Download or read book La Mamma written by Penelope Morris and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of the “mamma italiana” is one of the most widespread and recognizable stereotypes in perceptions of Italian national character both within and beyond Italy. This figure makes frequent appearances in jokes and other forms of popular culture, but it has also been seen as shaping the lived experience of modern-day Italians of both sexes, as well as influencing perceptions of Italy in the wider world. This interdisciplinary collection examines the invented tradition of mammismo but also contextualizes it by discussing other, often contrasting, ways in which the role of mothers, and the mother-son relationship, have been understood and represented in culture and society over the last century and a half, both in Italy and in its diaspora.

Book Synopsis Sustainable development in urban transportation and cultural heritage by : Guglielmo Corduas
Download or read book Sustainable development in urban transportation and cultural heritage written by Guglielmo Corduas and published by Edizioni Nuova Cultura. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to ensure their immediate survival, humans accept any sacrifice at the expense of their surrounding ecosystem. Sustainability is the key to build and harmony between our development and the consumption of our planet’s limited resources. Mindful of their past mistakes, developed countries should try and lead underdeveloped areas to a sustainable growth, finding compromises, making sacrifices and not exporting their worst practices, like speculating on the desperate need for survival of others, but their best ones instead. Such responsibility would be facilitated by a change coming from the bottom, a change in the aspirations of individuals and communities. The city, a urban ecosystem, is indeed the starting point of such changes. By interpreting these general targets, this paper aims at practically achievable actions that individuals can carry on in the urban environment, with a basic support by local authorities, to improve the socio-economic livability of their communities, considering ecological balance, well-being and technological progress. Turkey is a very interesting country, a growing economy and a melting pot of Western and Islamic culture. With a special look on this land, the actions that we’ve focused on concern: a. Sustainable mobility - introducing an approach to improve mobility in cities like Istanbul, as well as a model of sustainable mobility for the whole country. b. Cultural heritage, economic development and value creation – improving Turkish enormous cultural heritage through management renewal and the adoption of advanced technologies such as 3D. These two fields, are very much interlaced when considering urban development and sustainability. One stimulates territorial identification, the other allows to reach it. The global crisis we are witnessing today is not just a matter of ecology; it has to do with our lifestyles, the way we developed and how we manage our resources. The opportunity to rediscuss the principles of growth can be used to counter the enduring international economic crisis through the rediscovery of those values concerning the sustainable quality of life we need to aim at for our future development.

This book was released on 2008-05-29 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To built intelligent systems that can cope with real world problems we need to - velop computational mechanisms able to deal with very large amounts of data, gen- ate complex plans, schedules, and resource allocation strategies, re-plan their actions in real time, provide user friendly communication for human-device interactions, and perform complex optimization problems. In each of these tasks intelligence techno- gies play an important role, providing designers and creators with effective and adequate computational models. The field of intelligence technologies covers a variety of computational approaches that are often suggested and inspired by biological systems, exhibiting functional richness and flexibility of their natural behavior. This class of technologies consists of such important approaches as data mining algorithms, neural networks, genetic al- rithms, fuzzy and multi-valued logics, rough sets, agent-oriented computation, often integrated into complex hybrid solutions. Intelligence technologies are used to built machines that can act and think like living systems, solve problems in an autonomous way, develop rich private knowledge bases and produce results not foreseen and programmed in a direct way by designers and creators.

Book Synopsis Double-Edged Comforts by : Silvia Bottinelli
Download or read book Double-Edged Comforts written by Silvia Bottinelli and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peeking into the home through the eyes of artists and image-makers, this book unveils the untold story of Italian domestic experiences from the 1940s to the 1970s. Torn between the trauma of World War II and the frenzied optimism of the postwar decades, and haunted by the echoes of fascism, the domestic realm embodied contrasting and often contradictory meanings: care and violence, oppression and emotional fulfillment, nourishment and privation. Silvia Bottinelli casts a fresh light on domestic experiences that are easily overlooked and taken for granted, finding new expressions of home - as an idea, an emotion, a space, and a set of habits - in a variety of cultural and artistic movements, including new realism, visual poetry, pop art, arte povera, and radical architecture, among others. Double-Edged Comforts finds nuance by viewing artistic interpretations of domestic life in dialogue with contemporaneous visual culture: the advertisements, commercials, illustrations, and popular magazines that influenced and informed art, even materially, and often triggered the critical reactions of artists. Bottinelli pays particular attention to women's perspectives, discussing artworks that have fallen through the cracks of established art historical narratives and giving specific consideration to women artists: Carla Accardi, Marisa Merz, Maria Lai, Ketty La Rocca, Lucia Marcucci, and others who were often marginalized by the Italian art system in this period. From sleeping and bathing, chores, and making and eating food to the arrival of television, Double-Edged Comforts provides a fresh account of modern domesticity relevant to anyone interested in understanding how we make sense of the places we live and what we do there, showing how art complicates the familiar comforts and meanings of home.
Book Synopsis Female Cultural Production in Modern Italy by : Sharon Hecker
Download or read book Female Cultural Production in Modern Italy written by Sharon Hecker and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-13 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first critical interdisciplinary examination in English of Italian women’s contributions to intellectual, artistic, and cultural production in modern Italy. Examining commonalities and diversities from the country’s Unification to today, the volume provides insight into the challenges that Italian women engaged in cultural production have faced, and the strategies they have deployed in order to achieve their objectives. The essays address a range of issues, from women’s self-identification and public ownership of their professional roles as laborers in the intellectual and cultural realm, to questions about motherhood and financial remuneration, to the role of creative foreign women in Italy. Through critical analysis and direct testimony from new and typically marginalized voices, including an Arab-Italian writer, an Italian-Dominican filmmaker, and a transgender activist, new forms of ongoing struggle emerge that redefine the culturally diverse landscape of female intellectual and creative production in Italy today. The volume rethinks a solely national “Made in Italy” reading of the subject of female intellectual labor, demonstrating instead the wide network of influences and relationships that have existed for Italian women in their professional aspirations.
