Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peculiarities of American Cities A residence in more than a hundred cities, including nearly all that are introduced in this work, leads me to feel that I shall succeed in my purpose of giving to the public a book, without the necessity of marching in slow and solemn procession before my readers a monumental array of time-honored statistics; on the contrary, it will be my aim, in the following pages, to talk of cities as I have seen and found them in my walks, from day to day, with but slight reference to their origin and past history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Cities in America: Their Problems and Their Government Three years ago the author undertook to prepare a contribution on "The Government of Great American Cities" to be published in Germany in a series of articles and monographs devoted to a description of city government in several leading countries of the Western World. This series appeared in the Schriften des Vereins fur Socialpolitik under the general title, "Verfassung und Verwaltungsorganization der St dte." Although the author's contribution was published in English, both the form and the substance of the monograph rendered it practically unsuited for general use in America. Accordingly, the work has been thoroughly revised and prepared for publication here as a separate volume in The Citizen's Library. It is a matter of regret that the limitations of space have compelled the author, in this revised work, to confine the discussion to six cities only, - Washington, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Boston. If the method of treatment here adopted should prove acceptable to the public, it may be that at some future time the story will be extended to include Cleveland, Los Angeles, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Denver, Milwaukee, and other cities of the second class in which history is now being made. The present volume is offered to the public with considerable diffidence, for two reasons. In the first place, the method of treatment is experimental. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Cities: Their Methods of Business The great problem of city promotion is just this new need to make the city an efficient partner with its busi ness rather than an undirected force acting on that business. That problem is to make use of the city with its multitude of possibilities in what H. G. Wells calls the every day drama of human getting. But business success, of course, is no more the whole field of city promotion than the individual income is the whole problem of the individual. Every science and art has a relation to city development. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Of this oneness in method and mutuality Of pur pose some may be legitimate and may lead to efficiency. Much Of it, however, is short-sighted, non-dividend producing and anti social. Not a little of it is clearly against existing statutes. In all this planning the security floater is in supreme authority. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Destiny of the American City A portion of this manuscript was written several years ago, during a period of inflamed public opinion and social unrest, fraught with many misgivings and uncertainties. The period in question, was one most prolific in various and numerous remedies offered for the purpose of stimulating the building industry, each one a guaranteed specific for every economic ill. The object in offering it, at this time, is more for the purpose of giving some idea of the psychology of a period, filled with many economic problems, that had to be solved under conditions, new, varied and untried. The position taken at that time was far from being the most popular one, for the reason it offered very little encouragement for the builder to build, until some of the abuses with which the building industry was surrounded, were corrected.
