Book excerpt: Once consigned almost exclusively to Saturday morning fare for young viewers, television animation has evolved over the last several decades as a programming form to be reckoned with. While many animated shows continue to entertain tots, the form also reaches a much wider audience, engaging viewers of all ages. Whether aimed at toddlers, teens, or adults, animated shows reflect an evolving expression of sophisticated wit, adult humor, and a variety of artistic techniques and styles. The Encyclopedia of American Animated Television Series encompasses animated programs broadcast in the United States and Canada since 1948. From early cartoon series like Crusader Rabbit, Rocky and His Friends, and The Flintstones to 21st century stalwarts like The Simpsons, South Park, and Spongebob Squarepants, the wide range of shows can be found in this volume. Series from many networks—such as Comedy Central, the Disney Channel, Nickleodeon, and Cartoon Network— are included, representing both the diversity of programming and the broad spectrum of viewership. Each entry includes a list of cast and characters, credit information, a brief synopsis of the series, and a critical analysis. Additional details include network information and broadcast history. The volume also features one hundred images and an introduction containing an historical overview of animated programming since the inception of television. Highlighting an extensive array of shows from Animaniacs and Archer to The X-Men and Yogi Bear, The Encyclopedia of American Animated Television Series is an essential resource for anyone interested in the history and evolution of this constantly expanding art form.

There are many books designed to help librarians and teachers come up with programming ideas, but here is one that compiles, organizes, and indexes texts and tunes thoroughly. This unparalleled collection, a follow up to the author's popular Big Book of Animal Rhymes, Fingerplays, and Songs, is organized around the four seasons, focusing on children's rhymes, fingerplays, songs, and poems relating to weather, time, and holidays. Designed as a one-stop resource to help librarians and educators find material for their programs quickly and easily, the book features approximately 300 songs, rhymes, and fingerplays, including some Spanish-language versions. Material is topically arranged and presented in a format that can easily be reproduced. There is a thematic index and generous cross-referencing, as well as age/grade levels that will help readers determine which material is best suited to a particular audience. Music for accompaniments is included, as are directions for performing the fingerplays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mass media are diversified media technologies that are intended to reach a large audience by mass communication. The technologies through which this communication takes place vary. In the late 20th Century, mass media could be classified into eight mass media industries: books, newspapers, magazines, recordings, radio, movies, television and the internet. With the explosion of digital communication technology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the question of what forms of media should be classified as “mass media” has become more prominent. Each mass media has its own content types, its own creative artists and technicians, and its own business models. For example, the Internet includes websites, blogs, podcasts, and various other technologies built on top of the general distribution network. The sixth and seventh media, internet and mobile, are often called collectively as digital media; and the fourth and fifth, radio and TV, as broadcast media. Some argue that video games have developed into a distinct mass form of media. Mass communication was seen by those who owned newspapers, radio and T.V. stations and by cinema producers mostly as an efficient device to reach messages to a very large number of people in a linear fashion. The media users were seen primarily as targets-passive targets for message intake and appropriate action either in voting as desired or buying products advertised or imbibing ideas intended by producers. Magic bullet theory suggests that messages were shot directly into the receiver. It assumes that receivers ate passive and defenseless and take whatever is shot at them. The magic bullet theory also portrays that the media have a direct immediate and powerful effect on those who pay attention to their contents. This book has been intended as a manual for students of this subject. Contents: • Television: The People (Crew) • Television: Past Present and Future • News Paper Organization and Management • Printed Media Industry: Theory and Practice • Media Organizations • Film in India • Participatory Journalism and Weblogs • Weblogs and Journalism

Book excerpt: "It's a hot August Saturday on Nantucket Island. Over the course of the next twenty-four hours, two lives will be transformed forever. Marguerite Beale, former chef of culinary hot spot Les Parapluies, has been out of the public eye for over a decade. This all changes with a phone call from Marguerite's goddaughter, Renata Knox. Marguerite has not seen Renata since the death of Renata's mother, Candace Harris Knox, fourteen years earlier. And now that Renata is on Nantucket visiting the family of her new fiancé, she takes the opportunity, against her father's wishes, to contact Marguerite in hopes of learning the story of her mother's life -- and death. But the events of the day spiral hopelessly out of control for both women, and nothing ends up as planned."--Page 4 of cover.
