Book excerpt: This book synthesizes research findings on patterns in the last twenty years or so in order to argue for a theory of graded representations in pattern generalization. While research results drawn from investigations conducted with different age-level groups have sufficiently demonstrated varying shifts in structural awareness and competence, which influence the eventual shape of an intended generalization, such shifts, however, are not necessarily permanent due to other pertinent factors such as the complexity of patterning tasks. The book proposes an alternative view of pattern generalization, that is, one that is not about shifts or transition phases but graded depending on individual experiences with target patterns. The theory of graded representations involving pattern generalization offers a much more robust understanding of differences in patterning competence since it is sensitive to varying levels of entry into generalization. Empirical evidence will be provided to demonstrate this alternative view, which is drawn from the author’s longitudinal work with elementary and middle school children, including several investigations conducted with preservice elementary majors. Two chapters of the book will be devoted to extending pattern generalization activity to arithmetic and algebraic learning of concepts and processes. The concluding chapter addresses the pedagogical significance of pattern learning in the school mathematics curriculum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the finest of all the available books on the making of patchwork quilts. The author is recognized as having been one of our country's leading authorities on this venerable art, and in this book she divulges many a secret that will assist you in making quilts of the highest quality. The book contains over 100 patchwork patterns, with complete instructions for cutting and sewing. All conceivable sorts of designs are diagrammed and carefully described: flower designs, rainbows designs, Irish chains, fish and bird and leaf designs. The book shows you, step by step, all the details of making each kind of quilt: it covers choice of pattern, piece vs. patch quilting, simple and complex quilts, choice of quilt materials, interlining materials, lining and thread materials, cutting and piecing, the applique process, various methods of setting together, quilt sizes, borders, scallops, flounces, valances, straight line and close shell quilting, methods of stamping, perforated quilting patterns, quilting the quilt, putting into frames, quilting in a small space, embroidery quilts, and many other topics. The book is written in an entertaining manner. The author weaves a great deal of rosy humor into the lining of her instructions, as well as some interesting facts about the history of quilting, quilt materials, patterns, and some really choice folklore about the origin of the highly ingenious names of the patterns: "Monkey Wrench," "Road to California," "Lafayette Orange Peel," "Drunkard's Path," and "Crossed Canoes," to name a few. The book is not technical in any sense of the word. You can use it to make beautiful quilts provided only that you know the fundamentals of sewing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this intimate, engaging book, John Demos offers an illuminating portrait of how colonial Americans, from the first settlers to the postrevolutionary generation, viewed their life experiences. He also offers an invaluable inside look into the craft of a master social historian as he unearths--in sometimes unexpected places--fragments of evidence that help us probe the interior lives of people from the faraway past. The earliest settlers lived in a traditional world of natural cycles that shaped their behavior: day and night; seasonal rhythms; the lunar cycle; the life cycle itself. Indeed, so basic were these elements that "almost no one felt a need to comment on them." Yet he finds cyclical patterns--in the seasonal foods they ate, in the spike in marriages following the autumn harvest. Witchcraft cases reveal the different emotional reactions to day versus night, as accidental mishaps in the light become fearful nighttime mysteries. During the transitional world of the American Revolution, people began to see their society in newer terms but seemed unable or unwilling to come to terms with that novelty. Americans became new, Demos points out, before they fully understood what it meant. Their cyclical frame of reference was coming unmoored, giving way to a linear world view in early nineteenth-century America that is neatly captured by Kentucky doctor Daniel Drake's description of the chronography of his life. In his meditation on these three worlds, Demos brilliantly demonstrates how large historical forces are reflected in individual lives. With the imaginative insights and personable touch that we have come to expect from this fine chronicler of the human condition, "Circles and Lines" is vintage John Demos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on selected topics that the authors taught in math circles for elementary school students at the University of California, Berkeley; Stanford University; Dominican University (Marin County, CA); and the University of Oregon (Eugene). It is intended for people who are already running a math circle or who are thinking about organizing one. It can be used by parents to help their motivated, math-loving kids or by elementary school teachers. We also hope that bright fourth or fifth graders will be able to read this book on their own. The main features of this book are the logical sequence of the problems, the description of class reactions, and the hints given to kids when they get stuck. This book tries to keep the balance between two goals: inspire readers to invent their own original approaches while being detailed enough to work as a fallback in case the teacher needs to prepare a lesson on short notice. It introduces kids to combinatorics, Fibonacci numbers, Pascal's triangle, and the notion of area, among other things. The authors chose topics with deep mathematical context. These topics are just as engaging and entertaining to children as typical “recreational math” problems, but they can be developed deeper and to more advanced levels. In the interest of fostering a greater awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life, MSRI and the AMS are publishing books in the Mathematical Circles Library series as a service to young people, their parents and teachers, and the mathematics profession.
