Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: physical edition. Nursing Outcomes: State of the Science is an invaluable resource for nurse researchers, scholars, and health care professionals committed to effective, quality nursing care as evidenced by nursing-sensitive outcomes measurement. This text concentrates on outcome indicators which focus on how patients and their conditions are affected by their interaction with nursing staff. Each chapter includes a concept analysis of the outcome concept; then defining characteristics are identified and a conceptual definition is proposed. Factors that influence the outcome concept are discussed, as well as the consequences for clients' health and well-being. The strength of the evidence is reviewed concerning the sensitivity of the outcome concept to nursing structure variables and nursing/processes interventions. The author offers a comprehensive synthesis of the literature, critically reviews the quality of the evidence, and provides direction for the selection of outcome variables

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies have shown a significant correlation between patient complaints and inadequate communication. Patient satisfaction scores are publicly available with Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results, providing consumers with the ability to compare hospitals. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act mandate penalties for hospitals achieving low satisfaction scores. One way to improve satisfaction scores in the Emergency Department (ED) is to enhance communication, an easy to achieve and simple solution is to incorporate hourly rounding. This process not only improves communication, but also provides the opportunity for health care workers to anticipate needs, reduce risks, and improve patient outcome. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) can be used during the implementation process. There are several factors involved with strategic planning, including ways to develop an implementation plan, involving key stakeholders, assessing current policy, and evaluating tools used to implement the plan and disseminate evidence. Evaluation is the final stage and should include discussions to evaluate the effectiveness during and several months after the process has been initiated.

Book excerpt: "Nursing Services represent approximately 40% of hospital personnel costs (Blegen, Goode, & Reed, 1998; Welton, Unruh, & Halloran, 2006). In this era of nursing shortages and debate about the value of the nursing role, ongoing evaluation of nursing interventions through an evidence-based practice (EBP) process is vital in validating the utility of nursing services, particularly with respect to patient outcomes. Few healthcare professionals would disagree that nurses play a key role in influencing outcomes related to the incidence of patient falls and patient satisfaction. When there appears to be a direct relationship between nursing interventions or activities and patient outcomes, the problem or particular issue is identified as "nurse-sensitive." This project evaluated the impact of a practice change, hourly nurse rounds, on patient safety, specifically patient falls, and overall patient satisfaction with the care provided on inpatient medical-surgical units." - from Overview.

Book excerpt: The revised La Monica-Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale (LOPSS) was used to collect information about patient satisfaction with specific nursing care behaviors in a general medical-surgical unit of a rural, Midwestern hospital. Additional validity checks for overall satisfaction with nursing care and hospitalization and intent to recommend the hospital to others were positively correlated with total scores. Results indicate the scale may be useful for this population: however, additional testing should be conducted on a larger sample from a more diverse population.
