Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would love for their language lead several men in southern India to burn themselves alive in its name? Passions of the Tongue analyzes the discourses of love, labor, and life that transformed Tamil into an object of such passionate attachment, producing in the process one of modern India's most intense movements for linguistic revival and separatism. Sumathi Ramaswamy suggests that these discourses cannot be contained within a singular metanarrative of linguistic nationalism and instead proposes a new analytic, "language devotion." She uses this concept to track the many ways in which Tamil was imagined by its speakers and connects these multiple imaginings to their experience of colonial and post-colonial modernity. Focusing in particular on the transformation of the language into a goddess, mother, and maiden, Ramaswamy explores the pious, filial, and erotic aspects of Tamil devotion. She considers why, as its speakers sought political and social empowerment, metaphors of motherhood eventually came to dominate representations of the language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helen Stockton DeFoe's world disintegrates after her mother is gunned down on the streets of Richmond. The more intently she begins to observe her remote, detached father, the more she learns about her place within the rarefied world she inhabits. Just when it appears she is at last becoming closer to him, it all falls apart as he coldly undermines her abiding passions, causing her to question the identity she's created. Her rebellion leads her to Europe on a disturbing path dominated by chance and evolving self-realisation. A hugely impressive, beautifully written debut novel narrated by an increasingly obsessive teenager as she embarks on a physical and psychological journey towards maturity.

Asian & Asian American Studies. 2014 Kore Press First Book Winner, selected by Joy Harjo. SILENT ANATOMIES is a poetic-visual hybrid that traverses the body's terrain, examining the phenomena of cultural silences. Whether it is shame obscuring the female body, the social stigma shrouding certain illnesses, or the cryptic stories of her ancestors, Monica Ong interrogates the agency of the daughter, who must decide whether or not to speak out. What happens to stories that go underreported, un-translated, or are completely erased?

Book excerpt: Kristina Soderlund is the daughter of an Oklahoma cotton farmer with a passion for music. Although her parents have mapped out a traditional life for her, she has bigger dreams-dreams of music, art, and beauty; of a university education; and of leaving the farm far behind to open a music studio in Oklahoma City. But for a single woman in 1905, those dreams are unlikely to come true. Even so, she is determined that nothing will get in her way. But when she befriends Pilan' Rousseau, a handsome French-Indian traveler, her resolve weakens. Despite the warnings of her parents and friends, Kristina soon loses her heart to the charming stranger. But fate is not on her side: Pilan' has no plans of staying in Oklahoma City. He's simply passing through on his own journey across America. An accomplished violinist with an intense passion for dance, he dreams of returning to Paris to open his own ballroom dance studio. Kristina's life has never been easy, but now she faces more challenges than ever. Her hopes of love with Pilan' are crushed when he leaves town. Heartbroken, she leaves Oklahoma and all of its pain behind her and heads to Boston. Against seemingly impossible circumstances, both Kristina and Pilan' discover that their passions for music and dance are too great to ignore. But fate has torn them apart. Each will pursue their dreams, but will they be satisfied by ambition-or love?

His poetry balances a high level of intellectual sophistication with an acute awareness of physical materiality. This study analyses the depiction of the human body in Browning's work. Particular emphasis is placed on the dramatic monologue, the poetic form for which he is famous. The main part of the study consists of close readings of Browning's poems and situates his ceuvre in the context of Victorian thinking.
