Book excerpt: This Lecture Notes Volume represents the first time any of the summer school lectures have been collected and published on a discrete subject rather than grouping all of a season's lectures together. This volume provides a broad survey of current thought on the problem of pattern formation. Spanning six years of summer school lectures, it includes articles which examine the origin and evolution of spatial patterns in physio-chemical and biological systems from a great diversity of theoretical and mechanistic perspectives. In addition, most of these pieces have been updated by their authors and three articles never previously published have been added.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic aim of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "New Trends in Nonlinear Dynamics and Pattern-Forming Phenomena: The Geometry of Nonequilibrium" was to bring together researchers from various areas of physics to review and explore new ideas regarding the organisation of systems driven far from equilibrium. Such systems are characterized by a close relationship between broken spatial and tempo ral symmetries. The main topics of interest included pattern formation in chemical systems, materials and convection, traveling waves in binary fluids and liquid crystals, defects and their role in the disorganisa tion of structures, spatio-temporal intermittency, instabilities and large-scale vortices in open flows, the mathematics of non-equilibrium systems, turbulence, and last but not least growth phenomena. Written contributions from participants have been grouped into chapters addressing these different areas. For additional clarity, the first chapter on pattern formation has been subdivided into sections. One of the main concerns was to focus on the unifying features between these diverse topics. The various scientific communities repre sented were encouraged to discuss and compare their approach so as to mutually benefit their respective fields. We hope that, to a large degree, these goals have been met and we thank all the participants for their efforts. The workshop was held in Cargese (Corsica, France) at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques from August 2nd to August 12th, 1988. We greatly thank Yves Pomeau and Daniel Walgraef who, as members of the organising committee, gave us valuable advice and encouragements.
Book Synopsis Statistical Physics: Proceedings Of The 2th Tohwa Univ International Meeting by : Michio Tokuyama
Download or read book Statistical Physics: Proceedings Of The 2th Tohwa Univ International Meeting written by Michio Tokuyama and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-04-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical physics is one of the fundamental branches of modern science. It provides a useful tool constructing a bridge from the microscopic to the macroscopic world. In the last forty years, most of the extensive applications have been made successfully in a variety of fields, such as physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and even astronomy, where many new concepts and methods have been developed. The purpose of this meeting is to provide an opportunity for young researchers in experimental, theoretical and computational fields to communicate with one another using the common language of statistical physics, and thus foster many-body interactions among themselves.

Book Synopsis Dissipative Structures and Weak Turbulence by :
Download or read book Dissipative Structures and Weak Turbulence written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dissipative Structure and Weak Turbulence provides an understanding of the emergence and evolution of structures in macroscopic systems. This book discusses the emergence of dissipative structures. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the stability of a fluid layer with potentially unstable density stratification in the field of gravity. This text then explains the theoretical description of the dynamics of a given system at a formal level. Other chapters consider several examples of how such simplified models can be derived, complicating the picture progressively to account for other phenomena. This book discusses as well the theory and experiments on plain Rayleigh–Bénard convection by setting first the theoretical frame and deriving the analytical solution of the marginal stability problem. The final chapter deals with building a bridge between chaos as studied in weakly confined systems and more advanced turbulence in the most conventional sense. This book is a valuable resource for physicists.

Book Synopsis Solids Far from Equilibrium by : C. Godrèche
Download or read book Solids Far from Equilibrium written by C. Godrèche and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-01-09 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, this book, based on the 1989 Beg-Rohu summer school, contains six sets of pedagogical lectures by internationally respected researchers on the statistical physics of crystal growth. Providing a course in which the phenomena of shape and growth are viewed from a fresh vantage point, the lectures cover a variety of developments in the field and reflect on problems that have received inadequate attention. Statistical physicists, condensed matter physicists, metallurgists, and applied mathematicians will find this a stimulating and valuable book on an important topic.
