The early life of all men is private; it is as children, generally, that their cha racters are formed to good or evil and those who form them to good, their truest and chief benefactors, are unknown to the world. It has been remarked, that some of the most eminent Christians have been blessed with religious mothers, and have in after life referred their own graces to the instrumentality of their teaching. Augustine has preserved to the Church the history of his mother Monica; but in the case of others, even the name is denied to us of our great benefactress, whoso ever she was, and sometimes, doubtless, the circumstance of her service altogether. Y I suppose that a large portion of the hearers of the Gospel pay some attention to this duty. That morning or evening, or both, finds them repeating a form of prayer, and that on some occasions this form may be somewhat enlarged. Still I apprehend, my friends, that the great duty of prayer is most deplorably neglected, - that it is reluctantly commenced, and joyfully concluded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fresh Views of Old Truths: Church Sermons T is undeniable that there is often a wearisome sameness about Sermons which has afforded sad occasion for the contempt only too readily expressed for them by an irreligious world. The Author hopes and believes that he has at the least avoided this fault. The repelling element of constantly recurring religious common-places, and the stock phrases which are meant to cover, but never really conceal from the intelligent, poverty or confusion of thought, will not be found in these Sermons. Very early in the days of the world they became a just cause of complaint. Even by the godly Job they were found intolerable: and he signified his impatience of them in the plainest language. How forcible (says be) are right words. But what doth your arguing reprove? I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all! Shall vain words have an end? I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you. But I would strengthen you with my mouth. The conventional terms too, so appropriate to systematic theology, are but very sparingly introduced; the Author considering them out of place in Parochial Sermons, as inconsistent with the simplicity of the Gospel, and irrelevant to the plain teachings that the Preacher should be setting himself to gather in a practical form from the passage before him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parochial and Plain Sermons, Vol. 5 of 8 True faith does not covet comforts. It only com plains when it is forbidden to kneel, when it reclines upon cushions, is protected by curtains. And eucom passed by warmth. Its only hardship is to be him dered, or to be ridiculed, when it would place itself as a sinner before its Judge. They who realize that awful Day' when they shall see Him face to face, whose eyes are as a flame of fire, will as little bargain to pray pleasantly now, as they will think of doing so then. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunday Afternoons at the Parish Church of an University City A voice, often heard in our church, was that of John Knox, the greatest and most energetic of Scotch R'eformers. It is said, on doubtful authority, that from listening toa sermon he preached in it, a multitude hastened over the short Space between and wrecked the cathedral. Probably what Knox wished was that the grand building should be cleared of images and other things of specially Roman cha racter: but when you set in motion a furious mob. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Churches: A Course of Epiphany Sermons It cannot, I think, he foreign to the spirit of this season, that we should ask ourselves the question: After what manner has Christ been manifested to men during the more than eighteen centuries that have gone by since His ascension into heaven? The answer is, of course: Not now by such mir acles as were wrought during His life on earth, for these seem to have ceased with the Apostolic age, but through the agencies oper ated by His holy Church. The Church of Christ, then, and her manifestations of her Lord and Saviour, will furnish us with topics eminently befitting this season of the Chris tian year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons Preached in the Parish Church of St. Andrew, Clifton The wisdom of the prudent, says Solomon, is to understand his way.1 And surely our wisdom, if we have common prudence, is to try to ascertain for ourselves what our true state is in God's sight, whether we are in the right path or not, and if we have reason to hope, (a hope, of course, mixed with much fear in the best of us), that by God's grace we are so, to seek diligently and enquire how we may best be preserved in that way. Christian pru dence, or wisdom, the subject on which I am going to make a few remarks, is the art of carrying on the work of salvation with the least risk; of so judging and arranging things and events as to make them all look and tend the right way; of allowing no occasions of good to slip by us without turning them to good; of neglecting no assistance or means of success which God may graciously place within our reach. Now all this necessarily implies a great deal of care and watchfulness on our part. But how few are there who will devote this necessary atten tion to the work! How true that saying of our Lord's, respecting the comparative wisdom of the children of this world and the children of light! Let your own consciences tell you, (and it will tell the same tale, it is to be feared, to very many), how much more circumspect and prudent and forecasting you have been, and probably at present are, about the affairs of the world and your advancement and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Saints Sermons The sermons contained in this volume are the sermons of one whose life was passed in the constant contemplation of the invisible. His relation to God and to the objects of faith was a greater and more constraining reality to him than his relation to that visible world in which for the moment he lived. He seemed instinctively to see what to others is so often a matter of dim and uncertain perception, with the result that his teaching exhibits in a very remarkable degree that simplicity and directness and that clear intuition of the things of God which is so marked a feature of Mr. Keble's Parochial Sermons.
