Book Synopsis Drivers, trends, and consequences of changing household employment patterns in rural Bangladesh by : Sen, Binayak
Download or read book Drivers, trends, and consequences of changing household employment patterns in rural Bangladesh written by Sen, Binayak and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on rural nonfarm development via the route of salaried employment. The analysis is at the rural household level for two types of households: “mixed” households whereby some workers remain in the farm sector and others pursue nonfarm activities and the rural households who are exclusively dependent on nonfarm employment (rural nonfarm). The study has produced three major findings. First, compared with the mixed or farm-only households, nonfarm households seem to have more income. Second, nonfarm households discourage unpaid work, especially among female workers, in sharp contrast to the increasing share of unpaid work in both farm and mixed households. Third, nonfarm households increasingly rely, for their livelihoods, on salaried employment, which is likely to be of a more durable nature than the juggling of multiple occupations observed in the case of mixed households. Analysis of possible factors influencing the formation of nonfarm households shows the importance of human capital, non-land assets, and proximity to larger towns, while natural shocks seem to encourage the formation of mixed households and remittance from abroad tends to stimulate the farm orientation.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of technological development on household savings is of central importance to development students and practitioners attempting to devise effective policy for economic growth in general and agricultural capital formation in particular. For the predominantly agricultural economy of Bangladesh, this is an important issue due to the very low rate of growth in the agriculture sector there during the last three decades. This study investigates the relationship between investment opportunities and saving from a theoretical perspective, measures the impact of High Yielding Variety technology on saving in the case of Bangladesh, and compares the rate of return from some common types of investments of rural households in Bangladesh.

Book excerpt: South-South migration contributes significantly to the development of the emerging economies, the migration of receiving countries and, at the same time, generates a major share of remittance income flowing into the sending countries. By capturing field experience and observations from a number of research studies, this book provides a robust catalogue of data, practical experience and analysis focused on the significant issues, risks and challenges that are associated with this evolving phenomenon in international migration. The book also critically explores new theoretical perspectives by highlighting new policy directions for both sending and receiving countries relevant to making South-South migration more efficient, attractive and mutually beneficial.
