Download or read book Pedro Sanchez written by D. Jose M. de Pereda and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pedro Sanchez: With Introduction, Notes, and Vocabulary That this ignorance is general among us can scarcely be questioned. It is the source of a dangerous attitude of super ciliousness, quite unwarranted, toward the descendants of the Conquistadores who with Titanic energy dominated the Old World and colonized the N ew, laying here the foundation of linguistic empire unparalleled in its territorial vastness and eco nomic promise. For even a short-term student of Spanish to pass out with such ignorance uncorrected or merely replaced by shadowy grotesque conceptions hardly better - demonstrates a singularly unfortunate ratio of parts in the composition of his training in the subject. International jealousy and race antag onism spring, like personal ones, primarily from the distrust born of common ignorance. Some acquaintance with a foreign nation's history is indispensable for clearing the mind of the miasmatic fog generated in a vacuum of ideas; and the book which, like Pedro Sa'mlzez, contributes its share toward this bracing result deserves well of our consideration as a civilizing agency. It makes the subject matter appeal all the more strongly to our sympathies by setting before us another ex ample of how nations, like individuals, reap as they sow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hope-filled expository guide to an epistle written to Christians in a society like ours. A must-read for Christians under cultural pressure. The book of 1 Peter could have been written for our times-a time of antagonism toward biblical ethics, and the marginalization of biblical Christians. Into that culture-our culture-Peter speaks of hope and offers joy as he points believers home to heaven. Juan Sanchez brings his experience of ministry in the US and Latin America, and his pastoral wisdom and insight, to this wonderful epistle-an epistle that every Christian needs to treasure today.

Book Synopsis Recollections of the Life of the Priest Don Antonio José Martínez by : Pedro Sánchez
Download or read book Recollections of the Life of the Priest Don Antonio José Martínez written by Pedro Sánchez and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1903 Pedro Sanchez published his "Memorias, or Recollections of the Life of the Priest Don Antonio Jose Martinez." This rare book, written in Spanish, is hailed by historians and others as an important and unique contribution to the literary history of New Mexico and the American Southwest. Sanchez was a student of this famous folk hero priest and the book beautifully illustrates the respect and admiration the people held for Padre Martinez. The priest is shown as dedicated to the Church and the people who looked up to him as a champion of social justice, equal rights, the downtrodden and the oppressed. Pedro Sanchez himself, as a product of Padre Martinez's coeducational school in Taos, New Mexico, credits his mentor for his success in his career and life as did many of his other students. This Spanish and English edition features an introduction by Myra Ellen Jenkins, Ph.D., a former New Mexico state historian. Ray John de Aragón, a leading scholar on Padre Martinez and the authority on his life and work, translated the original Spanish text of the Sanchez book into English. De Aragón has a Masters in American Studies and has been a keynote speaker at public and historical conferences on Padre Martinez whom he has researched extensively. He is the recipient of numerous awards and is the author of "Padre Martinez and Bishop Lamy," "The Legend of La Llorona," and "Brothers of the Light, The Penitentes of New Mexico," all from Sunstone Press.

Book Synopsis Mad for God by : Sara Tilghman Nalle
Download or read book Mad for God written by Sara Tilghman Nalle and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convinced he was the Elijah Messiah, the Spanish peasant Bartolomé Sánchez believed that God had sent him in divine retribution for the crimes committed by the Inquisition and the Church. Sánchez's vocal and intolerable religious deviance quickly landed him in the very court he believed he was sent to destroy. Fortunately for him, the first inquisitor assigned to his case came to believe that Sánchez was not guilty by virtue of insanity, and tried to collect the proof that would save his life. For seven years, Sánchez shuttled between jails, hospitals, and his home village while his fate hung in the balance. Nalle convincingly evokes the compassion of Sánchez's first inquisitor, Pedro Cortes, as he struggled to save his prisoner's life, and argues that the Spanish, compared to other Europeans of the day, were remarkably rational and humane when dealing with the mentally ill. A gripping tale of madness and religious conviction, Mad for God offers new historical insight into the ongoing debate over the nature of religious inspiration, insanity, and criminal responsibility.
