Book excerpt: The current study aims at analyzing parental involvement barriers in kindergarten (KG) activities from the perception of school administration and teachers in AI-Ain Kindergartens. It identified, examined and analyzed the school administration and teacher perceptions on barriers that hinder parental involvement in kindergarten activities. A special focus had been paid to obstacles that prevent parents from participating in kindergarten activities based on four categories that included factors related to regulations, administration, teachers and parents. This study used a survey questionnaire to gain its data targeting a sample population of 329 respondents that includes all the teachers and administrators of Al Ain KG schools. Responses were analyzed using a five point Likert scale that ranged from strongly agree (5) to strongly disagree (1). Results were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Major of the research findings related to barriers indicated four barriers the first, barrier related to regulations category, which includes missing of social worker, interpreters for the English Medium Teachers (EMT's), and the lack of coordination between meetings in different stages of schools. The second barrier related to administration that includes lack of providing training and assistance programs for parents and lack of communication in terms of informing parents about the parents-teacher meetings or events. The third barrier related to teacher is the feedback as there is teachers have provided no clear feedback to parents concerning their children's performance and cultural gap. The fourth barrier related to the parent themselves which includes, lack of transportation shortage of knowledge, time constrains related to working parents, personal responsibilities, language barriers deficit communication and divorced parents. As a result, it is recommended that using modem technology to communicate with parents, providing them with continuous feedback to meet their satisfaction levels, engaging them in the KG activities and responsibilities, providing transportation, and allocating a day for fathers to participate, attracting elderly parents to participate in school and teach children about heritage, culture, traditional terms, and habit and behavior could help in overcoming barriers to parental involvement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to analyze parent, teacher, and administrator perceptions on the transition to kindergarten activities at three elementary schools in a large, suburban school district in Pennsylvania. This research examined results and analyzed for trends based on the responses of 78 parent surveys, 21 parent follow up focus group participants, 9 teacher surveys, 7 follow up teacher focus group participants, 3 administrator surveys, and 3 follow up administrator interviews. The 3 surveys were very similar and each contained a Likert-scale response tool which listed a variety of transition activities along with open-ended questions. The follow up focus groups and interviews included open ended questions regarding transition to kindergarten at each of the schools and provided additional insight into participants' perception. Analysis of the data indicated that parents were pleased with their children's transition into kindergarten despite one key linkage, preschool to elementary school, not being strong. The findings also identified that negative parent perceptions were broad and varied and could be categorized as their desiring improved communication and the addressing of safety concerns. Teachers' perceptions, however, were less varied than parents and typically included the desire to dialogue with preschool personnel and to be compensated for transition work that would be best done in the summer. Administrators' perceptions mirrored the specific needs of their individual schools and depended upon their own definition of school readiness. All three participant groups expressed an interest in having teachers, students, and parents interact in a meaningful manner shortly before the start of school after class lists have been disseminated.

The subjects of this study were 60 of the 66 students enrolled in the pilot kindergarten program. Six of the student's parents failed to give permission to participate in the study. Answers were sought to the following questions: 1. Is there a significant difference in the mean scores in reading of students who have no parental involvement, little parental involvement, substantial parent involvement and complete parent involvement in the child's school activities? ; 2. If there is a significant difference, which practice will result in the greatest student achievement in reading? A one way analysis of variance was used to measure the differences in reading achievement, if any, that occurred between students who had no parent involvement, those with little parent involvement, those with substantial parent involvement and those with total parent involvement in school activities.

The purpose of this qualitative research descriptive case study was to determine how kindergarten transition and screening assessments are used to help serve children's academic needs as they enter kindergarten. This study examined the importance of kindergarten readiness and how the kindergarten transition process prepares children for kindergarten. This research study explored the value of, and uses for, pre-kindergarten screening assessments. This research is important to parents, teachers, administrators, pre-school providers and policy-makers as it informs the benefits and challenges of providing a quality pre-school experience for all four-year-old children as preparation to more formal schooling. This research study answered the following questions: 1) How do parents use information from kindergarten transition activities and screening assessments to help prepare their children for kindergarten? 2) What transition activities do teachers believe are most beneficial in preparing children for kindergarten? 3) How is information from kindergarten screening exams used to help children attain academic success in kindergarten? 4) What challenges do parents, teachers, and administrators overcome in order to help children prepare for kindergarten? This qualitative research descriptive case study highlights the need for kindergarten readiness. The study demonstrates how activities designed to increase kindergarten readiness help children become more successful in the academic setting. This study focuses on the question of what factors influence kindergarten readiness. This research gives teachers and administrators ideas for interventions for students who experience difficulty with academic material upon entering school. This research provides information on how to interpret the results of kindergarten screening assessments. This study provides educators and parents many different best practices for applying the knowledge gained from kindergarten screening assessments at home and in the classroom. The findings from this qualitative research study demonstrate that parents, teachers and administrators value the variety of transition activities offered to their children. The results suggest that transition events and the screening assessment help children become prepared for the academic, social, and emotional demands of kindergarten. The findings demonstrate the need to provide quality opportunities for transition of children entering school for the first time.
