Not only do note-taking students typically earn higher grades than their non-note-taking counterparts, they also tend to retain information longer. According to a recent study published in Psychological Science, how you take notes is also an indicator of how you'll remember information. Researchers found that taking notes by hand rather than on a laptop actually increases memory recall and long-term retention. In the study, students who took notes by hand had a greater overall understanding of the subject matter and were able to recall detailed information long after the students who took notes on laptops. The study results led researchers to believe that the act of physically writing notes increases cognition because students must process information as they write. Taking notes by hand, the old-fashioned way, will help you understand course lectures and commit the information to memory. Plus, using notebooks helps you categorize notes by class, allowing you to quickly access the notes you need when you need them. We're committed to creating content that inspires contemplation, creativity, and connection.

Book Synopsis Politics and Culture in Victorian Britain by : Henry Colin Gray Matthew
Download or read book Politics and Culture in Victorian Britain written by Henry Colin Gray Matthew and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last twenty years one of the classical arenas for British historical writing - the politics of Victorian Britain - has ceased to be an obvious or self-evidently important subject. Facing up to this challenge, the historians who have contributed to this volume explore central aspects of that history. They continue to uphold the centrality of politics to Victorian Britain, but suggest that politics must be viewed more broadly, as a concern pervading almost all spheres oflife, just as Victorians themselves would have done. In this way politics penetrates into Victorian culture. 'Politics' can lead us into the ideas governing political action itself; political ideas; international relations; the eduction of men and women; the writing of history and of literature;engagement with past political theorists; and the ideas behind professionalization. Such are some of the themes taken up here. The specific occasion for these essays was as a tribute to the memory of the late Colin Matthew, one of the most eminent recent historians of Victorian Britain, who was himself determined to uphold the contemporary relevance of Victorian political tradition, and to explore the interface between 'politics' and 'culture'. Reflection on his intellectual achievement is a second distinctive component of this book.

Book Synopsis Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts by : Walt Whitman
Download or read book Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts written by Walt Whitman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Series Editors: Gay Wilson Allen and Sculley Bradley Originally published between 1961 and 1984, and now available in paperback for the first time, the critically acclaimed Collected Writings of Walt Whitman captures every facet of one of America’s most important poets. Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts gathers Whitman’s autobiographical notes, his views on contemporary politics, and the writings he made as he educated himself in ancient history, religion and mythology, health (including phrenology), and word-study. Included is material on his Civil War experiences, his love of Abraham Lincoln, his descriptions of various trips to the West and South and of the cities in which he resided, his generally pessimistic view of America’s prospects in the Reconstruction and the Gilded Age, and his reminiscences during his final years and his preoccupation with the increasing ailments that came with old age. Many of these notes served as sources for his poetry—first drafts of some of the poems are included as they appear in the notes—and as the basis for his lectures.

Book Synopsis I’d Like to Say Sorry, but There’s No One to Say Sorry To by : Mikołaj Grynberg
Download or read book I’d Like to Say Sorry, but There’s No One to Say Sorry To written by Mikołaj Grynberg and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the National Jewish Book Awards Finalist, National Translation Award in Prose An exquisitely original collection of darkly funny stories that explore the panorama of Jewish experience in contemporary Poland, from a world-class contemporary writer “These small, searing prose pieces are moving and unsettling at the same time. If the diagnosis they present is right, then we have a great problem in Poland.” —Olga Tokarczuk, Nobel Prize laureate and author of Flights Mikołaj Grynberg is a psychologist and photographer who has spent years collecting and publishing oral histories of Polish Jews. In his first work of fiction—a book that has been widely praised by critics and was shortlisted for Poland’s top literary prize—Grynberg recrafts those histories into little jewels, fictionalized short stories with the ring of truth. Both biting and knowing, I’d Like to Say Sorry, but There’s No One to Say Sorry To takes the form of first-person vignettes, through which Grynberg explores the daily lives and tensions within Poland between Jews and gentiles haunted by the Holocaust and its continuing presence. In “Unnecessary Trouble,” a grandmother discloses on her deathbed that she is Jewish; she does not want to die without her family knowing. What is passed on to the family is fear and the struggle of what to do with this information. In “Cacophony,” Jewish identity is explored through names, as Miron and his son Jurek demonstrate how heritage is both accepted and denied. In “My Five Jews,” a non-Jewish narrator remembers five interactions with her Jewish countrymen, and her own anti-Semitism, ruefully noting that perhaps she was wrong and should apologize, but no one is left to say “I’m sorry” to. Each of the thirty-one stories is a dazzling and haunting mini-monologue that highlights a different facet of modern Poland’s complex and difficult relationship with its Jewish past.

Book Synopsis Mr Charles Booth's Inquiry by : Rosemary O'Day
Download or read book Mr Charles Booth's Inquiry written by Rosemary O'Day and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1993-07-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Booth's pioneering survey, Life and Labour of the People in London, published in 17 volumes between 1889 and 1903, was a landmark in empirical social investigation. His panorama of London life has dominated all subsequent accounts: its scope, precision and detail make it an unrivalled source for the period. Mr. Charles Booth's Inquiry is the first systematic account of the making of the survey, based upon an intensive examination of the huge Booth archive. This contains far more material than was eventually published, in particular on women, work, religion, education, housing and social relations, as well as on poverty. While the book acknowledges the leading role of Booth himself, it highlights the significance of the contributions of his associates, including Beatrice Potter (Webb), Octavia Hill, Llewellyn Smith and G.H. Duckworth. Life and Labour of the People in London is a founding text of both social history and modern sociology. It has however commonly been misunderstood and frequently misused. Mr. Charles Booth's Inquiry sets the survey in perspective and demonstrates the richness of the Booth archive and its potential for modern scholarship in both history and the social sciences.
