Book excerpt: The Mystique of the Skies--As Heaven or Hell The book's subtitle provides an inkling of the wondrous and sometimes brutal activities of mankind in the sky. Since the first powered flight by the Wright brothers in 1903, the air above the Earth has enveloped countless instances of lifesaving aerial exertions and, on the other hand, vicious warmongering. The skies can be used for the benefit of, and also, the unwarranted deprivation and destruction of people. From personal experiences, and documented events in the history of aviation, the author's memoirs describe events illustrating the unpredictable nature of mankind. Interwoven are recitations of airborne bliss, tension, and unexplained aerial phenomena. Centuries-old cultural or racial customs often affect aviation endeavors and evoked personal conflicts which had to be resolved within the author's own perception of Spirituality. Occasionally, aviation-related dilemmas can catch a crewmember totally unprepared. Such occurrences can cause apprehension, a feeling of helplessness, or even terror. It is a heartwarming experience when such quandaries are resolved by the intervention of unseen forces, undefined by science or not fully articulated by religion. The writer regards flying as a combined physical, mental, and spiritual immersion in the medium of air, whether piloting a gigantic airliner or a fragile hang glider. A pilot, by virtue of being "up front" and particularly when transporting passengers, assumes the role of a committed, principled leader. This exemplifies the type of selfless leadership that is sorely needed in our world of human frailty.

Book excerpt: “Rodrigues uses subtle metaphors of haunting memory to dramatize the Portuguese penetrationof the Arab trading world of the sixteenth century.” —Jaysinh Birjepatil, author of The Good Muslim of Jackson Heights Love and Samsara is an epic diorama of the world in the early 16th century, stretching from Europe to Asia, taking in Brazil, Africa, the Middle East, India, and then the lands below the wind, the monsoon countries of South East Asia. The hero, a renowned Arab ship pilot, hunted down for eloping with a Jain girl, escapes from their assassins by guiding Vasco da Gama and the Portuguese ships to Calicut, the major emporium of the spice trade. Only later does he realize the tremendous significance of his innocent betrayal, for it leads to the Portuguese imperial domination of the oceansea. This marks a turning point in history, a time when the modern world becomes inexorably linked with power—gunpowder for cannon, printing for the spread of knowledge, and astronomy for a new understanding of the heavens. A time also of significant encounter among the world’s major religions—Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism—with their complex languages, philosophies and theologies. Here is a samsara crowded with adventure, history, tragic love, philosophical speculation, religious confrontation, suspense and mystery, that reaches its climax in 1510 with the Portuguese conquest of Goa. “This is fiction at its best, a masterful multi-layered epic novel, compelling and lyrical at the same time that will challenge and delight any devotee of the genre and of the English language.” —Roberto Severino, Professor Emeritus of Italian, Georgetown University “The most epic novel written about Goa.” —José Pereira, author of Suárez: Between Scholasticism and Modernity

Book excerpt: Drawing on cases from electricity distribution and other infrastructure industries, and from experiences spanning Asia, Africa and Latin America, this book examines new business models to bring basic utility services to the four billion people comprising the base of the socio-economic pyramid. Access to utilities is key for achieving economic growth and improving the lives of citizens worldwide. Throughout the world, people continue to suffer severe electricity shortages and lack potable water. Contributors to this work, who include academics and practitioners from the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, USAID, the AES Corporation and several academic institutions, show that access to utilities is key for achieving economic growth and improving the lives of citizens worldwide. They offer analysis of business models in utilities serving the bottom of the pyramid (BOP) through market mechanisms and showcase innovations in organizational processes and services in order to effectively reach the BOP. The book also discusses the key factors in developing profitable business ventures that can engage the world's four billion poor. The book is aimed at both academics with an interest in applied research in business and the role of markets in servicing the poor worldwide, practitioners, public sector organizations and NGOs engaged in supplying, financing, and managing microcredit and market initiatives with low-income sectors, and international utility companies and other firms seeking to expand in emerging markets. In addition, the book will be useful as a text in a variety of courses and will give readers a deeper understanding of the potential for business to alleviate poverty, as well as inspire a deeper involvement in social issues as a career alternative or voluntary activity.

