Book excerpt: The report is concerned with particle sizing by means of holography which provides a method of reproducing images of small particles dispersed in a volume without the severe difficulty of the limited depth of field of conventional photography and without the disturbance to the sample of collection methods. The size and position of particles may be determined by this method and by extension to double exposure techniques the velocity may also be found. In-line Fraunhofer systems are shown to be especially suitable for particle diameters in the 5 to 500 micron range, provided the maximum recording distance (particle to hologram) does not exceed certain limits set by the smallest particles. In general, if particle size information is desired from a given type generator, one must resort to some form of experimental determination of the distribution. If the source of particle production is a dynamic one involving a reasonable volume, holography provides a tailor-made particle size and velocity distribution detector. This is evidenced by the fact that holography allows the entire volume to be recorded on one exposure without any interference with the volume of interest. Herein lies a very important characteristic of the holographic particle detection technique: It provides a holographic nondestructive testing technique in the fullest sense of the definition of nondestructive testing. This report provides a description of three different systems useful in this technique and includes the experimental results from one of the holographic systems which was used to detect particle size and velocity distribution from the Skylab waste tank.

Book excerpt: Digital in-line holography is an optical technique which can be applied to measure the size, three-dimensional position, and three-component velocity of disperse particle fields. This work summarizes recent developments at Sandia National Laboratories focused on improvement in measurement accuracy, experimental validation, and applications to multiphase flows. New routines are presented which reduce the uncertainty in measured position along the optical axis to a fraction of the particle diameter. Furthermore, application to liquid atomization highlights the ability to measure complex, three-dimensional structures. Finally, investigation of particles traveling at near sonic conditions prove accuracy despite significant experimental noise due to shock-waves.

Book excerpt: In-line Fraunhofer holography has been developed and implemented at Los Alamos National Laboratory to measure particle distributions of fast moving particles. Holography is a unique diagnostic that gives unambiguous information on the size and shapes of particle distributions over a three dimensional volume. Currently, the capability of measuring particles two microns in size which travel many mm/[mu]sec has been demonstrated in hydrodynamic experiments at the Pegasus Pulsed Power Facility. Normally, for setting up an in- line holography experiment for measuring particles a few microns in size, the holographic film would be placed less than one centimeter from the particles. However, due to the high energy associated with the dynamic experiment, an optical relay system is used to relay the interference pattern 35 cm so that glass hologram will survive. After the hologram has been made the data must be extracted. This is accomplished by using a laser to reconstruct the data in space. This three dimensional image is then digitized via a CCD camera and a three axis actuator system. After the data has been digitized it is then analyzed with intelligent image processing algorithms. Details will be described below.

Book excerpt: Approaching the topic of digital holography from the practical perspective of industrial inspection, Digital Holography for MEMS and Microsystem Metrology describes the process of digital holography and its growing applications for MEMS characterization, residual stress measurement, design and evaluation, and device testing and inspection. Asundi also provides a thorough theoretical grounding that enables the reader to understand basic concepts and thus identify areas where this technique can be adopted. This combination of both practical and theoretical approach will ensure the book's relevance and appeal to both researchers and engineers keen to evaluate the potential of digital holography for integration into their existing machines and processes. Addresses particle characterization where digital holography has proven capability for dynamic measurement of particles in 3D for sizing and shape characterization, with applications in microfluidics as well as crystallization and aerosol detection studies. Discusses digital reflection holography, digital transmission holography, digital in-line holography, and digital holographic tomography and applications. Covers other applications including micro-optical and diffractive optical systems and the testing of these components, and bio-imaging.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital in-line holography and plenoptic photography are two techniques for single-shot, volumetric measurement of 3D particle fields. Here we present a preliminary comparison of the two methods by applying plenoptic imaging to experimental configurations that have been previously investigated with digital in-line holography. These experiments include the tracking of secondary droplets from the impact of a water drop on a thin film of water and tracking of pellets from a shotgun. Both plenoptic imaging and digital in-line holography successfully quantify the 3D nature of these particle fields. This includes measurement of the 3D particle position, individual particle sizes, and three-component velocity vectors. For the initial processing methods presented here, both techniques give out-of-plane positional accuracy of approximately 1-2 particle diameters. For a fixed image sensor, digital holography achieves higher effective in-plane spatial resolutions. However, collimated and coherent illumination makes holography susceptible to image distortion through index of refraction gradients, as demonstrated in the shotgun experiments. On the other hand, plenotpic imaging allows for a simpler experimental configuration. Furthermore, due to the use of diffuse, white-light illumination, plenoptic imaging is less susceptible to image distortion in the shotgun experiments. Additional work is needed to better quantify sources of uncertainty, particularly in the plenoptic experiments, as well as develop data processing methodologies optimized for the plenoptic measurement.

Book excerpt: Abstract : We studied the effect of image enhancement techniques on digital holograms based on an in-line holographic system for air-borne cloud droplet measurements. A super-Gaussian filter is applied to pre-process the padded raw hologram prior to the reconstruction. The size distribution of pre-processed hologram with padding and filtering depicts a shift to the larger diameter of cloud particles due to the dilation of detected particle images. The dilated particles reside within the instrument's detectable size range. Two different padding methods: (1) zero padding and (2) mean padding show almost identical consequence for number concentration and particle size dilation. However, the pre-processed hologram with padding alone results in minimal improvement.

Book excerpt: Optical Methods of Measurement: Wholefield Techniques, Second Edition provides a comprehensive collection of wholefield optical measurement techniques for engineering applications. Along with the reorganization of contents, this edition includes a new chapter on optical interference, new material on nondiffracting and singular beams and their applications, and updated bibliography and additional reading sections. The book explores the propagation of laser beams, metrological applications of phase-singular beams, various detectors such as CCD and CMOS devices, and recording materials. It also covers interference, diffraction, and digital fringe pattern measurement techniques, with special emphasis on phase measurement interferometry and algorithms. The remainder of the book focuses on theory, experimental arrangements, and applications of wholefield techniques. The author discusses digital hologram interferometry, digital speckle photography, digital speckle pattern interferometry, Talbot interferometry, and holophotoelasticity. This updated book compiles the major wholefield methods of measurement in one volume. It provides a solid understanding of the techniques by describing the physics behind them. In addition, the examples given illustrate how the techniques solve measurement problems.
