD technology. Nevertheless, the speech was promptly dubbed "Star Wars" because the space environment seems to be the most likely place to deploy a ballistic missile defense system, and several administration officials mentioned space-based BMD systems as technological possibilities. Although Americans are accustomed to public debate concerning the merits of proposed weapon systems, the Star Wars controversy covers issues broader. Will space-based weapon systems allow a new strategy to replace assured destruction? Are we prepared to militarize space, an environment that has been treated as a war-free sanctuary since the Eisenhower administration? Are space-based weapons that have been proposed for BMD purposes technologically feasible? This paper provides exceptional insights into the various doctrines that do or would govern military affairs in the space environment. Its strengths are the author's ability to articulate the various doctrines, the historical perspective from which these doctrines are examined, and the broad context from which these doctrines are viewed. The prescription for the space power doctrine presented in this paper is not radically different from the path the United States has already taken. It calls for a complete space transportation system to augment the space shuttle, a system which includes space stations and a family of high- and low-thrust upper stages that will help maintain this nation's technological control of the environment. While this space transportation system will support both civilian and military users, we should develop a separate and primarily military vehicle, the aerospace plane, as soon as possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lars Ahlfors's Lectures on Quasiconformal Mappings, based on a course he gave at Harvard University in the spring term of 1964, was first published in 1966 and was soon recognized as the classic it was shortly destined to become. These lectures develop the theory of quasiconformal mappings from scratch, give a self-contained treatment of the Beltrami equation, and cover the basic properties of Teichmuller spaces, including the Bers embedding and the Teichmuller curve. It is remarkable how Ahlfors goes straight to the heart of the matter, presenting major results with a minimum set of prerequisites. Many graduate students and other mathematicians have learned the foundations of the theories of quasiconformal mappings and Teichmuller spaces from these lecture notes. This edition includes three new chapters. The first, written by Earle and Kra, describes further developments in the theory of Teichmuller spaces and provides many references to the vast literature on Teichmuller spaces and quasiconformal mappings. The second, by Shishikura, describes how quasiconformal mappings have revitalized the subject of complex dynamics. The third, by Hubbard, illustrates the role of these mappings in Thurston's theory of hyperbolic structures on 3-manifolds. Together, these three new chapters exhibit the continuing vitality and importance of the theory of quasiconformal mappings.

Book excerpt: Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) was the presiding genius of the Italian Baroque. As a sculptor, he produced a host of exhilarating works -- the Ecstasy of St. Teresa, David, Apollo and Daphne, The Rape of Proserpina, among others -- that seem to breathe with life. As an architect, he created the interior of St. Peter's in Vatican City as we know it today -- the ornate shrines and monuments under the dome, the papal tombs, and encircling colonnades of the Piazza San Pietro itself -- as well as churches and numerous fountains throughout Rome.Drawing on much previously unpublished research, art historian Charles Avery rescues Bernini from critical neglect and offers a thoroughgoing reevaluation of this great artist's multifaceted career. Throughout, 400 illustrations, including eighty magnificent color plates, capture the richness of Bernini's work as never before -- and reveal many extraordinary details that are difficult to see even on the originals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only scholarly work in the English language on the city of Rome in the Age of the Enlightenment, and the only book in any language to treat this fascinating city in all its multifarious aspects. Professor Gross combines extensive archival research with the latest findings of other scholars to produce a uniquely rounded portrait of the papal capital, elegantly illustrated with contemporary engravings by Piranesi and others. The book is divided into two sections, in the first of which Professor Gross discusses the material and institutional structures of the city, including its demography, economy, food supply, and judicial systems. The second section considers aspects of intellectual, cultural, and artistic life. Professor Gross contends not only that ancien-regime Rome witnessed a decline in Counter-Reformation fervour, but that this decay resulted in a marked dissonance in the political, social, and cultural life of the city.

Book excerpt: "The twentieth century was marked by the fall of all specific artistic disciplines. Painting and sculpture began to intertwine with other artistic languages - architecture and photography, cinema and design - through the unbridled use of all techniques and all media. Vertigo: A Century of Multimedia Art, from Futurism to the Web aims to document multimedia overlays created through the use of new technologies - radio and television, the telephone and gramophone, film and the computer - that have marked the artistic practices of the historic and contemporary avant-gardes, from futurism to constructivism, dada to surrealism, pop art to conceptual art. It features a long line-up of images and thoughts, books and manifestos, films and photographs, discs and videos produced by the major protagonist of art - both yesterday and today, from Balla to Marinetti, Schwitters to Duchamp, Warhol to Beuys, Nauman to Kiefer and Paik to Anderson - for an aesthetic view completely free of all spatial, temporal and media-based confines." --Book Jacket.
