Book excerpt: Paul the Apostle of Jesus Christ: His Life and Work, His Epistles and His Doctrine - Volume One is one of the most significant theological undertakings of Dr. Ferdinand Christian Baur. Baur was a German theologian, well known for studies of The Bible, who lived until 1860. Baur's central argument throughout Paul the Apostle of Jesus Christ is that the relationship between Paul the Apostle and the Jewish Christians was not as harmonious as it had often been made out to be in theological texts. The first section of the book examines the life and work of the Apostle Paul, including historical details on Paul's first missionary journey, Paul's dealing with the elder Jewish Christian Apostles, and his eventual arrest, imprisonment, and martyrdom in Rome. The second part of the book examines Paul's epistles as they are presented in the New Testament. His epistles to the Galatians, Corinthians, and Romans are all examined separately and in great detail. Paul the Apostle of Jesus Christ is a book that has particular appeal to those interested in theological matters. It is a deep book, and one that expects, although does not rely on, the reader to be familiar with much of the subject matter. Ferdinand Christian Baur is a noted theologian, and his work in Paul the Apostle of Jesus Christ: His Life and Work, His Epistles and His Doctrine - Volume One demonstrates why. This book is a thorough examination of the subject matter, and one that will appeal greatly to those with an interest in theology. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1876 edition. Excerpt: ... FIRST PART. THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE APOSTLE PAUL. CHAPTER I. THE CHURCH AT JERUSALEM BEFORE THE APOSTLE'S CONVERSION. The conversion of the Apostle Paul to Christianity is an event of such peculiar importance in the history of the nascent Church that it can scarcely be understood aright without taking into consideration the condition in which the Church had been during the short time of its existence. But the only thing of which we have any certainty during this earliest period is that which is so closely connected with the name of the Apostle Paul, and to which he himself bears witness (Galatians i. 13, 23; 1 Corinthians xv. 9), namely, that he became a Christian and an Apostle from being a persecutor of the Christian Church. Thus even in the earliest times persecutions had- fallen on the Church at Jerusalem. Persecutions are spoken of in the Acts of the Apostles, but in such a manner that historical criticism must assert its right of doubt and denial with regard to the statement. "When after its weak beginnings the Christian Church had organised itself in the way we all know and into which we will not here further inquire, first inwardly by the power of the Spirit imparted to it as the principle of a new consciousness1 which animated it henceforward and then outwardly after the rapid increase of its numbers, by the first institutions of its social life, a series of measures was taken against the Apostles by the Jewish rulers, induced by a miracle of healing wrought on a man lame from his birth by the Apostles Peter and John on their way to the Temple. The description of this first persecution of the Apostles is characterised by the same idealising tendency which is apparent in the whole description of the progress of the primitive...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis: One hundred and sixty years ago F.C. Baur posed, in inescapably sharp form, a question which has haunted Christianity throughout its history: is Christianity simply a form of Judaism, development from Judaism, or was it, as Baur argued, from the beginning something quite distinct, a religious spirit or consciousness which could not be or become itself until it broke through the limits and restrictions of its historical origins? Baur's radical answer set the agenda for the rest of the nineteenth century, and though neglected for most of the twentieth century, the question has reemerged with renewed force in a post-Holocaust world."--James D.G. Dunn, Emeritus Lightfoot Professor of Divinity, University of Durham "It will be extremely helpful to New Testament critics to have F.C. Baur's influential work on Paul-long out of print and often no longer even available on most theological library shelves-conveniently at hand. Baur's application of Hegel's dialectical theories to the writings of Paul profoundly shaped the discourse of his mid-nineteenth century German contemporaries, including that of those who sought to challenge certain aspects of his interpretation. They did not escape the powerful force of his conceptualization of the world, including a deeply negative evaluation of the Oriental spirit (i.e., Judaism and Jewishness), which was central to his project. The legacy of these developments-the so-called Tubingen school-has deeply influenced NT studies (and arguably world history) ever since, and continues to assert its influence on the interpretation of Paul's voice to this day, although often now in unrecognized ways. With the availability of this edition, that is about to change."-Mark D. Nanos, author of The Galatians Debate, The Irony of Galatians, and The Mystery of Romans "Perhaps the most influential book of nineteenth-century New Testament scholarship, Paul the Apostle of Jesus Christ offered a novel, breathtaking synthesis of the apostle's place in the development of early Christianity. ... In seeking the authentic writings of Paul, the generative center of his thought, the role of the Law and its relationship to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the historical value of the book of Acts, and the views of Paul's opponents, Baur's work set an agenda that continues to dominate modern inquiry."-A. Andrew Das, Niebuhr Distinguished Chair, professor of religious studies, Elmhurst College "The history of Pauline and even New Testament studies is a continuing dialogue with the assumptions and conclusions of Ferdinand Christian Baur. No Pauline scholar-recent efforts notwithstanding-has so shaped the set of questions asked of Paul's letters as did Baur. This is not to say that Baur got it right-far from it. He was no doubt wrong, and sometimes quite wrong, on a number of crucial issues in each of the areas that he so significantly influenced. Nevertheless, his legacy regarding the influence of fundamental conflicts in the early church, and the need for critical rather than simply theological scrutiny of the letters, is still of importance as we continue to study Paul's letters in the context of the New Testament and early Christianity."-Stanley E. Porter, president, dean, and professor of New Testament, McMaster Divinity College.

Book excerpt: "Besides Jesus, no one has kept me from despair, or taken me deeper into the mysteries of the gospel, than the apostle Paul." —John Piper No one has had a greater impact on the world for eternal good than the apostle Paul—except Jesus himself. For John Piper, this impact is very personal. He does not just admire and trust Paul. He loves him. Piper gives us thirty glimpses into why his heart and mind respond this way. Can a Christian-killer really endure 195 lashes from a heart of love? Can a mystic who thinks he was caught up into heaven be a model of lucid rationality? Can an ethnocentric Jew write the most beautiful call to reconciliation? Can a person who lives with the unceasing anguish of empathy be always rejoicing? Can a man's description of the horrors of human sin be exceeded by his delight in human splendor? Can a man with a backbone of steel be as tender as a nursing mother? If we know this man—if we see what Piper sees—we too will love him. Paul's testimony is a matter of life and death. Piper invites you into his relationship with Paul in the hope that you will know life, forever.
