Book excerpt: In 1839 Louis Jacques Mande unveiled the daguerreotype upon the world and it became possible to produce erotic images of real women taken in real time. After its first stumbling technical steps, this new medium of photography opened up unforeseen worlds, including the world of glamour and eroticism, to a mass market. Peep Show Pinups celebrates the history of erotic, sexually-charged photographs of women, pioneered in France but spreading through Europe and across to North America, from the 1840s until the 1930s. It offers sketches of the studios, the photographers, the models, and captures the costumes, sets, and props. This book follows the technological evolution in the medium from the fragile daguerreotype to the first printed cabinet cards and the mass market saucy postcards. It explains the experiments that allowed the introduction of color and the illusion of three dimensions and movement into the medium, and the shifting balance between the demands of the market and the strictures of the law. Above all, this book offers delightful photographs of women from past eras and creates a timeline of sensuality and eroticism. The authors acknowledge and delve into the issues of commercial, racial, and sexual exploitation that were present from those earliest days of erotic photography until today, but Peep Show Pinups is also a celebration of sensuality, fun, style, and joie de vivre in what may be regarded as its golden era.

Book excerpt: This lovely gift book--available in three striking cover options that will be shipped to customers at random--will beguile a new generation with flirtatious representations of femininity from the 1940s and 50s. Illustrations of irresistible pinup models bring teasing frivolity to a range of everyday situations, organized thematically from morning to evening. From sun-kissed beauties at the beach to ski bunnies hitting the slopes, bedside nurses ready to take your temperature to scantily clad runaways, rakish shipmates to not-so-conscientious secretaries, these smiling cuties are ready for fun. Representations of women who embrace their sexuality--flirtatious but never vulgar--have been around since the late nineteenth century, but the pin-up genre skyrocketed into popularity during World War II. The penny arcade trading cards originally viewed on a peep-show style reel and reproduced here as detachable illustrations feature both established pin-up artists and those waiting to be rediscovered. Each illustration is accompanied by a humorous and memorable celebrity quote.

Book excerpt: Humans have always depicted erotica - among the oldest surviving examples are Paleolithic cave paintings and carvings. The ancient Greeks did it; the Romans did it; on the opposite side of the Atlantic the Moche of Peru did it. Before the middle of the nineteenth century these images generally consisted of paintings and drawings. But Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre changed all of that by inventing the first practical process of photography.Daguerreotypes did not fade with time and as with so many advances in image capture¿polaroids, cine film, video and digital cameras¿artists quickly used the new technology to depict the undraped feminine form. The French pioneered erotic photography, producing nude postcards¿although the cards were never sent by post, it was illegal. Nudes were also marketed in magazines. And so the pinup was created. The ¿pin up¿images could be cut out of magazines or newspapers, or be from postcards. Such photos often appear on calendars, which are meant to be pinned up anyway. Later, posters of ¿pin-up girls¿ were massproduced. Peep Show Pinups: The Golden Age looks at the wealth of images that have survived from the end of the nineteenth and the start of the twentieth centuries.

Book excerpt: A treasure trove of pin-up girl images from photographer Bunny Yeager, celebrated for her playfully erotic photos of Bettie Page that continue to influence photography and fashion today. The only woman pin-up photographer of her day, Bunny Yeager was also a model in her own right. After winning several beauty pageants in Miami, Yeager went to photography school, and in 1955, she hit the jackpot with her shot of Bettie Page scantily clad in a Santa hat, which sold instantly to the fledgling Playboy magazine. The beginning of a long collaboration, her photographs of Bettie have now been featured on more magazine covers than those of Marilyn Monroe. This glamorous volume gathers more than a hundred lens-fogging photographs embodying the naughty girl-next-door eroticism of pin-up culture. Culled from Yeager’s extensive archive, the collection includes her most iconic shots of the legendary Bettie as well as many previously unpublished images. Yeager’s pioneering self-portraits and excerpts from her charming 1960s how-to manuals are featured alongside dozens of wholesome beauties shot in the studio and on location. A fun and sexy book, it is sure to tap into the current burlesque trend and the popularity of glamour photography and vintage American culture.

