It is not the beginning of a process, but its end; not a root, but a fruit; not the creation of an imperial at, but the matured product of a moral or der. You cannot command peace, you can only grow it. If you would have the reaping there must be the sowing; for the reaping of peace there must be the planting of righteousness. That is the law of the sequence. Observe the right eons order then can be grown the lilies of peace. Now we begin to appreciate the successions of this great chapter. Thefirst bugle peal proclaims not the advent of peace, but the enthronement of right eousness. The herald withholds the word peace until righteousness is established. A king shall reign in righteousness and princes shall rule in judgment. That is the voice oi the first trumpet, and only when certain great redemptions have been wrought, certain perversities cor rected, certain authorities restored, cer tain pure and moral conditions recovered, is the second trumpet heard: And the work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever. That is the expres sion of the divine order as taught in the divine word. You cannot grow peace from unrighteousness, injustice, Oppres sion, cruelty, wrong. Peace does not spring from such roots. Do men gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles Not so. Righteousness and peace have kissed each other. That is the sweet and beautiful fellowship. Peace appears and offers her lovely face when wooed by rectitude and justice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is the aim of this little book to follow that order, and in some feeble measure to re ect that clearness. Hence the Scriptures are closely followed at every step of the argument, because they alone can guide our feet in the paths of peace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Peace My father has left a volume on Peace. Shortly before his death he corrected the final proofs. It is fitting so, for during his life he preached peace. In his 'Notes of Recent Exposition' in the Expository Times he wrote of the Copenhagen Conference, and quoted these words of Dr. Jowett: 'I was impressed with the grave necessity of demonstrating our will-to-peace as men demonstrated their will-to-war. ... Behind Governments and politicians, behind diplomatists and militarists, there is a great silent world of men and women yearning for peace. Delegates from every land spoke about it.... The people are not numb; they are only dumb. They do not lack heart, they are only in want of a voice. They cannot demonstrate their desires. They cannot speak so as to make Governments hear and heed. They need an organ of expression, and where can they find an organ except in the Church of the Living God? What is the Church for but to be a mouth for the dumb, an instrument to utter the silent yearnings of the purest and the best in every land?' But Dr. Hastings believed that a further duty is laid upon the Church. The people are not all seeking an 'organ of expression, ' for they are not all seeking peace. A fresh moral force to move them to the will-to-peace is needed. He hoped that preachers in all Churches would make Peace a message in the coming winter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of Reconciliation, or at-One-Ment One purpose of this Book is to set forth the Scriptural conception of the Cross of Christ as being, not an Atonement to God or Expiation of man's sin, but the means whereby God was effecting the At-one-ment, or Reconciliation, of the World with Himself. It is not written to support a one-sided "moral theory" of the Cross (although any true theory must be a moral one), but to state the Evangelical doctrine in its essential and abiding truth. An endeavour is made to show the real teaching of St. Paul and the truths underlying it, tested by the actual history and teaching of Christ. In Chapter VII. the doctrine of the Cross in its "judicial" aspect, or "the sin-bearing of Christ," is re-stated so as to show how Christ "bore our sins" and manifested the Divine Righteousness, in the way in which His Cross actually came to Him in the sequence of the Divine Moral Order, and apart from any arbitrary transfer, substitution, or suggestion of penal infliction on Christ. The Cross is also shown to be the Supreme manifestation of the Love of God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christmas and the War: A Sermon St. Paul in 2 Thessalonians, and St. John in the Revela tion, are prepared to see a tide of evil rising higher than ever before, and they do not falter at the vision God has His hand upon the world and guides it, and He knows when and how the power of evil can be met and finally crushed. The Parable of the Tares, from which my text comes, puts this lesson in a most vivid form. It describes for us, if we may say so, the look of the Kingdom of God in the world. Our Lord had come preaching the King dom, and He knew that many people expected that when the Kingdom came it would come with a great convulsion of nature and social life; the King would come and visibly destroy His enemies, banish all evil, and produce at a blow times of peace and righteousness. And 'the parable warns us against this expectation. The householder has sown good seed, of that there is no doubt but there is a watchful enemy near who is sure to sow tares if he can. So when the servants come and tell him that the tares have already begun to appear, he is sad but he is not surprised. He knows the work of the enemy, and he knows what the result - so harassing and perplexing to faith - will necessarily be. It is that his field over which he has taken so much pains will bring forth a mixed crop, like fields over which no such trouble has been taken. There will be wheat, no doubt, but there will also be tares; people will come and look and take note and say that after all it is very like other fields, that it is clear that you cannot keep tares out, however hard you try, and that, perhaps, as they seem part of the nature of things, they cannot be so mischievous after all. I beseech you, says Peter, as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul. Salva tion by abstinence belongs to the childhood period of the religious life. The burned child dreads the fire. This is the experience which springs from the instinct of fear. If sin hurts you, keep away from it. If you suli'er from a sinful habit, give up the habit. This is the method of reformation. If you are the subject of worry, cease your anxiety, and settle dovvn in a life of peace. If the serpent of sin bites you, keep away from its haunts. If you do not wish to die in a foreign land, stay at home. If you would be free from harmful knowledge, abstain from association with bad men and impure books. Abstain from sinful lusts. Let not unholy thoughts enter your mind or sensual desires dwell in your heart. Strike at the roots of sin which are down in the heart, keep the inner life free from everything unholy, and look well after the desires and thoughts which come trooping up to attack the citadel of the soul. But not only must you stop sinning. The lusts must be destroyed. Not only must the inner life be well looked after, the outer life also must not be neglected. Banish the sinful lusts and abstain from all appearance of evil. For sake the evil which is hidden from the eyes of men, as it lies deep in the soul, lay aside these forms of sin which are expressed in sinful actions, and also abstain from all kinds of acts which are not sinful, but seem so to men, as the appearance may lead weak souls astray. There are some classes of sin which wear the aspect of righteousness, and there are virtues which may be worn with the appearance of sin. As birds in building their nests are careful to avoid the use of bright-colored materials, which would help their enemies in locating them, so should the followers of Christ give no oppor tunity to their foes to attack them, nor injure their friends by engaging in any practices which may be harmless in themselves but may be made stepping-stones to a vicious life.