Book excerpt: A poetic and nuanced exploration of the human experience of flight that reminds us of the full imaginative weight of our most ordinary journeys—and reawakens our capacity to be amazed. The twenty-first century has relegated airplane flight—a once remarkable feat of human ingenuity—to the realm of the mundane. Mark Vanhoenacker, a 747 pilot who left academia and a career in the business world to pursue his childhood dream of flight, asks us to reimagine what we—both as pilots and as passengers—are actually doing when we enter the world between departure and discovery. In a seamless fusion of history, politics, geography, meteorology, ecology, family, and physics, Vanhoenacker vaults across geographical and cultural boundaries; above mountains, oceans, and deserts; through snow, wind, and rain, renewing a simultaneously humbling and almost superhuman activity that affords us unparalleled perspectives on the planet we inhabit and the communities we form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flying has been my dream since before I can remember... literally. My Aunt Odette tells me that when I was three years old, she took me with her to the Port-au-Prince International Airport to pick someone up, and when I saw an airliner up close for the first time, I excitedly yelled out, "I want to drive that!" I don't recall that event, but it serves as evidence that my fascination with flying began at a remarkably young age. My first memory of wanting to fly came a few years later at the age of seven. I was on my very first flight, from Port-au-Prince to New York City, where I was going to start a new life in a new country. I remember looking at all the people boarding the airplane and wondering how that "big silver bird" was going to get us into the air (that silver bird was an American Airlines Boeing 727). To this day, the whole experience is vivid in my mind: being greeted with a smile by the captain at the aircraft entry door, the funny feeling in my stomach as the plane accelerated down the runway, leaping into the air, and my utter disbelief that we didn't drop out of the sky! I was mesmerized by it all, and by the time the plane came to a stop at our gate, my dream had been born... I wanted to become an airline pilot. I have been blessed to be living that dream since 1999. It's a dream from which I hope never to awaken. This is the story of the lifelong journey I have taken in realizing that dream. I invite you to come along with me as we go from my birth in Haiti to the present day, as I live my dream every day. You will come with me as I move to America at the age of seven, a country I knew nothing about and whose language I didn't speak, a land that would truly prove to be "the land of opportunity." You will feel my sense of wonder and bewilderment growing up in New York City, trying to understand my new world. You will face my struggles to fit in with the kids in the housing project where my family lived for a decade as Mom and Dad saved money to buy a house. You will meet my parents, who encouraged my dream of flying, and my fifth grade teacher who helped me to see that it was possible not only to dream it, but also to achieve it. It's a story of potential fulfilled, and my family's sacrifices to get me through college and flight school. You will fly with me from my first lesson to my first airline job as a copilot, to the day I earned my four-stripes and first heard someone call me "Captain." You will sit with me in the captain's seat as I fly an airline jet over Haiti for the first time, looking down from thirty-eight thousand feet onto the land of my birth where my dream had been born. You will soar with me over the majestic Amazon jungle in Brazil, over the desert-flanked Nile River in Egypt, and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. You will fly with me through New York City blizzards, Indian monsoons, and Arabian sandstorms. You will travel with me on adventures to Europe, South America, the Middle East, South Asia, the Caribbean, and other parts of the world I used to dream of going to as a child; places that have affected me profoundly and where I left a little part of myself. I have seen all these things through the eyes of the seven year-old boy from Haiti that I was and in many ways, still am; the little boy who had a sense of just how incredible the world and life are, who dreamt of a life of worldwide adventure, and was blessed to have his dream come true. That is the reason for the title of this book, "The Seven Year-Old Pilot," because even after years of flying around the world, in many ways, I still feel like that little boy, and I always try to approach my travels and my life with his sense of gratitude, amazement, and awe. I truly believe that every one of us has life experiences and lessons worth sharing that can inspire, enlighten, teach, and benefit others because we have all liv

Book excerpt: An elegant saga with storylines across eras and family generations, set with geographical precision in both modern and Roman Portugal. A heartwarming tale of love, tragedy, loss, success, friendships, mystery and love rediscovered for Paulo, the urbane successful architect of modern Portugal. Travel around the cities and towns, vineyards and Atlantic litoral landscapes of Portugal with Paulo and his friends and discover the magical history, culture, cuisine and enology of this both ancient and modern country. Marvel at the extraordinary and wonderfully complicated effect of Claudio Bracarri, a Lusitanian Celt of Roman times on Paulo’s life, an effect compounded by the rediscovery of ancient Roman artefacts and documents, once the property of Claudio and the Treasury of the ancient Roman city of Connimbraga. Written with an easy, comfortable classicism, the novel appeals to the sophisticated reader and traveller.
