Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peeps at Heraldry The art of heraldry, or armoury, as the Old writers called it, consists in blazoning the arms and telling the descent and history of families by certain pictorial signs. Thus from age to age an authenticated register of genealogies has been kept and handed on from gener ation to generation. The making and keeping of these records have always been the special duty of a duly appointed herald. Perhaps you think that explanation of heraldry sounds rather dull, but you will soon find out that very much that is interesting and amusing, too, is associated with the study of armorial bearings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Heraldic Book-Stamps: Figured and Described The large majority of the stamps illustrated herewith are' in the British Museum, but I have included a few in private ownership, and to these owners my sincere thanks are due for their kindness in allowing me to copy the various coats. I have in every case mentioned this private ownership, and where such mention is not found the book from which the drawing has been made is in the British Museum, either in the Department of Printed Books or in the Department of Manuscripts. Heraldry is of military origin, but its decorative side, and the various exact rules which govern it, were probably brought into use during the Middle Ages, in connection with the frequent Tournaments which were governed by strict rules. The ceremonies to be followed at the Tournaments were very closely laid down heralds as well as their assistants of all sorts came into much prominence, and personal insignia acquired an importance they have never had since. Even now there are a few signs of ancient personal heraldry existing in our army; crests and tartans of private families may be found among the Highland regiments, but the modern tendency, especially since the late war in South Africa, has been to abolish such peculiarities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leopards of England and Other Papers on Heraldry The first article in this collection is offered rather for the instruction of ordinary folk who wish to know something about the history of the royal arms than for the consideration of advanced students of armory. It is not claimed for it that it contains anything, that is new, or indeed anything that cannot be gleaned with a little trouble from printed books and a study of armorial seals. It is hoped, however, that it may be found to set forth the reasons of the changes that have been made from time to time in the arms of the sovereigns of England at somewhat greater detail than in some of the handbooks on heraldry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heraldry of Fish: Notices of the Principal Families, Bearing Fish in Their Arms The present attempt was suggested by the author's de sire to compress the opinions advanced into a reasonable compass, and bring within a single volume the various illustrations requiredfi'e Great facility has been afforded for its prosecution by the liberality of the publisher, and by the additional satisfaction of having all the drawings With which the work is embellished, made upon the wood under the author's own inspection, by his daugh ter, Sophia Barbara Moule, an advantage which will be best appreciated by those who know the great difficulty of obtaining heraldic drawings correctly executed, in which the beauty, in a great measure, depends on the character of the different periods of art. In the limited view of heraldry here taken, calculated rather to excite than gratify curiosity, it has not been considered merely with reference to the contents of the shield, or the simple coats of arms, as found on the ban ners of the Paladins of europeql The custom of mar shalling, in which the arms are blended by family alli ances, has been the means of affording some illustrations. The modes of representing heraldry on the baronial and municipal seals, exhibiting no want of invention, and differing from the arrangement on the ancient standards.
