Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the age of European expansion, pearls became potent symbols of imperial supremacy. Pearls for the Crown demonstrates how European art legitimated racialized hierarchies and inequitable notions about humanity and nature that still hold sway today. When Christopher Columbus encountered pristine pearl beds in southern Caribbean waters in 1498, he procured the first source of New World wealth for the Spanish Crown, but he also established an alternative path to an industry that had remained outside European control for centuries. Centering her study on a selection of key artworks tied to the pearl industry, Mónica Domínguez Torres examines the interplay of materiality, labor, race, and power that drove artistic production in the early modern period. Spanish colonizers exploited the expertise and forced labor of Native American and African workers to establish pearling centers along the coasts of South and Central America, disrupting the environmental and demographic dynamics of their overseas territories. Drawing from postcolonial theory, material culture studies, and ecocriticism, Domínguez Torres demonstrates how, through use of the pearl, European courtly art articulated ideas about imperial expansion, European superiority, and control over nature, all of which played key roles in the political circles surrounding the Spanish Crown. This highly anticipated interdisciplinary study will be welcomed by scholars of art history, the history of colonial Latin America, and ecocriticism in the context of the Spanish colonies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex worker rescue and rehabilitation programs have become a core focus of the global movement to combat human trafficking. Manufacturing Freedom offers an ethnographic exploration of two American anti-trafficking organizations that offer vocational training in jewelry production to women migrants in China and Thailand as a path out of sex work. Activists brand this jewelry a "slave-free good" and then sell it to consumers in the United States, generating racialized circuits of commerce and morality centered around promises of freedom from enslavement and redemptive wages for former sex workers--whom these organizations universally label as victims of trafficking. Workers, by contrast, often contest the trafficking label and object to the moral and disciplinary processes that ensnare them in a pernicious global web of anti-trafficking rescue. In this novel study, Elena Shih argues that these anti-trafficking rescue and rehabilitation projects profit off persistent labor abuse of women workers and imagined but savvily marketed narratives of redemption, thereby propagating a transnational moral economy of low-wage women's work that obfuscates relations of race, gender, national power, and inequality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal transformation, liberation, and fulfillment can be discovered by anyone, anywhere, anytime, in the message and modeling of Jesus, not by denying or changing creed, race, gender, sexual orientation, or culture, but by freely manifesting the fullness of psychological and spiritual fulfillment. Jesus taught and modeled a universal, inclusive spirituality. This book illustrates that Jesus simultaneously taught and modeled the highest form of behavioral psychology applying to everyone, everywhere. The focus herein is a reexamination and reintroduction of the life and lessons of Jesus of Nazareth from a behavioral and inclusively spiritual point of view across creeds and cultures beyond religion. Those who study and practice the spiritual tenets of diverse religions and nonaffiliated spiritual pathways apart from Christianity will recognize shared experience, belief, and practice in the behavioral and spiritual lessons taught and modeled by Jesus. Therefore, this book is written for all people, religious and secular, inclusive of creed, race, gender, sexual orientation, and culture, who believe in an infinite, permeating principle that births and joins all of Creation, that is known by any name, form, or substance (God, Goddess, Father, Mother, Yahweh, Allah, Great Spirit, Grandmother, Grandfather, Creator, Maker, One, New Physics, et al.) from which all Creation springs, from which Creation cannot be separated, and through which we become the most transcendent and liberated of our human selves.

Book excerpt: In a sweeping analysis of religion in the post-Civil War and twentieth-century South, Freedom's Coming puts race and culture at the center, describing southern Protestant cultures as both priestly and prophetic: as southern formal theology sanctified dominant political and social hierarchies, evangelical belief and practice subtly undermined them. The seeds of subversion, Paul Harvey argues, were embedded in the passionate individualism, exuberant expressive forms, and profound faith of believers in the region. Harvey explains how black and white religious folk within and outside of mainstream religious groups formed a southern "evangelical counterculture" of Christian interracialism that challenged the theologically grounded racism pervasive among white southerners and ultimately helped to end Jim Crow in the South. Moving from the folk theology of segregation to the women who organized the Montgomery bus boycott, from the hymn-inspired freedom songs of the 1960s to the influence of black Pentecostal preachers on Elvis Presley, Harvey deploys cultural history in fresh and innovative ways and fills a decades-old need for a comprehensive history of Protestant religion and its relationship to the central question of race in the South for the postbellum and twentieth-century period.

Book excerpt: What if what you know about God just ain't so? Portals can be rather inconspicuous and elusive, but when we find one of these obscure openings, we discover that it can be a divine door that ushers us out of darkness and despair into a whole new dimension of freedom. Unfortunately, because of negative encounters we may have had with churchy people or the guilt and condemnation we may have suffered under religious teaching, we end up being driven away, and rightly so, from any further involvement with religion. A portal (for the purpose of this book) symbolizes a gateway of knowledge and understanding into God’s grace and truth intended to bring to light the gospel of Jesus Christ to lead us out from behind the iron bars of false beliefs that may be enslaving us. This book was written to display God’s prismatic promises and the biblical wisdom God has provided for us as answers and antidotes to the various problems we may encounter in life.

Book excerpt: Through the eyes of a suburban wife and mother whose pursuit of happiness is overshadowed by personal turmoil, The Price of Pearls follows a womans quest for esteem, identity, belonging, love, and personal acceptance. This memoir eloquently details the two-fold process of discovering true inner healing: embracing memories and unveiling secrets, especially those we are keeping from ourselves. Following her dynamic, change-filled 1950s childhood through eventful college years in the 1970s and into an adulthood plagued with discontent, author Patricia Mannss ultimate search for serenity shows us that learning to accept things we cannot change is more than just a prayer for today or a hope for tomorrow. It is a lens through which we must view our past.
