Resultan interesantes además las alusiones a las fuentes financieras de la expedición y a sus expectativas políticas. En 1539, tras obtener de Francisco Pizarro el título de teniente gobernador de Chile, Valdivia inició los preparativos de su expedición. Partió de Cuzco a mediados de enero de 1540. Así se iniciaba su vida como aventurero. La primera carta de Pedro de Valdivia al emperador Carlos V, por ejemplo, es una de las seis Cartas de relación que Pedro de Valdivia escribió al monarca. En ella relata su viaje a Chile y la conquista de esa tierra. Esta primera carta fue fechada el 20 de agosto de 1545, el último invierno del hemisferio sur. Se diferencia de otras cartas enviadas por los conquistadores a Carlos V. Pone énfasis en las dificultades de la conquista, llamadas trabajos, literalmente obras en la carta. Según algunos historiadores, en un acto de justicia por las mutilaciones y masacre a los indígenas que ordenó Valdivia, los mapuches le dieron muerte. Durante tres días sufrió torturas atroces. Hubo, incluso, cercenamientos similares a las realizados por Valdivia para escarmentar a los indios en aquella contienda. El martirio continuó con la amputación de sus músculos en vida, usando afiladas conchas de almeja, y comiéndolos ligeramente asados delante de sus ojos. Finalmente extrajeron a carne viva su corazón para devorarlo entre los victoriosos líderes militares mapuches, mientras bebían chicha en su cráneo, que conservaron como trofeo.
