Early infant nonverbal referential communication abilities have been posited to be key infant contributions to parent-child interactions. Nonverbal referential communication is frequently, but not always, associated with social competence in typically developing children, and is consistently related to social abilities in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Nonverbal referential communication difficulties are characteristic in children with ASD, and the younger siblings of children with ASD (High-Risk infants) have demonstrated such impairments by two years of age. The current study examined the impact of early nonverbal referential communication on the quality of toddler interactive behavior during play with their parent in the second year of life. Early nonverbal referential communication was also examined as a predictor of parent behavior quality during play, as it has been suggested that early behavioral differences in children at risk for an ASD may alter their social environment due to impaired interaction abilities. Early nonverbal referential communication did not predict toddler or parent behavior quality during play. Nonverbal referential communication may be associated with specific, not overall quality of, social interactive behaviors in toddlers and parents. The parents of High- and Low-Risk infants did not differ in mean level of behavior quality during play, and toddlers did not differ by risk status in mean level of behavior quality. Parent and toddler behavior quality were strongly correlated. The association between toddler and parent behavior quality was moderated by risk status, such that parent and toddler behavior quality was strongly positively associated for Low-Risk infants. For High-Risk infants, parent behavior quality was not impacted by toddler behavior quality. While the current study does not support the direct effect of infant nonverbal referential communication on the overall quality of toddler and parent behavior during play, it adds to our understanding of the potential effects of having a High-Risk infant on parent behavior.The parent-child relationship is a central forum for the development of social and communication competencies within the first two years of life, with both parents and infants contributing to the development of these abilities. Book excerpt: The transactional model (Sameroff, 1975) supports the notion that bidirectional influences of the child and his/her early caregiving environment have a profound impact on child development. Thus, it behooves researchers to consider child and parent characteristics, as well as parent-child dynamics, which might lead to more or less optimal developmental trajectories. This dissertation used a transactional approach to study synchrony during early childhood. In this collection of studies, synchrony is defined as the degree to which a parent’s nonverbal and verbal communication follows or redirects their child’s focus of attention and action during play (Siller & Sigman, 2002). Parent-child dyads engaged in an unstructured free play session with a standardized set of toys, which was later coded for Synchrony (Siller & Sigman, 2002, 2008). 1) The first study included typically developing toddlers and their mothers. It tested associations between synchrony and the Emotional Availability (EA) Scales (Biringen, 2008), and also explored associations between synchrony, EA, child temperament, and toddlers’ joint attention abilities. 2) The second study included mothers and typically developing infants. It longitudinally explored the stability of synchrony from 9 to 18 months and whether synchrony predicted individual differences in the development of joint attention from 9 to 18 months and language at 24 months. 3) The third study included mothers and infants with an older sibling with autism (sibs-ASD) or without autism (sibs-TD). It assessed whether certain parent and child characteristics (e.g., parenting stress, infant temperament) contribute to individual differences in synchrony at 12 and 15 months. This body of work helps to: establish the stability of synchrony in early childhood, distinguish synchrony and EA parent-child interaction measures, clarify how synchrony is related to the development of nonverbal and verbal communication, and identify certain parent and child factors that predict individual differences in synchrony.

Book excerpt: Social communication refers to the use of verbal and non-verbal skills in social interactions and encompasses social attention, communication, and symbolic skills. These skills are thought to play an important role in the development of receptive and expressive language. The overarching goal of this dissertation is to evaluate associations between early social communication skills and later language abilities using longitudinal data. The first study in this dissertation explored early social communication skills across three groups: infants with a high probability for autism, who are later diagnosed with autism (HP-ASD), infants with a high probability for autism, who are not later diagnosed with autism (HP-Neg), and infants with a low probability for autism, who are not later diagnosed with autism (LP-Neg). Early social communication skills are a harbinger for later cognitive and language development in infants who develop autism. Hence, investigating these skills in infancy may help shed light on early risk markers and treatment targets. The objective of this study was to examine group differences in social communication skills and explore associations between social communication skills measured at 12-months and language abilities measured at 24-months. HP-ASD infants demonstrated social communication deficits as early as 12-months-of-age, well before autism diagnoses are considered stable. Overall, social communication scores were associated with later receptive and expressive language; however, this association was not significant in the HP-ASD infants. Although previous research has reported associations between social communication and later language in autistic toddlers, the current study explored this association in the youngest sample to date. From a developmental perspective, it is likely that HP-ASD infants had not acquired social communication skills at 12- months that are associated to later language. The second study explored longitudinal trajectories of visual social attention to talking faces in typically developing infants, and the third study explored associations between visual social attention and later language. Previous studies that have used eye tracking to explore developmental changes in visual social attention to the eyes and mouth of talking faces have reported a pattern of increasing attention to the mouth starting at about 8 months of age and peaking at 2 years. This increase in attention to the mouth has been found to be associated with later expressive language abilities. However, longitudinal eye tracking data with frequent sampling across development enabled us to capture drastic shifts in attention between the eyes and mouth of talking faces and enhance our understanding of the putative relationship between visual social attention and later language abilities. The second and third studies of this dissertation focused on expanding on existing research by examining visual social attention in a longitudinal data set and implementing stringent eye tracking quality controls. Typically developing infants did not demonstrate significant changes in visual social attention to the eyes and mouth across development, and gaze patterns were not significantly associated with later language skills. It is likely that a single developmental pattern of visual social attention did not emerge because of high individual variability and small sample sizes. In summary, visual social attention measured using eye tracking was not found to support language development in typically developing infants. However, social communication skills extracted from an observational standardized assessment were associated with later receptive and expressive language. Results also presented compelling evidence for early social communication deficits in HP-ASD infants. The results of this study will inform treatment targets for presymptomatic autism interventions.
