Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical model has been developed for investigating boundary layer transition control for a two-dimensional flat plate boundary layer. Control of a periodically forced boundary layer in an incompressible fluid is studied using surface heating techniques. The spatially evolving boundary layer is simulated. Navier-Stokes and energy equations are integrated using a fully implicit finite difference/spectral method. The Navier-Stokes equations are in vorticity-velocity form and are coupled with the energy equation through the viscosity dependence on temperature. Both passive and active methods of control by surface heating are investigated. In passive control methods, wall heating is employed to alter the stability characteristics of the mean flow. Both uniform and nonuniform surface temperature distributions are studied. With active control, temperature perturbations are introduced locally along finite heater strips to directly attenuate the instability waves in the flow. A feedback control loop is employed in which a downstream sensor is used to monitor wall shear stress fluctuations. Passive control of small amplitude two-dimensional Tollmien-Schlichting waves and three-dimensional oblique waves are numerically simulated with both uniform and nonuniform passive heating applied. Strong reductions in both amplitude levels and amplification rates are achieved. Active control of small amplitude two-dimensional and three-dimensional disturbances is also numerically simulated. With proper phase control, in phase reinforcement and out of phase attenuation is demonstrated. (KR).

Book excerpt: The call for papers for the rUTAM-Symposium on Mechanics of Passive and Active Flow Control brought an overwhelming response of applications for contributions. Fi nally 12 invited lectures, 48 papers and 23 posters were selected by thc Scientific Com mittee to be presented in the conference. 58 papers are published in this volume. Due to the limited number of pages available, poster presentations could not be considered for publication. The editors would like to thank all the members of the Scientific Committee for their very valuable assistance. The papers presented at the rUT AM Symposium were classified under three groups de voted to • Passive Control Methods, • Active Control Methods and • Control Concepts. This was done to contrast at first between the passive techniques where the control power is mainly supplied by the flow itself and the active techniques where the power is pro vided by external sources; the third group was devoted to control concepts for presenting methods of control theory and new techniques of flow control.

Logically organized into three major parts, the book covers pre- and post-transitional flow, transitional flow, and several advanced topics in periodically disturbed transitional flow. Some of the subjects covered within the book include high-frequency unsteady laminar flow, turbulent flow, natural transition, bypass transition, turbulent spot theory, turbulent spot kinematics and production, correlations for the onset and rate of transition, global and conditional averaging, transitional flow models, wakeinduced transition, multimode transition, and separated-flow transition. Containing some 202 figures (all drawn by the author), 28 tables, 12 appendices, a supplement on tensors, and an extensive bibliography, the 415 page book provides a wealth of data and information about the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The control of the transition from laminar to turbulent flow is of primary interest in many engineering applications. Delay or acceleration of transition to turbulent flow may enhance or restrain the fluid mixing, heat transfer or reduce the friction drag on aerodynamic bodies. This research considered basically two different approaches to influence the transition process. The first approach is based on the idea of changing the stability characteristics of the base flow. This approach we categorize as passive control. Examples of passive control include constant suction or blowing of fluid at the wall, favorable pressure gradient along the streamwise flow direction, or constant heating of the wall surface. The second approach to influence the transition process is termed active control. There the disturbance waves which are amplified because of the instability of the base flow are directly manipulated. The feasibility of this second approach and its potentially considerable advantages were demonstrated. In experiments where amplitude and phase controlled disturbances were produced by thin metal strips or actuators that were flush mounted on the surface of a flat plate. With proper phases and amplitudes, both naturally occurring and controlled (forced) Tollmien-Schlichting waves could be attenuated and thus the transition process delayed.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to recent developments in the field of rotating fluids, in particular the study of Taylor--Couette flow, spherical Couette flow, planar Couette flow, as well as rotating annulus flow. Besides a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art, possible future directions in this research field are investigated. The first part of this volume presents several new results in the classical Taylor--Couette system covering diverse theoretical, experimental and numerical work on bifurcation theory, influence of boundary conditions, counter-rotating flows, spiral vortices and many others. The second part focuses on spherical Couette flows, including isothermal flows, thermal convective motion, as well as magnetohydrodynamics in spherical shells. The remaining parts are devoted to Goertler vortices, rotating annulus flows, as well as superfluid Couette flows. The present book will be of interest to all researchers and graduate students working actively in the field.

Book excerpt: The origins of turbulent flow and the transition from laminar to turbulent flow are among the most important unsolved problems of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. Besides being a fundamental question of fluid mechanics, there are any number of applications for information regarding transition location and the details of the subsequent turbulent flow. The JUT AM Symposium on Laminar-Turbulent Transition, co-hosted by Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, was held in Sedona, Arizona. Although four previous JUT AM Symposia bear the same appellation (Stuttgart 1979, Novosibirsk 1984, Toulouse 1989, and Sendai 1994) the topics that were emphasized at each were different and reflect the evolving nature of our understanding of the transition process. The major contributions of Stuttgart 1979 centered on nonlinear behavior and later stages of transition in two-dimensional boundary layers. Stability of closed systems was also included with Taylor vortices in different geometries. The topics of Novosibirsk 1984 shifted to resonant wave interactions and secondary instabilities in boundary layers. Pipe- and channel-flow transition were discussed as model problems for the boundary layer. Investigations of free shear layers were presented and a heavy dose of supersonic papers appeared for the first time. The character of Toulouse 1989 was also different in that 3-D boundary layers, numerical simulations, streamwise vortices, and foundation papers on receptivity were presented. Sendai 1994 saw a number of papers on swept wings and 3-D boundary layers. Numerical simulations attacked a broader range of problems.
