This series (also known as the WHO Blue Books) is regarded as the gold standard for the diagnosis of tumours and comprises a unique synthesis of histopathological diagnosis with digital and molecular pathology. These authoritative and concise reference books provide indispensable international standards for anyone involved in the care of patients with cancer or in cancer research, underpinning individual patient treatment as well as research into all aspects of cancer causation, prevention, therapy, and education. This volume will be of particular interest to pathologists, oncologists, surgeons, and epidemiologists who manage or research soft tissue and bone tumours. Sections are included on all recognized neoplasms of the soft tissue and bone, as well as on genetic tumour syndromes affecting these sites. Since the previous edition, there have been changes based on recent molecular and genetic information, with impact on clinical practice.

Book excerpt: Detection and characterization of bone tumors with imaging remains a big challenge for every radiologist notwithstanding the impressive progress achieved by the introduction of several new imaging modalities. Moreover, new concepts in surgical and oncological treatment of these lesions require from the radiologist appropriate and focused answers to the specifc questions asked by the referring physicians in order to choose the best therapeutic approach for the in- vidual patient. Tis comprehensive textbook describes in detail the possibilities and limits of all moda- ties, including MRI, CT, nuclear medicine and interventional radiological procedures, employed for the modern imaging of tumoral and tumor-like lesions of bone. Teir role in the diagnosis, surgical staging, biopsy and assessment of response to therapy is discussed in detail, covering all tumor subtypes as well as their specifc anatomical location.Well selected and technically imp- cable illustrations strongly enhance the didactic value of this work. I am very much indebted and grateful to the three editors: A. Mark Davies, Murali Sundaram and Steven L. J. James, world authorities in musculoskeletal radiology, for their superb scientifc achievement in preparing and editing this wonderful volume as well as for their individual ch- ters. I would also like to thank the large international group of collaborating authors, who are also widely acknowledged for their specifc expertise in the area of bone tumors, for their outstanding contributions.

The final chapters are devoted to extra-skeletal skeletogenic tumors and pseudo-tumoral lesions that may be confused with true tumors. To emphasis the indissoluble nature of the anatomic and clinical relations, the discussions are preceded by one or two clinical cases. The author imparts his personal experience without ignoring the material in the literature on the subject. Over 1100 radiographic and histologic illustrations. The references mention recent studies but also review the classical studies leading to definition of the various disease entities. The chief differential diagnoses and the pitfalls to be avoided are reviewed in an insert at the end of each chapter.

Mario Campa nacci first published three volumes on musculoskeletal neoplasms and other tu mor-like processes in hone and soft parts in Italian in 1981-1985. This book is an update and expansionofthat book, published for the firsttime in English. In this book Dr. Campanacci brings to the readers the vast experience in musculoskel etal oncology of the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute in Bologna where he has been head of the Oncology Unit for many years. As such, he has had at his disposal the patient records, radiographs and pathologic material dating back to 1905. In fact, a visitor to the Institute will be shown the radiograph made of the first tumor case on records-that of a giant cell tumor of the distal femur. The wealth of cli nical material that has accumulated at the Rizzoli Institute, with exquisite docu mentation and maintenance is a unique resource and testimonial to not only the author but his predecessors. Under Dr. Campanacci's leadership, the Institute has provided care to the majority of patients with neoplasms throughout Italy. Over the past two decades a treatment team with extraordinary ability in radi ology, imaging, pathology, chemotherapy, as well as orthopedic surgery has been assembled.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 945 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ten years have elapsed since the publication of the first edition of Tumors and Tumorlike Lesions of Bone and Joints in 1981. During this period significant progress has been made in diagnosis, and particularly in staging and treatment of bone tumors. In most centers, limb-sparing surgery has replaced the more radical ablative surgery, with or without preoperative chemotherapy. This became possible due to the introduction and increased application of newer high-quality imaging techniques (CT and MRI) and in particular the use of new cytomorphologic methods of diagnosis, especially immunohisto chemistry. These advances in diagnosis and treatment have been reflected by the publication of new editions of several important text books, since their authors - pathologists, orthopedic surgeons, and radiologists - felt the necessity of updating their works in recent years. However, in these publications different criteria of classification were adopted. The number of cases compiled at the Latin American Registry of Bone Pathology increased from 4913 primary bone tumors and more than 1100 tumorlike lesions at the time of publication of the first edition of this book, to 5274 bone tumors and 1665 tumorlike lesions by the end of December 1985, when I finished my work as head of the Registry and occupied the positions of Professor of Orthopedic Pathology at St. Louis University Medical Center and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago.
