Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2020, the world collectively hit pause. The coronavirus came unexpectedly and with it a new way of living. For new parents, all prior plans were thrown out the window. They had to adapt to quarantine, new visitation rules at the hospital, and adjust to anxiety at home with a newborn. Born on the Curve is a picture book celebrating the unique experiences of growing families during the pandemic. It highlights commonly used terms like social distancing, essential workers, and contact-free delivery while also putting a positive spin on a tough time. Children born during COVID-19 can use this book to understand how special the beginning of their story truly is. One reader described the book as written for all the moms and dads, grandparents, family and friends, and babies that went through this alone. The most wonderful thing, having a child, couldn't be shared in the traditional way every new parent dreams of. Born on the Curve is a tribute to those families impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Book excerpt: Story Synopsis: Maggie was sleeping peacefully when her father woke her up, stuffed her into a rocket and shot her into space. Alone and confused, she sets off on an epic adventure to find a way home and rescue what has been lost. Along the way, Maggie discovers strange creatures, dangerous enemies and finds out more about herself than she ever thought possible. Every new planet brings peril and now she must confront the greatest challenge of her young life to save herself, Earth, and perhaps even the entire universe. About "Into the Up": Created by a ten year old and her dad, "Into the Up" is a remarkable, exciting and deeply moving story extracted directly from the imagination of youth. Written over the course of two years and finished during the pandemic quarantine of 2020, it tells the story of a young girl, separated from her family and suddenly plunged into a magical adventure overflowing with fantastic characters, quirky humor, and very real danger. The Whole Story (from Wren's father): The story of how "Into the Up" became a book is an interesting one. My eight year old bookworm of a daughter started coming home from school with pages of writing. This wasn't entirely unusual, as her mother is a voracious reader and books have always been a big part of her life. But this wasn't just writing. It was a story. So I began typing it out, intending to make something she could share with her own children one day. As time passed, the story continued to gain structure and relate to her everyday life. Bullies became monsters and toys became allies. This led to the most wonderfully odd conversations about story structure, string theory and multidimensional space travel (you know, the normal father-daughter stuff). It was especially fascinating to watch her developing creativity as a tool to express herself. And so it went, for a year or more as the story grew, day by day, page by page. Then the pandemic of 2020 happened. We suddenly found ourselves in quarantine with time on our hands. A father with a background in computer art, a brilliant bookworm of a mother and an incredibly creative kid. Isolated together. Day after day. So we got to work... editing, polishing and creating what became "Into the Up". It was very much a team effort in the end, but most of it remains Wren's creation. We sincerely hope that you like it and find something meaningful within its pages. My hope is that my daughter has learned the importance of applied creativity and the possibility of the difficult. The time we spent creating it will truly be a highlight of my life as the fantastically lucky father of one fantastically creative, remarkable kid.

This book explores the origin of Gothic cinema in art and literature, tracing its connection to the Gothic revival in architecture, the Gothic novel, landscape, ruins, Egyptology, occultism, sexuality, the mythology of werewolves, the philosophy of Hegel, and many other aspects of the Romantic and Symbolist movements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colin Heywood's classic account of childhood from the early Middle Ages to the First World War combines a long-run historical perspective with a broad geographical spread. This new, comprehensively updated edition incorporates the findings of the most recent research, and in particular revises and expands the sections on theoretical developments in the 'new social studies of childhood', on medieval conceptions of the child, on parenting and on children’s literature. Rather than merely narrating their experiences from the perspectives of adults, Heywood incorporates children’s testimonies, 'looking up' as well as 'down'. Paying careful attention to elements of continuity as well as change, he tells a story of astonishing material improvement for the lives of children in advanced societies, while showing how the business of preparing for adulthood became more and more complicated and fraught with emotional difficulties. Rich with evocative details of everyday life, and providing the most concise and readable synthesis of the literature available, Heywood's book will be indispensable to all those interested in the study of childhood.

Book excerpt: The House Without a Key Earl Derr Biggers The novel, which takes place in 1920s Hawaii, spends time acquainting the reader with the look and feel of the islands of that era from the standpoint of both white and non-white inhabitants, and describes social class structures and customs which have largely vanished in the 21st century. The novel deals with the murder of a former member of Boston society who has lived in Hawaii for a number of years. The main character is the victim's nephew, a straitlaced young Bostonian bond trader, who came to the islands to try to convince his aunt Minerva, whose vacation has extended many months, to return to Boston. The nephew, John Quincy Winterslip, soon falls under the spell of the islands himself, meets an attractive young woman, breaks his engagement to his straitlaced Bostonian fiancee Agatha, and decides after the murder is solved to move to San Francisco. In the interval, he is introduced to many levels of Hawaiian society and is of some assistance to Detective Charlie Chan in solving the mystery.
