Book excerpt: This paper presents a methodology based on deflection basin parameters and artificial neural networks (ANNs) for processing dynamic falling weight deflectometer (FWD) measurements to estimate layer moduli and condition. Two-dimensional, dynamic, finite element analysis using the ABAQUS program was employed to develop the deflection information for this study. Unlike the majority of the existing backcalculation programs that iteratively adjust all the layer moduli to match the measured deflections, the proposed method first determines the subgrade modulus by means of two deflection basin parameters, Base Damage Index and Shape Factor F2, and then applies the estimated subgrade modulus and other parameters as input variables to a trained ANN to estimate the upper layers' moduli. Procedures in predicting layer moduli for both two- and three-layer pavement systems are presented. Field FWD measurements were analyzed both by this method and by the MODULUS program, the results of which assess the capability of the proposed method. Effects of discontinuities in the asphalt layer on the resulting FWD deflections were also studied using the finite element method. It was discovered that distresses in the asphalt layer may be detected using two deflection basin parameters, Shape Factor F2 and AREA.

Book excerpt: In this study a procedure has been developed to evaluate the structural condition of pavements using Road Rater deflection measurements. These procedures compare actual field deflections with deflections calculated by the Chevron N-Layer linear elastic computer program. The results obtained from these procedures are the layer moduli of the pavement materials. Procedures have been developed for asphaltic concrete pavements and composite pavements, including broken and non-broken concrete layers. This report also contains a comparison of structural overlay determined using the results of the new procedure, with overlays calculated using results from the 2-3 Projected procedure currently used by the Pavement Management branch of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. A users manual from the computer programs developed during this study is included in the appendix of the report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, there is no direct solution that provides the pavement in-situ layer moduli from deflection measurements. Current methods evaluate the pavement layer moduli from deflection measurements using either empirical approaches or layered elastic computer programs with iterative solutions. In this study mechanistically based typical curves are developed to evaluate the moduli of the pavement layers: surface, base, subbase, and subgrade from surface deflection measurements. The curves are developed using the Chevron N-layer computer program with a large number of typical combinations of layer thicknesses and material moduli. The load is assumed to be uniformly applied on a single circular plate with a 304.8-mm (12-in.) diameter, a typical condition of the falling weight deflectometer and the road rater with a single circular plate. Twenty-four sets of curves are developed representing a wide range of layer thicknesses and deflection basin shapes. Therefore, if the layer thicknesses are known and the surface deflection measurements are determined, the four moduli of the pavement layers can be evaluated. The developed curves are simple to use without the need for previous empirical relationships or computer analysis. The curves developed here are based on static analysis.

Book excerpt: This report documents the research performed on evaluation of pavement deflection equipment under Contract DTFH61-85-C-00115 for the Federal Highway Administration. The following devices were included in side-by-side field tests conducted in the Austin, Texas area during the week of August 11, 1986: the Benkelman Beam, C.E.B.T.P. Curviameter, Dynaflect, Dynatest Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), Kuab FWD, Phonix FWD, and the Road Rater. The report includes descriptions and comparisons of the devices through information obtained from a literature search, field tests and user survey conducted for this study. The side-by-side test program was performed over a broad range of pavement structures, including thick and thin flexible and rigid pavements, and composite pavements. The measured deflections were compared statistically. Mechanistic interpretations of the measured deflection basins were made and compared.

Book excerpt: The proceedings of June 1993 international symposium held in Atlanta, Georgia, called specifically to develop and standardized evaluation procedures for non-destructive methods of testing pavements. The 29 papers discuss analytical models and techniques, measurement and calculation techniques in the field and laboratory, problems and errors associated with backcalculation methods and design parameters, and testing for other pavement uses. Also includes a history of the quest for a standard and the status of that effort. Reproduced from typescripts. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

The test is intended to simulate the stress conditions that occur in the base and subgrade of a pavement system. Resilient modulus has been adopted by the U.S. federal highway administration as the primary performance parameter for pavement design. We thank those who prepared these papers, the reviewers who provided anonymous peer reviews, and those who participated in the symposium. We hope this STP encourages more work to improve the testing standard and the value of the Resilient Modulus test."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic test deflections have been duplicated by elastic theory using the Chevron N-layered computer program. Dynamic surface deflections obtained using the Road Rater have been used in conjunction with elastic theory to analyze pavement behavior. A procedure has been developed to use field measured Road Rater deflections to estimate the elastic moduli of the foundation material and to determine the equivalent thicknesses of new material which approximate the behavior of the structure. The estimated moduli and (or ) equivalent thicknesses may be used as inputs to design overlay thicknesses. An analysis of the deflection of the first three sensors of the Road rater also makes it possible to distinguish weaknesses in asphaltic concrete layers from weaknesses in the supporting foundation.
