Book excerpt: Professor Bill Faulkner was the father of tourism research in Australia, having spent 20 years in the field, first within government and then in academe. He was a visionary whose impact on the tourism research field extended well beyond Australia. This work contains a collection of Faulkner's publications grouped thematically under the headings Methods, Events, Destinations and Research Agenda. The sections demonstrate how his thinking evolved over time and influenced the intellectual development of the field itself. An introductory chapter describes Faulkner's life and the contribution that he made to the field of tourism research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main contributions of Chapters 4 and 5 were that they established the relationship between immigration to Australia and tourism flows. It was seen that the impact of immigration was higher for outbound travels. The estimated immigration elasticities for inbound travels were 0.028 in the short run and 0.09 in the long run while for outbound travels the estimated elasticities were 0.17 in the short run and 0.44 in the long run. Furthermore, the existing literature on outbound tourism of Australia had revealed that real exchange rate was a poor proxy for prices in studies of outbound tourism. Chapter 5 developed a destination competitiveness index which was included in the model as the price variable. This index outperformed real exchange rate as the proxy for prices. The estimated price elasticities of outbound travel were -0.9 in the short run and -2.43 in the long run. It is concluded that the results generated in this thesis are relevant for matters of policy formulation and implementation. The significance of the migration variable implies that, as immigration continues to grow in Australia, the tourism sector and its suppliers can be expected to benefit. The results convey that decisions made by the policy makers of the tourism sector need to take into account information such as the trends in immigration to Australia and policy changes which may affect these immigration patterns. Destination managers can better predict trends arrivals and departures by taking into account this information. The elasticities obtained in this thesis can be the basis for studies of economic contribution and impact of the tourism industry. Finally, although this study concentrates on Australia, the results obtained are relevant for tourism demand studies of other countries with similar demographic characteristics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of local, regional or national impacts of an influx of tourists – of different kind and origin – has in recent years become a new challenge for economics research in the tourism sector. There is a clear need to develop solid methodologies through which the socio-economic impacts of tourism can be assessed. Tourism impact assessment – as a systematic approach to the estimation of socio-economic effects of tourism on relevant parts of the economy – has become a timely response to the need for appropriate information for stakeholders, both public and private. The present volume brings together a set of recent impact studies – of both a theoretical-methodological and an applied policy-oriented nature – , which have been selected on the basis of their originality or novel contribution to the research in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an outstanding book. It offers a comprehensive range of in-depth case studies that looks at past tourism crisis and analyzes the responses made. A must-read book for those in the industry, related associations and the various levels of government as they consider how to pro-actively deal with the potential for future crisis related to tourism. Perry Hobson, Head, School of Tourism and Hospitaliy Management, Southern Cross University and Editor-in-Chief Journal of Vacation Marketing. Tourism everywhere is vulnerable to changes in public perception. When news about an earthquake, a violent conflict or a contagious disease in a distant location hits the television, tourists cancel holidays. The September 11, 2001 terrorist attack against the USA impacted on airlines and tourist destinations worldwide, as did subsequent attacks on tourists. These events highlight the importance of destination crisis management for the global tourism industry. Experienced tourism marketer and trainer, David Beirman, has created a guide to crisis management for tourism operators and offices. He argues that managing public perception is critical to the recovery of a destination after a crisis, and that much depends on providing clear, frequently updated and accurate information. He provides detailed case studies of different types of crises from around the world, with analyses of the strengths and weaknesses of the approach taken by tourism managers. This is an invaluable reference for tourism managers anywhere in the world, and a useful resource for tourism students.
