Book excerpt: "Signal and power integrity have become a dominant performance limiting factor in the designof integrated circuits. This has led to the need for accurate time-domain models for signalinterconnects, power delivery networks, and other passive structures used for signal and powerdelivery. Such models are difficult to obtain using analytical physics based approaches. However,it is possible to characterize such structures by using measurement or full-wave simulationin order to obtain their sampled frequency-domain S - or Y-parameters. The objective of thisthesis is to develop a systematic and automated algorithm for obtaining a time-domain SPICEcompatiblemacromodel from measured or computed frequency-domain S - or Y-parameterdata. In particular, a set of tools based on Loewner Matrix (LM) interpolation are developedfor generating a macromodel, reducing its order and guaranteeing its accuracy and passivity.This is done for both S - and Y-parameter data. In addition, a modeling tool is developed togenerate a parametric macromodel based on LM interpolation. Furthermore, the proposed approachhas the advantage of improving the CPU cost of standard full-wave analysis methodsby taking advantage of the developed interpolation methods." --
