Book Synopsis Awakening to the Power of Peace—Love—Joy—Gratitude by : Jean Maalouf
Download or read book Awakening to the Power of Peace—Love—Joy—Gratitude written by Jean Maalouf and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humankind is, at the present time, reaching a critical point in history. A disaster of apocalyptic proportions could erupt at any time. “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought,” predicted Albert Einstein, “but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” What we are to do in order to prevent such catastrophic events? We are to change the way we think, insists philosopher Maalouf. We are to see people and things in different ways. We are to see with God’s eyes. We are to witness the birth of a new consciousness. For philosopher Jean Maalouf, who holds two Ph.D.s and who has published more than forty books, one needs to go beyond the symptoms, he affirms, and find the root causes of our crises. His new book, Awakening to the Power of Peace – Love – Joy -- Gratitude, goes straight to the very core of our crises and points the way to their solutions. The truth is that the battlefield is not primarily on the land where people confront and kill each other. The true battlefield is where decisions are made--in the people’s minds, hearts, and souls. This is also where solutions should be found. Dr. Maalouf invites us to change the way we perceive reality so that a new way of living can emerge. If we don’t learn to love one another and to live together in peace, we will continue to kill each other, and we will perish together. We are interconnected. We are interdependent. What we think about, how we see things, and what we say and do and the way we live our life matter greatly. We-ly (all of us together), we should live in peace, love, joy, and gratitude.
Book Synopsis Love as a Guide to Morals by : Andrew Fitz-Gibbon
Download or read book Love as a Guide to Morals written by Andrew Fitz-Gibbon and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love as a Guide to Morals is an entry-level introduction to the ethical importance of love. Written in conversational format this book looks uniquely at the complexity of love in human relationships and how love can guide ethical decision-making. The book suggests that love in all its intricacy—erotic/erosic love, friendship, affection, and agapic love—is the great good of human life. The book argues that love has a unifying power for morality, and is more suited to ethical thinking and practice than any other idea. Love as a Guide to Morals uses a modified Aristotelian argument (after Alsdair MacIntyre) and suggests “loving relationships” rather than happiness as the goal of human life.
Download or read book Peace Love Yoga written by Andrea R. Jain and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging with the growing popular and academic interest in the "spiritual but not religious," Andrea R. Jain explores the connections between the practices of global spirituality and aspects of neoliberal capitalism in Peace Love Yoga. "Personal growth," "self-care," and "transformation" are all tropes in the narrative of the spiritual identity Jain is concerned with. This "spirituality" is usually depicted as firmly countercultural: the term "alternative" (alternative health, alternative medicine, alternative spiritualities) is omnipresent. To the contrary, Jain argues, spiritual commodities, entrepreneurs, and consumers are quite mainstream and sometimes even conservative and nationalistic. Ranging from the transnational to the economic to the activist, Jain refuses the single narrative focus of most works on the SBNR; human phenomena that can be analyzed through a single lens or narrative are few and far between, and existing research in this area too often yields a suspiciously tidy story. The heart of the book includes sophisticated analyses of: two politically divergent but equally entrepreneurial and global-capitalist yoga gurus; "athleisure apparel" corporations, such as lululemon, that successfully market consumer goods as a purchased commitment to social justice; and therapeutically-focused applications of spirituality that concentrate on healing the broken person rather than undermining the system that broke that person in the first place. Many spiritual commodities, corporations, and entrepreneurs, Jain suggests, do actually acknowledge the problems of neoliberal capitalism and in fact subvert them; but they subvert them through mere gestures. From provocative taglines printed across t-shirts or packaging to calls for "conscious capitalism," commodification serves as a strategy through which subversion itself is colonized.

Book Synopsis The Philosophy of the Yogasutra by : Karen O'Brien-Kop
Download or read book The Philosophy of the Yogasutra written by Karen O'Brien-Kop and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karen O'Brien-Kop's introduction to the Yogasutra highlights its status as a significant work of philosophy. Approaching the Yogasutra as living philosophy, this book elucidates philosophical conceptions of yoga, recognises the logical structure the sutras follow and explains the rules and principles that have sustained Patañjali's system of thought for centuries. Moving beyond standard interpretations of Patañjali's text and commentary as an aphoristic practice manual, O'Brien-Kop uses branches of philosophy to read the Yogasutra. Covering reality, self, ethics, language and knowledge, Patañjali's philosophies come to the fore. The book introduces his reasoned positions on dual and nondual metaphysics, the relationship between mind and body, the qualities of consciousness, the nature of freedom, and how to live ethically. Carefully-selected extracts from the primary text are translated for those unfamiliar with Sanskrit and commentaries run throughout. A glossary provides definitions of key concepts with useful translations. Accessible and up-to-date, this introduction broadens our understanding of Indian philosophical thought and explains why the Yogasutra deserves to be read alongside Parmenides' 'On Nature' and Plato's Phaedo as a classic of world philosophy.

Download or read book Peace Education written by James Page and published by IAP. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peace education is now well recognized within international legal instruments and within critical educational literature as an important aspect of education. Despite this, little attention has been given in the critical literature to the philosophical foundations for peace education and the rationale for peace education thus remains substantially an assumed one. This investigation explores some possible ethico-philosophical foundations for peace education, through an examination of five specific ethical traditions: 1) virtue ethics, whereby peace may be interpreted as a virtue, and/or virtue is interpreted as peacefulness, and peace education as education in that virtue; 2) consequentialist ethics, whereby peace education may be interpreted as education regarding the consequences of our action and inaction, both as individuals and collectivities; 3) conservative political ethics, whereby peace education may be interpreted as emphasizing the importance of the evolution of social institutions and the importance of ordered and lawful social change; 4) aesthetic ethics, whereby peace may be interpreted as something beautiful and valuable in itself, and peace education as emphasizing the importance of that beauty and value; and 5) the ethics of care, whereby care may be interpreted as a core element in peace, and peace education as encouraging trust and engagement with the other. The study addresses major contributions to each of these ethical traditions, the strengths and weaknesses of the tradition, and the ways in which the tradition provides support for peace education. It is argued in the thesis that each tradition provides only a partial basis for peace education, and that ultimately a holistic and integrative understanding is required, one that encourages a culture of peace. " ... an important addition to the emerging literature on peace education and the culture of peace" (From the Foreword by Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO).
