Book excerpt: This book was born from the belief that, in an era of narrowly specialized experts, looking beyond the arbitrary borders on one's own field offered the only chance for intellectual survival. The spectacular growth of economics in the past forty years or so has been accompanied by the rapid fragmentation process that seems to characterize the making of any science. If we chose to view this as a symptom of scientific maturity, we would be tempted to welcome this process. But, as economists, we should think of its opportunity cost. In one sense this work attempts to assess the price we have chosen to pay - consciously or not - to win recognition of our scientific status from other disciplines. If, after going through this book, the reader comes out with the feeling that this shadow price is not all shadow after all, we will have achieved one of our goals! Both the merits and defects of this book stem from the fact that we tried to pursue a different approach in the study of economics. This line of thought originates in the area of pattern recognition and machine learn ing. For the past two decades, a number of applied mathematicans, logicians, and engineers have systematically tried to mimic human intelli gence in one of its most important functions viz. that of identifying and recognizing patterns in an a priori unorganized and confusing environment.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the third IAU conference on the Gravita tional N-Body Problem. The first IAU conference [IJ, six years ago, was motivated by the renaissance in Celestial Mechanics following the launching of artificial earth satellites, and was an attempt to bring to bear on the problems of Stellar Dynamics the sophisticated analytical techniques of Celestial Mechanics. That meeting was an outgrowth of the 'Summer Institutes in Celestial Mechanics' initiated by Dirk Brouwer. By the second IAU conference [2J, our interest had been captured by the attempts to simulate stellar systems on the computer. Computer simulation is now an essential part of stellar dynamics; journals of computational physics have started in the United Kingdom and in the United States and symposia on computer simulation of many-body problems have become a perennial event [3,4, 5]. Although our early hopes that the computer would 'solve' our problem have been tempered by experience, some techniques of computer simulation have now matured through five years of testing and use. A working description of the six most popular methods is appended to this volume. During the past three years, stellar dynamicists have followed closely the develop ments in the related field of Plasma Physics. The contexts of Plasma and Stellar Physics are deceptively similar; at first, results from Plasma Physics were bodily transferred to stellar systems by 'changing the sign of the coupling'. We are more sophisticated and more skeptical now.

Book excerpt: With the dawn of the twenty-first century comes the awareness that current rapid political-economic-social and technological transformations will affect our of living, by producing new forms of information, communications, common way market, work-style and leisure. In this context, human behaviour will certainly change its 'fixed' parameters. It is likely that the relationships between internal structures and external influences, between individual components and collective behaviour, as well as between multi-scale networks and interrelated dynamics, will show spatio-temporal patterns which will be difficult to predict by means of our usual tools. As a consequence, academic research is increasingly being required to play an active role in addressing new ways of understanding and forecasting the sets of interacting structures, ranging from the technical to the organizational, and from the social to the economic and political levels, while at the same time incorporating concerns about the 'new' economy, environment, society, information and technology. It is now evident that social science - especially spatial and economic scienc- needs innovative 'paths', together with continuous cross-fertilization among the many disciplines involved. In order to investigate these intriguing perspectives, we seem to have embarked on an era of methodological reflections - rather than developing strong theoretical foundations. This volume aims to provide an overview of these new insights and frontiers for theoretical/methodological studies and research applications in the space-economy.
