Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the validation of models previously developed to normalize pavement friction measurements to standard environmental and operational conditions. In addition, recommendations are reported to improve the techniques and equipment for pavement friction measurement. Two models were examined for normalization of weather-related and seasonal variation of pavement friction. Their performance was found to be comparable, but the generalized prediction model is more readily applied than the mechanistic model, which requires knowledge of the percent normalized gradient of the pavements to be adjusted. The suggested procedure for normalization requires that three pavements of each class in a homogeneous climate be tested once per month during the testing season. The data then can be used to develop the coefficients in the models to adjust single measurements of all other pavements to standard conditions.

Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to pavement design, construction, management, and research engineers, highway safety officials, and others concerned with pavement friction characteristics. It describes the current state of the practice and discusses the methods used for evaluating wet pavement friction characteristics of new and restored pavements. This synthesis reviews models used for measuring and evaluating friction and texture, causes for friction changes over time, and aggregate and mix design to provide adequate friction. Also presented are construction and surface restoration practices for providing good pavement surface characteristics. In addition, considerations of noise and ride quality are discussed when compromise may be required.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, a rational overlay design method for flexible pavements in Arizona has been developed which includes roughness, fatigue and plastic deformation models. The method is incorporated in a microcomputer program which is also capable of analyzing the economics of other rehabilitation alternatives. During the development of the method, twenty in-service pavement sites were selected from Arizona highways covering various geographical and environmental regions, soil types, pavement conditions and traffic volumes. nondestructive tests (NDT) were performed on these sites using the Falling Weight Deflectometer at three stress levels as well as the Dynaflect. The pavement layers and subgrade moduli were backcalculated from NDT data using both static and dynamic analyses. The moduli of asphaltic layers were further adjusted for temperature. Statistical analysis was performed and the stress sensitivity was found to be small. Cone Penetration tests were further performed to verify the subgrade moduli. Asphalt concrete cores, base and subbase samples and undisturbed subgrade materials. In addition, base and subbase gradation as well as soil classification and Atterberg limits were obtained. The study expanded the data base for material properties in Arizona. This volume is the first in a three volume set. Volume II provides field testing procedure and workstation development and Volume III is a computer user guide.
