"Don't cry baby, I wasn't trying to make you cry or no sh** like that but I do keep it real with you at all times. Hell,as fu**ed up as it is...I'm completely honest with you and lied to Jazzlyn." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the earliest memorials used by Native Americans to the elaborate structures of the present day, Richard Veit and Mark Nonestied use grave markers to take an off-beat look at New Jersey’s history that is both fascinating and unique. New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones presents a culturally diverse account of New Jersey’s historic burial places from High Point to Cape May and from the banks of the Delaware to the ocean-washed Shore, to explain what cemeteries tell us about people and the communities in which they lived. The evidence ranges from somber seventeenth-century decorations such as hourglasses and skulls that denoted the brevity of colonial life, to modern times where memorials, such as a life-size granite Mercedes Benz, reflect the materialism of the new millennium. Also considered are contemporary novelties such as pet cemeteries and what they reveal about today’s culture. To tell their story the authors visited more than 1,000 burial grounds and interviewed numerous monument dealers and cemetarians. This richly illustrated book is essential reading for history buffs and indeed anyone who has ever wandered inquisitively through their local cemeteries.

Book excerpt: What goes on in human beings when they make or listen to music? What is it about music, what gives it such peculiar power over us, power delectable and beneficent for the most part, but also capable of uncontrollable and sometimes destructive force? Music has no concepts, it lacks images; it has no power of representation, it has no relation to the world. And yet it is evident in all of us–we tap our feet, we keep time, hum, sing, conduct music, mirror the melodic contours and feelings of what we hear in our movements and expressions. In this book, Oliver Sacks explores the power music wields over us–a power that sometimes we control and at other times don’t. He explores, in his inimitable fashion, how it can provide access to otherwise unreachable emotional states, how it can revivify neurological avenues that have been frozen, evoke memories of earlier, lost events or states or bring those with neurological disorders back to a time when the world was much richer. This is a book that explores, like no other, the myriad dimensions of our experience of and with music.

Driven to understand the hard realities of the landscape he loves, Cantú joins the Border Patrol. He and his partners learn to track other humans under blistering sun and through frigid nights. They haul in the dead and deliver to detention those they find alive. Plagued by a growing awareness of his complicity in a dehumanizing enterprise, he abandons the Patrol for civilian life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the third book of the North Omaha History Series, Adam Fletcher Sasse reveals a lot of the hidden, denied and neglected history of one of the oldest areas of Nebraska's largest city. Highlighting the predominantly African American community and other ethnic groups, he introduces some intriguing characters and important businesses that made North Omaha great. He reveals the role of transportation in the area by examining the history of several streets, including the culture and figures in the areas around them. He details the roles of North Omaha's extensive boulevard system that weaves together neighborhoods and connects the community to the rest of the city, as well as looks at the historic Belt Line Railway that used to encircle the area. In the next section, Fletcher Sasse conducts a community-wide exploration of architecture in North Omaha. He reveals the basics about the neighborhood, and then plunges deep into the apartments, homes, neighborhoods and other institutions that make the historic preservation movement so important to the community. He details several important districts and shines a light on the oldest houses in North Omaha, too. Then, he tells the missing history of a dozen mansions and estates that once occupied the area. The final section of the book is a massive timeline of birthdates for the many of the most important people in North Omaha history, including athletes, entertainers, politicians, leaders and others. The book finishes with a bibliography and comprehensive index.

Book excerpt: "Tigers, Tumbleweeds, and Trauma" is a light-hearted retelling of some of the many adventures, accidents, mishaps and near-misses that shaped the life of a young Frank, our self-described hapless hero. While feral, free-ranging children of the sixties had less anxiety and fewer societal pressures than do today's crop of kids, life was not without its challenges. It is these challenges that the author chronicles in the many tales found in this book. From the Wilds of Wells Gray Provincial Park to the sixties suburbia of Kamloops (with side journeys as far as Alaska) these stories should keep you laughing from start to finish!

Book excerpt: In July 2019 Elizabeth Withstandley took a 10 day journey on a cargo ship across the Atlantic from Newark, New Jersey to Liverpool, England and then onto Ireland. The project stems from the work "In Search of the Miraculous" by the Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader from 44 years prior. He left in a small boat called Ocean Wave in July 1975 from Cape Cod, Massachusetts intending to land in Falmouth, England. In April 1976 his boat was found capsized off the Southeast coast of Ireland.Searching for the Miraculous (Part 2 : The Journey) is a limited edition artist book based on a 10 day journey across the Atlantic Ocean in July 2019. While the artist Elizabeth Withstandley was on the boat she worked with the musician Jordan Lee form the band Mutual Benefit who was on the other side of the Atlantic in Cushendall, Northern Ireland. They communicated their experiences daily through email, creating a connected journey that served as the basis for the project. This artist book provides insight into the process of creating the final work. The book shows the chronology of the days using excerpts of our daily communication along with images providing some visual insight to the work. There are 21 illustrations, a photograph and a video still in this 52 page book which consists of maps and images that relate to each day. The book is a 5"x 7" softcover that is signed and numbered. There are 100 books in the edition.

This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Officer, White Navy is likely the first memoir of a Black naval officer who rose from high school dropout to unrestricted line officer in the post-Vietnam War era. The author's unique career path and insightful analysis of both his personal experiences and those of others in the military give a clear picture of what was happening both within and outside the Navy, and how the forces of discrimination and institutional denial and damage control efforts can make a career in the military fraught with obstacles, as well as opportunities, for a well-qualified minority of any gender, race, or ethnic origin. Recent events and the impact of the commander in chief's statements and actions, which have a direct impact on the thinking and behavior of persons in uniform, make this a timely addition to any military member's library. It is full of potential case study material for any military instructional or group facilitation activity, as well as providing an historical overview of what it was like to be a minority sailor or officer between 1975 and the mid-1990's. Any sailor in uniform, regardless of pay grade or commissioned status, can both benefit and learn lessons from this work. Families can use this work to prepare their own loved ones or to help them try to understand the often lingering consequences of their loved one's military service.
