Book excerpt: This final report summarizes the research carried out on the development of numerical approaches for simulating the plumes of pulsed plasma thrusters. A significant amount of progress has been made in the three years of this grant and this summarized in the 9 journals and conference papers that are included as appendices to this report. Our modeling had made progress in al aspects of simulating these complex devices including Teflon ablation, plasma formation, electro-magnetic acceleration, plume expansion, and particulate transport. Several different pulsed plasma thruster devices were modeled including an electro-thermal device (the PPT-4 developed at the University of Illinois by Dr. Rod Burton), and various micro-PPT's (developed at the Air Force Research Laboratory by Dr. Greg Spanjers and colleagues).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work we present a model of the near field plasma plume of a Pulsed Plasma Thruster (PPT). As a working example we consider a micro-PPT developed at the Air Force Research Laboratory. This is a miniaturized design of the axisymmetric PPT with a thrust in the 10 micro-N range that utilizes Teflon(Trademark(sup Trademark)) as a propellant. The plasma plume is simulated using a hybrid fluid-PIC-DSMC approach. The plasma plume model is combined with Teflon(Trademark) ablation and plasma generation models that provide boundary conditions for the plume. This approach provides a consistent description of the plasma flow from the surface into the near plume. The magnetic field diffusion into the plume region is also considered and plasma acceleration by the electromagnetic mechanism is studied. Teflon(Trademark) ablation and plasma generation analyses show that file Teflon(Trademark) surface temperature and plasma parameters are strongly non-uniform in the radial direction. The plasma density near the propellant surface peaks at about 10(exp 24)/cu m in the middle of the propellant face while the electron temperature peaks at about 4 eV near the electrodes. The plume simulation shows that a dense plasma focus is developed at a few millimeters from the thruster exit plane at the axis. This plasma focus exists during the entire pulse, but the plasma density in the focus decreases from about 2x10(exp 22)/cu m at the beginning of the pulse down to 0.3x10(exp 22)/cu m at 5 microsec. The velocity phase is centered at about 20 km/s in the axial direction. At later stages of the pulse there are two ion populations with positive and negative radial velocity. Electron densities predicted by file plume model are compared with near field measurements using a Herriot Cell technique and very good agreement is obtained.

Book excerpt: The discussions and plans on all scienti?c, advisory, and political levels to realize an even larger “European Supercomputer” in Germany, where the hardware costs alone will be hundreds of millions Euro – much more than in the past – are getting closer to realization. As part of the strategy, the three national supercomputing centres HLRS (Stuttgart), NIC/JSC (Julic ̈ h) and LRZ (Munich) have formed the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) as a new virtual organization enabled by an agreement between the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the state ministries for research of Baden-Wurttem ̈ berg, Bayern, and Nordrhein-Westfalen. Already today, the GCS provides the most powerful high-performance computing - frastructure in Europe. Through GCS, HLRS participates in the European project PRACE (Partnership for Advances Computing in Europe) and - tends its reach to all European member countries. These activities aligns well with the activities of HLRS in the European HPC infrastructure project DEISA (Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Appli- tions) and in the European HPC support project HPC-Europa. Beyond that, HLRS and its partners in the GCS have agreed on a common strategy for the installation of the next generation of leading edge HPC hardware over the next ?ve years. The University of Stuttgart and the University of Karlsruhe have furth- more agreed to bundle their competences and resources.