Book excerpt: “Scrupulously researched . . . An eloquent fan, Foster brings insight into Page’s recent revival as a sex symbol.” —Entertainment Weekly TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY EDITION UPDATED BY THE AUTHOR WITH A NEW EPILOGUE She has been called the most photographed model in history. From her modest beginnings in Nashville to her legacy as a cult figure, here is the true story of America’s iconic pinup queen, legendary Playboy centerfold Bettie Page—including her stormy marriages, her trial for attempted murder, and her decade-long isolation in a California mental institution. During the 1950s, Bettie set hearts ablaze with her killer curves and girl-next-door smile. Yet at the height of her popularity, with a promising acting career before her, she walked away. For more than thirty years, Bettie stayed hidden from the public eye, though she lived on in her fans’ memories, much like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. Journalist Richard Foster became the first reporter to contact Page during her long absence, and the first to tell her full story. Using interviews with those who knew her, and filled with uncommon knowledge and insights, The Real Bettie Page reveals both the fun flirt and fashion-forward counter-culture icon whose style continues to inspire today, as well as the intriguing and complex, flesh-and-blood woman behind her smiling photos. Includes classic and rare color and black-and-white photos

Book excerpt: When the documentary Bettie Page Reveals All was released in 2013, it would have been easy to assume we would never again hear directly from the adored icon. After all, the film is narrated by Bettie Mae Page herself, and she spills on lots of subjects that she had previously kept private–even in her authorized biography–though she does maintain her own decades-long, no-photos rule in the movie. She loathed the effects of aging, said it made her sad to see her own celebrity idols when they were older, and wanted people to remember her as she looked in her pinup days. Fortunately for the hordes of Bettie fans worldwide, a bounty of unreleased Bettie material awaits. For years–since before Bettie’s death from heart failure in December 2008 at the age of 85–boxes and file folders of Bettie mementoes have been gathering dust in the closets of Bettie’s nephew’s house. Ron Brem, a musician living in Bakersfield, California, is the only child of Bettie’s beloved sister, Goldie Jane Page. Bettie never had kids, other than three stepchildren during one of her four marriages to three men (she married one twice). Goldie was also an aspiring model and actress but later settled into housewifery before eventually becoming an art teacher and gallery owner. She died during the summer of 2004, but in the several years before her death, she had carefully stored heaps of incredible family photos, the bulk of which feature Bettie as either the sole subject or part of the shot. None of these hundreds of photos has ever been published until now, and few people even know they exist. Goldie also saved approximately 29 letters from Bettie spanning the years 1949 to 2000, ranging in length from note-size to 18 full pages, which tell the unknown story of Bettie’s “lost years” following her retirement from modeling in 1957.

Book excerpt: Crap. We all have it. Filling drawers. Overflowing bins and baskets. Proudly displayed or stuffed in boxes in basements and garages. Big and small. Metal, fabric, and a whole lot of plastic. So much crap. Abundant cheap stuff is about as American as it gets. And it turns out these seemingly unimportant consumer goods offer unique insights into ourselves—our values and our desires. In Crap: A History of Cheap Stuff in America, Wendy A. Woloson takes seriously the history of objects that are often cynically-made and easy to dismiss: things not made to last; things we don't really need; things we often don't even really want. Woloson does not mock these ordinary, everyday possessions but seeks to understand them as a way to understand aspects of ourselves, socially, culturally, and economically: Why do we—as individuals and as a culture—possess these things? Where do they come from? Why do we want them? And what is the true cost of owning them? Woloson tells the history of crap from the late eighteenth century up through today, exploring its many categories: gadgets, knickknacks, novelty goods, mass-produced collectibles, giftware, variety store merchandise. As Woloson shows, not all crap is crappy in the same way—bric-a-brac is crappy in a different way from, say, advertising giveaways, which are differently crappy from commemorative plates. Taking on the full brilliant and depressing array of crappy material goods, the book explores the overlooked corners of the American market and mindset, revealing the complexity of our relationship with commodity culture over time. By studying crap rather than finely made material objects, Woloson shows us a new way to truly understand ourselves, our national character, and our collective psyche. For all its problems, and despite its disposability, our crap is us.
