Book excerpt: Set against the anarchy of the Civil War, this novel tells the story of the raven-haired beauty Lynora Hollingsworth, daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, an aspiring young artist who spends one wild, enchanting evening in the arms of a stranger, but plans to spend the rest of her life in a marriage that has the approval of her family. However, when her fianc rapes her, she decides to strike out on her own rather than subject herself or the child she has discovered she is carrying to this mans cruelty. Rene Michael DuClaire, gambler and notorious rake, to whom she flees for asylum, is also the handsome stranger to whom she has given her heart. When he surmises her condition and realizes he is the father, he marries her against her will. It is a stormy relationship exacerbated by the onslaught of the Civil War, a conflict over which all characters must make some tough decisions regarding their own comfort and their consciences. There are various subplots in the story. One of them deals with the rejected suitors espionage for the Union army, and reveals his sinister nature in his desire for revenge. Another has to do with an Underground Railroad system in Louisiana, and a third deals with the drama of the Civil War itself on the people it touched in the swampy city of New Orleans and surrounding area. The scenes that relate to the war have been researched and are essentially factual, including the shipyard strike, all battle scenes, and even the explosion of the powder plant in Gretna. The captains, majors, and generals were all real people involved in the war at the places described. Only the lieutenants and privates are fictional.

Book Synopsis A Passion for Life by : Cheng-Wen Wu
Download or read book A Passion for Life written by Cheng-Wen Wu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a biography of Dr Felicia Wu. Felicia was a scientist with a successful career in cancer research, but what marked the most extraordinary aspect about her life was her journey as a truly brave cancer patient and an incredibly determined cancer fighter. Originally, this book was intended to be an autobiography written and narrated by Felicia herself. She wanted to share with other cancer sufferers her 13 long years of experience fighting cancer to prepare them for the side effects and uncertainties of the treatment, and also to encourage them to brace and face their own treatment without fear. What she did not realize then was that her time was ticking away, and her life trickling off quickly. Writing her own autobiography proved to be an impossible task. Felicia succumbed to the prolonged battle and departed from this world. Her husband, Dr Cheng-Wen Wu, finished the uncompleted task of writing the book in loving memory of her. The biography of Felicia, originally published in Chinese edition, has been recommended as a reading model for students in schools and was nominated for an award in Taiwan. Felicia''s story had also inspired the production of a documentary film entitled, OC A Passion for Life, OCO funded and sponsored by The American Cancer Society. This biography of Felicia in English edition, painstakingly translated by Dr Cheng-Wen Wu and his collaborating translator, Ms Annie Chen, will certainly live up to its original premise as an inspiration to touch more lives and as a source of strength to all who encounter difficulty, disappointment and hurt at any point of their lives. Download or read book Passion Capital written by Paul Alofs and published by Signal. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passion Capital is a revolutionary asset that will completely change your idea of how to build long-term success for your career, company, or cause. Ask leaders in any country this essential question: "What is your most valuable asset?" and they may suggest one of three traditional forms of capital - financial, human, or intellectual. These are intelligent, well-meaning answers, but they are also completely wrong. More valuable than money, human resources, and intellectual property, Passion Capital is what separates leaders from followers, and innovators from imitators. It is the foundation upon which all other forms of capital are built. Passion is an emotion, but Passion Capital is tangible. It is the energy, intensity, and sustainability leaders use to build lasting value and competitive advantage. Organizations that possess Passion Capital - Apple, Johnson & Johnson, Four Seasons Hotels, the Montreal Canadiens, among others - lead their sectors, while those that rely on established forms of capital may get stuck in neutral and fail to achieve their full potential. Passion Capital presents seven principles for growing and investing in this new asset class and includes over fifty insightful stories drawn from business, not-for-profit, the arts sector, and politics. In this groundbreaking book, veteran business leader Paul Alofs ushers in a whole new way of thinking about the very definition of success and reveals how to acquire the world's most valuable asset and apply it to your career, company, or cause.

Download or read book Drive to Passion written by Ted Obomanu and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The methods of attaining great heights are frequently discussed, with many postulations propounded by pundits and individuals of phenomenal accomplishments, yet reaching the pinnacle of such heights remains ever so elusive to the masses; hence, only a select few are able to make these extraordinary strides. In Drive to Passion, Ted Obomanu chronicles the lives of a few highly accomplished individuals: Harland Sanders, a perfectionist, who was the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC); Winston Churchill, the vivacious and popular prime minister of Britain, who led his country to victory during the Second World War; Joseph Kennedy, patriarch of the Kennedy clan, business mogul, and kingmaker; Sidney Poitier, acclaimed actor and the first African-American movie star to receive an Oscar in a leading role; Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest presidents of the United States, responsible for the abolition of slavery; Suze Orman, financial guru and popular TV host who epitomizes passion; Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the United States, who accomplished this unprecedented feat despite its improbability; Oprah Winfrey, owner of a TV network, one of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world, and was the host and producer of one of the most popular TV shows ever. Obomanu does this to explore firsthand how these individuals were able to reach the summit of their vocations. He also turns the chronicling of these great individuals lives into an intriguing narrative, without compromising the lessons. Obomanu makes significant findings in this book: Passion more than anything else is responsible for success and greatness, which is self-evident in the lives of the great individuals he chronicles; to attain distinction, the quest for passion should always be centered around a niche; passion is fueled by drive, and a shift in focus from passion to the rewards of accomplishments, such as wealth, may potentially derail the attainment of success and greatness; mentors play a huge role in the accomplishment of our goals. At the conclusion of this great reading, Obomanu delves into how spirituality and personal development can greatly enhance the quest for passion and how the pursuit of passion can trigger happiness and longevity. He sums up by asserting that the aspiration of success and greatness should be driven by all the components of passion to ensure its sustainability and potential value to society.