Book excerpt: All numerical simulations have some inherent error associated with the results but minimizing the error may also maximize the processing time of the simulation. The particle collision model used for this paper is Monte Carlo Collisions. The results of the simulations were compared to a vacuum tank experiment conducted at the Air Force Research Laboratory. The results were compared for simulations with and without collisions using different neutral densities and levels of complexity for particle collisions. The effect of particle collisions is evident in the results of the simulations. Increasing the neutral density of the simulation does not have a major impact on the results in the plume region. Outside the plume region the particle collisions can affect the results by an order of magnitude or greater.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this report is an investigation of the plasma flow on a Teflon Pulsed Plasma Thruster (PPT), and the resulting plume. The long range goal is a theoretical model of the flow, both between and beyond the thruster electrodes, that could aid in the improvement of performance, and also predict the contamination potential of the device. The overall model required consists of an internal portion interfaced with an external portion at the exit plane of the electrodes. Most of this report deals with the internal portion of the model. Specifically, the physics of the discharge and plasma acceleration between the electrodes are discussed, and a mathematical model is developed which appears to be consistant with the available experimental data. The investigation shows the necessity of certain additional information without which the model cannot be properly exercised. The validity of certain assumptions of magnetohydrodynamic theory is demonstrated for the nontypical plasma produced by the PPT, and logical consequences of the assumptions are considered vis a vis recently obtained electromagnetic data. A major difficulty in the modeling of the internal flow is the selection of the proper boundary conditions to be applied to the solution domain. These include conditions at the electrodes, the insulator, the ablating Teflon surfaces, and the interface with the vacuum ahead of, and behind, the plasma blobs. Keywords include: Pulsed plasma; Plume modeling; Teflon pulsed plasma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to accurately assess the backflow contamination potential of electric propulsion thrusters for spacecraft thruster integration purposes, models of the plumes and backflow are necessary. Both axisymmetric and fully three dimensional models of the plume and backflow contamination from ion thruster plumes are presented. Components included are primary beam ions, neutral propellant efflux thermal propellant ions created mainly by charge-exchange (CEX) collisions between primary beam ions and neutral propellant, non-propellant efflux (NPB) sputtered from thruster components, and neutralizing electrons. The plasma hybrid particle in cell (PlC) technique is applied to both propellant CEX ions and NPE ions produced in the beam and their transport out of the beam to the regions surrounding a model spacecraft. Simulations are performed for both single and dual thruster operation. Results of plume properties and backflow are compared with data and good agreement is found. Scaling relationships for the backflow are. determined, and the levels of NPE deposition are shown to be less than previously thought. In addition, the backflow form multiple thruster operation is found to be non- linear. Electric Propulsion, Ion Thrusters, Spacecraft Contamination.

Book excerpt: Plasma Engineering is the first textbook that addresses plasma engineering in the aerospace, nanotechnology, and bioengineering fields from a unified standpoint. It covers the fundamentals of plasma physics at a level suitable for an upper level undergraduate or graduate student, and applies the unique properties of plasmas (ionized gases) to improve processes and performance over a wide variety of areas such as materials processing, spacecraft propulsion, and nanofabrication. The book starts by reviewing plasma particle collisions, waves, and instabilities, and proceeds to diagnostic tools, such as planar, spherical, and emissive probes, and the electrostatic analyzer, interferometric technique, and plasma spectroscopy. The physics of different types of electrical discharges are considered, including the classical Townsend mechanism of gas electrical breakdown and the Paschen law. Basic approaches and theoretical methodologies for plasma modeling are described, based on the fluid description of plasma solving numerically magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations and the kinetic model particle techniques that take into account kinetic interactions among particles and electromagnetic fields. Readers are then introduced to the widest variety of applications in any text on the market, including space propulsion applications and application of low-temperature plasmas in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The latest original results on cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) applications in medicine are presented. The book includes a large number of worked examples, end of chapter exercises, and historical perspectives. There is also an accompanying plasma simulation software covering the Particle in Cell (PIC) approach, available at http://www.particleincell.com/blog/2011/particle-in-cell-example/. This book is appropriate for grad level courses in Plasma Engineering/Plasma Physics in departments of Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Physics. It will also be useful as an introduction to plasma engineering and its applications for early career researchers and practicing engineers. - The first textbook that addresses plasma engineering in the aerospace, nanotechnology, and bioengineering fields from a unified standpoint - Includes a large number of worked examples, end of chapter exercises, and historical perspectives - Accompanying plasma simulation software covering the Particle in Cell (PIC) approach, available at http://www.particleincell.com/blog/2011/particle-in-cell-example/

This book was released on 2017 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The plasma plume produced by a liquid pulsed plasma thruster is investigated using a Langmuir triple probe and a nude Faraday probe. The Langmuir triple probe failed to produce results which are suspected caused by the presence of ionic liquid in the plume resulting in shorting of the probe. The nude Faraday probe is able to record the ion current density which revealed a high level of inconsistency in the plasma plume. Ion current density recorded by the nude Faraday probe had a relative standard deviation of upwards of 100% of the mean value. Controlling the amount of propellant used during each pulse was extremely difficult. Investigating the plasma plume with more complex probes was not done due to the inconsistency measured by the nude Faraday probe and the expulsion of ionic liquid from the thruster which is highly corrosive to metals. Examining the historical thrust test data performed by the Missouri Satellite Research Team, a revised model with new assumptions was created and resulted in an improvement in accuracy to within 4.5%. The cold gas propulsion system developed over the years had undergone testing which resulted in measured thrust half of what was predicted. Developing a thrust prediction scheme that incorporates the effects of the solenoid control valve decreases the error to between 1-3% depending on temperature considerations. This thrust prediction scheme can be applied to the current design for the NanoSat 8 competition and results in an accurate prediction of thrust"--Abstract, page iii.
