Book excerpt: The advent of the chamber process for the manufacture of sulfuric acid brought to the field of commercial inorganic chemistry what was probably the first large-scale application of the phenomenon of catalysis. In the field of organic chemistry it had been employed for thousands of years in the manufacture of intoxicating beverages, but it was not until the time of Berzelius that it was recognized as a distinct influence upon the speed of chemical reactions and was given its present name.

Book excerpt: Handbook on Manufacture of Acetophenone, Alcohols, Alletrhin, Anthracene, Barium Potassium Chromate Pigment, Calcium Cyanamide, Carboxymethylcellulose, Carotene, Chlorophyll, Chemicals from Acetaldehyde, Fats, Milk, Oranges, Wood, Manufacture of Dye Intermediates and Dyes, Fine Chemicals, Formaldehyde, Granulated Fertilizers, Granulated Triple Superphosphate and Hydroquinone (Also Known As Modern Technology of Industrial Chemicals) Industrial chemicals are essential components of modern societies because they contribute in numerous ways to establish and/or preserve an elevated standard of living in countries at all stages of development. Chemicals play an important part in different fields such as healthcare, food production and telecommunications. Under certain conditions, the large scale production and use of certain chemicals may result in the degradation of our environment and adverse impact to human health and wildlife. Acetophenone is the simplest aromatic ketone organic compound and it has a sweet taste and smell that resembles that of oranges. It is used for various purposes in the industry. Acetophenone is a colorless liquid with a sweet pungent taste. Alcohols are one of the most important molecules in organic chemistry. They can be prepared from many different types of compounds, and they can be converted into many different types of compounds. The allethrins are a pair of related synthetic compounds used in insecticides. They are synthetic pyrethroids, a synthetic form of a chemical found naturally in the chrysanthemum flower. Acetaldehyde is a key raw material in the production of a wide range of chemical products such as paint binders in alkyd paints and as a plasticizer for plastics. Acetaldehyde is also used a base in the manufacture of acetic acid, another platform chemical with many applications. Acetaldehyde is also used as an aromatic agent and is found naturally in fruits and fruit juices. Formaldehyde, also known as methanal, is a colorless and flammable gas that has a pungent smell and is soluble in water. Formaldehyde is used in Circuit Board Manufacture, Laboratory Chemicals, Paper Coatings, Photochemicals, Printed Circuit Board Manufacturing and Rubber Manufacture. Hydroquinone is a Melanin Synthesis Inhibitor. Hydroquinone is mainly used in photosensitive materials, rubber, dyes, pharmaceutical industry. The Indian chemical industry is an integral component of Indian economy, contributing around 6.7 per cent of the Indian GDP. With Asia’s growing contribution to the global chemical industry, India emerges as one of the focus destinations for chemical companies worldwide. This book will be a mile stone for its readers who are new to this sector, will also find useful for professionals, entrepreneurs, those studying and researching in this important area. Book excerpt: Air Pollution Calculations: Quantifying Pollutant Formation, Transport, Transformation, Fate and Risks, Second Edition enhances the systems science aspects of air pollution, including transformation reactions in soil, water, sediment and biota that contribute to air pollution. This second edition will be an update based on research and actions taken since 2019 that affect air pollution calculations, including new control technologies, emissions measurement, and air quality modeling. Recent court cases, regulatory decisions, and advances in technology are discussed and, where necessary, calculations have been revised to reflect these updates. Sections discuss pollutant characterization, pollutant transformation, and environmental partitioning. Air partitioning, physical transport of air pollutants, air pollution biogeochemistry, and thermal reactions are also thoroughly explored. The author then carefully examines air pollution risk calculations, control technologies and dispersion models. The text wraps with discussions of economics and project management, reliability and failure, and air pollution decision-making. Provides real-life current cases as examples of quantitation of emerging air pollution problems Includes straightforward derivation of equations, giving practitioners and instructors a direct link between first principles of science and applications of technologies Presents example calculations that make scientific theory real for the student and practitioner

Book excerpt: Point Sources of Pollution: Local Effects and their Control is a component of Encyclopedia of Environmental and Ecological Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Point sources of pollution are the major causes of degradation of ecosystems, and may have significant effects on human health if they are not properly controlled. They can be classified in terms of sources, the discharged media, and the pollutants themselves. Broadly speaking, the sources include municipal and industrial sector activities, and the media include water, air, and solids. Noise is also an important form of pollution. Pollutant compositions from point sources can be vast, varied, and complex, and can vary between different countries and regions. The Theme discusses matters of great relevance to our world such as: Vehicular Emissions; Industrial Pollution; Domestic Pollution; Environmental Pollutants and Their Control; Technologies for Air Pollution Control; and Technologies for Water Pollution Control. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentials of Environmental Engineering is designed for use in an introductory university undergrad course. This book introduces environmental engineering as a profession applying science and math theories to describe and explore the relationship between environmental science and environmental engineering. Environmental engineers work to sustain human existence by balancing human needs from impacts on the environment with the natural state of the environment. In the face of global pollution, diminishing natural resources, increased population growth (especially in disadvantaged countries), geopolitical warfare, global climate change (cyclical and/or human-caused), and other environmental problems, it is clear that we live in a world that is undergoing rapid ecological transformation. Because of these rapid changes, the role of environmental engineering has become increasingly prominent. Moreover, advances in technology have created a broad array of modern environmental issues. To mitigate these issues, we must capitalize on environmental protection and remediation opportunities presented by technology. Essentials of Environmental Engineering addresses these very issues. It was written with the student in mind. Complex topics are explained in an easy-to understand format and style. Numerous examples are given and chapter review questions along with solutions are provided in the text.
