Forest structure and composition can be influenced by conifer regeneration in favorable patches, and in arid and semi-arid environments, microsites that ameliorate drought stress are important regeneration sites. Abies magnifica (California red fir) trees have a wide distribution across the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, but grow in a narrow band on the eastern slope of the Carson Range in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada crest. A.magnifica seedlings can be sensitive to summer drought, extreme soil temperatures, and intense solar radiation. Microsite amelioration may aid A.magnifica establishment and survival, and my goal was to understand the role of vegetative microsites in successful A.magnifica regeneration under some of the most arid conditions the species encounters. I compared A.magnifica natural seedling establishment in open and shaded microsites across an altitudinal gradient of environmental stress on the eastern slope of the Carson Range. Seedling distribution, growth, soil moisture and soil temperatures were sampled in the summer of 2011 and 2012. In the fall of 2011, A.magnifica seeds were planted in open and shrub-shaded microsites across the altitudinal range and monitored for emergence and survival the following summer. 2011 and 2012 differed in winter weather conditions, and temperature stress and soil moisture limitations were more extreme following a winter of low snowpack. In 2011, (a year with higher than average snowpack), seedling observations and soil moisture were uniform among microsites and elevations. However, in 2012, (a year with lower than average snowpack), soil moisture was non-uniform across microsites and elevations and seedling observations were higher in microsites with greater soil moisture. Specifically, more seedlings were observed in microsites with greater subsurface moisture, which were open microsites at high elevations and shrub-shaded microsites at low elevations. A very low proportion of seedlings emerged in experimental plots and nearly complete mortality signified significant issues with environmental stress in 2012. Poor success could also be related to seed genetic variability, as A.magnifica seeds were harvested from trees on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada and may not have been as genetically tolerant of drier conditions experienced on the eastern Carson Range. Fewer first-year seedlings were observed in 2012 than 2011, suggesting pulses of seedling emergence in wet years and declines in dry years. Facilitative effects of shrubs varied spatially in the low snowpack year, with shrubs tending to have greater positive effects on soil moisture and temperature at low elevations, where soil moisture was chronically low. The importance of shrub facilitation changed over the altitudinal gradient of stress, consistent with the stress gradient hypothesis. Long-term declines of winter snowpacks could result in declines of A.magnifica seedling emergence, which could alter the overall structure of A.magnifica forests. Facilitative effects were stronger in years with greater environmental stress and weaker in years with less environmental stress, showing evidence of temporal variability of the stress gradient hypothesis. Thus, shrub cover may be vital for maintaining forest structure and composition at low elevations if snowpacks decline in a changing climate. These results highlight the temporal and spatial shifts of shrub facilitation on the emergence and establishment of A.magnifica seedlings, and can help direct future forest management.

Many seeds are produced and dispersed, but most do not germinate or they fail to survive after germination. This severe seed and seedling mortality multiplies the number of seeds required to obtain natural regeneration. It also acts as a selective factor in determining the genetics of future stands. The relation of dispersed seed populations to established seedling populations is not well known for most high elevation forests in the Pacific Northwest. Production and dispersal of conifer seeds in the Abies amabilis forest zone described by Franklin and Dyrness (1973) have been well studied (carkin and others 1978; Franklin and others 1974; Franklin and Smith 1974a, 1974b), but little work has been done on the fate of those seeds. Sullivan (1978) compared forest regenera tion on clearcuts in several habitat types within the Abies amabilis zone and con cluded that regeneration differed significantly among habitat types, but he did not relate his observations and conclusions to the seed supply. Neither did Halverson and Emmingham who were unable to correlate forest regeneration in the Abies amabilis zone with habitat types, but found extremes in environment to be the most probable cause of regeneration failure. Seidel (1979a) surveyed mixed conifer regeneration on many clearcuts along the east side of the Cascade Range and in the Blue Mountains of Oregon. He measured the variation among plant community types and geographic locations, but did not relate established regeneration to amounts of seed or early seedling mortality and did not derive any ratios for seeds to established seedlings. Seidel (1979b) also studied regeneration after shelterwood cutting in a grand fir (abies grandis (dougl. Ex D. Don) Lindl.) Shasta red fir (abies magnifica var. Shastensis Lemm.) stand in central Oregon. The number of sound seeds collected in his seed traps can be compared to the number of seedlings that became established during the 5-year measurement period to derive seed-to-seedling ratios for four slash treatments under three overstory densities. Those ratios varied from about on bulldozed seedbeds under an overstory with basal area of square meters per hectare to about on undisturbed seedbeds under the same overstory. In container-grown seedlings, it was found that warm thermoperiod with moderate moisture stress and cool thermoperiod with low moisture stress induced dormancy in the initial stage of the experiment. Short photoperiod with warm thermoperiod and long photoperiod with cool thermoperiod hastened onset of dormancy in a later stage. Short photoperiod and cool thermoperiod, which acted independently, could also induce dormancy. Both Shasta red fir and noble fir seedlings showed a typical terminal bud dormancy. Six to eight weeks of chilling were required to overcome the dormancy. Dormancy induction method influenced chilling requirements. Seedlings induced into dormancy by long cool days required less chilling than did the seedlings induced into dormancy by short warm days. Long photoperiod during chilling could conpensate for inadequate chilling. The survival, phenology and growth of non-chilled true fir seedlings were determined for two seasons in two irrigation regimes. Regardless of species, survival was not different between any treatments. Unchilled terminal buds stayed inactive during the first season after outplanting. These terminal buds resumed growth after being chilled naturally during the winter. Lateral branch development was observed for both growing seasons. Growth was greater in the moist irrigation regime than the dry irrigation regime. Dormancy induction in natural low- and high-elevation environments was investigated by using a switch-back experimental design. It was determined that lower night temperature in the high-elevation areas triggered growth cessation in the seedlings and thus earlier dormancy. High moisture stress early in the season could also prematurely cease seedling growth and impose stress-induced dormancy.
