Dicho espacio emerge, a modo de Isla, de entre dos extensas planicies (Hoya de Guadix-Baza y los llanos del Marquesado), y junto con la sierra de los Filabres (Almería) conforman una misma unidad. Ambas sierras integran un único macizo encuadrado dentro de las Cordilleras Béticas. En la Sierra de Baza encontramos un variado muestrario de ecosistemas que albergan un rico patrimonio de especies animales y vegetales. Por otra parte, en virtud de su riqueza de recursos (agricultura caza ganadería minería...) y de su posición privilegiada en la zona de confluencia de tres pasillos que unen el altiplano granadino con el litoral murciano y almeriense (pasillo de Chirivel ,pasillo del valle del Andarax y pasillo de Fiñana), estas tierras han estado pobladas de del Paleolítico y aquí se han sucedido distintas civilizaciones, entre ellas las del pueblo íbero de los Bastetanos (pueblo que dio origen a la ciudad de Baza).Teniendo en cuenta todo esto, la presente guía, a través de sus 30 rutas, pretende poner en valor el valioso patrimonio etnográfico presente en el parque, sus numerosas muestras de arqueología industrial relacionadas con su tradición minera, sus interesantes ecosistemas (florísticos y faunísticos) y la belleza paisajística que nos sorprenden desde diversos rincones de este espacio protegido. Si además de ellos visitamos los pueblos del parque y su entorno, y nos acercamos a su valioso legado arquitectónico (religioso, civil y enológico), arqueológico y gastronómico, tendremos alicientes más que sobrados para que la experiencia sea inolvidable.
