Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining daring aerial photography with the restricted airspace over Paris provides both breathtaking and unparalleled views. From sunrise to sunset, Paris is one of the most photographed cities in the world. Shooting with the newest high-resolution medium-format professional cameras while leaning out of helicopters making steep turns with the door off, Milstein captures the highly detailed, iconic, straight-down images that set his work apart. Milstein's distinctive style--straight down--leads to fresh insights of the urban design of this great city. In a way that is impossible from street level, you can see the old neighborhoods of Montmartre and Montparnasse; iconic historical monuments like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe or the Invalides; and modern Paris like La Défense or the new neighborhoods around the Bibliothèque Nationale. As a bonus, there is a portfolio of images of the gardens and buildings of Louis XIV's great palace, Versailles. Milstein brings his unique and unmatched aerial vistas of Paris to life--every angle, every moment, every season. This is sure to be treasured by tourists and Parisians alike.
Download or read book L.A. River written by Michael Kolster and published by George F Thompson Publishing. This book was released on 2019-04-19 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lynne Buchanan began photographing Florida's inland waters to create artistic records of her connection with those waters and to learn lessons from being in the present moment and aligning with the flow of life. The more time she spent photographing waterways in her native Florida, the more she noticed what was being damaged and lost due to human impact. She resolved to draw attention to the situation through her photography and to work with water-quality and environmental advocates, from members of the Waterkeeper Alliance to Native American citizens fighting to preserve the integrity of their ancestral lands and drinking water. The result is Florida's Changing Waters, which not only showcases the beauty, diversity, and complexity of Florida's waters, but also documents the negative effects of agricultural and industrial pollution, a growing population with its urban growth and land development, and climate change on Florida's inland and coastal waters and springs. Though her work is place specific, the book reveals the interconnected and global nature of environmental problems. Indeed, Florida's fragile springs, wetlands, rivers, and coastal waters can be considered a tragic and powerful example of what is happening to aquatic systems elsewhere in the nation and world as a result of unchecked human action. Buchanan's photographs invite viewers to consider their personal relationship to water and encourage better stewardship of this vital--and finite--resource. They are also a call to action to find more effective ways to preserve these waterways for both their natural beauty and essential role in our survival.
Book Synopsis Paris Changing by : Christopher Rauschenberg
Download or read book Paris Changing written by Christopher Rauschenberg and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2007-10-04 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1888 and 1927 Eugne Atget meticulously photographed Paris and its environs, capturing in thousands of photographs the city's parks, streets, and buildings as well as its diverse inhabitants. His images preserved the vanishing architecture of the ancien rgime as Paris grew into a modern capital and established Atget as one of the twentieth century's greatest and most revered photographers. Christopher Rauschenberg spent a year in the late '90s revisiting and rephotographing many of Atget's same locations. Paris Changing features seventy-four pairs of images beautifully reproduced in duotone. By meticulously replicating the emotional as well as aesthetic qualities of Atget's images, Rauschenberg vividly captures both the changes the city has undergone and its enduring beauty. His work is both an homage to his predecessor and an artistic study of Paris in its own right. Each site is indicated on a map of the city, inviting readers to follow in the steps of Atget and Rauschenberg themselves. Essays by Clark Worswick and Alison Nordstrom give insight into Atget's life and situate Rauschenberg's work in the context of other rephotography projects. The book concludes with an epilogue by Rosamond Bernier as well as a portfolioof other images of contemporary Paris by Rauschenberg. If a trip to the city of lights is not in your immediate future, this luscious portrait of Paris then and now is definitely the next best thing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 19th century, Paris underwent profound transformations above and below ground, from the city center to its outskirts. Georges Eugène Haussmann, Prefect of the Seine from 1853 to 1870, embodies this entire century of public works that continue to shape the city?s organization and identity. Paris Haussmann explores and analyzes the characteristics of this homogenous yet polymorphous cityscape, the result of a lengthy process of changes and evolutions, even in recent times. Research was conducted at all levels to classify and compare roadways, identify public spaces, and organize the blocks and buildings according to their current geometry. For the first time, the qualities of the Haussmann model have been set forth to show how they grapple with the challenges that contemporary cities face.0Rich illustrative material, photographs, various plans and maps, floor plans and sections, axonometric projections, diagrams and other graphics, and statistical analyzes complement topical essays. The book is published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Pavillon de l?Arsenal in Paris in spring 2017.00Exhibition: Pavillon de l'Arsenal, Paris, France (31.01. - 07.05.2017).

Book Synopsis Carousels of Paris by : Kaye Wilkinson Barley
Download or read book Carousels of Paris written by Kaye Wilkinson Barley and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A charming collection of color photographs and historical information about many of the carousels in Paris. Carousels are said to be a French invention brought about by the accidental death of King Henri II during a jousting tournament in 1559. Renaissance knights stopped jousting, and the games evolved into spearing rings with their lances. The idea of mounting wooden horses on a rotating frame dates to the 17th century. To entertain thousands of people during an event at Versailles, the Sun King, Louis XIV, King of France from 1643 until his death in 1715, had his engineers design the first rotating merry-go-round, a four-seater with gilded chairs for ladies and horses or swans for the men. By the end of the 18th century, there were merry-go-rounds in several of the Parisian public gardens. In the wake of the French Revolution, the merry-go-round, like other sorts of entertainment previously enjoyed by aristocrats, became more easily accessible to workers and their families.
