Download or read book Barricades written by J. Harsin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-07-18 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1830 and 1848, Paris was rocked by two successful revolutions, three failed insurrections, and seven serious assassination attempts against King Louis-Phillippe and his sons. The June Days of 1848 - the worst urban insurrection in history until that time - finally brought this period to a close. Using a wide variety of sources, including detailed court records and hundreds of depositions of witnesses and suspects, Jill Harsin examines revolutionary republicanism during the violent underground movement of the July Monarchy, and describes these events in vivid detail. The lives of 'ordinary men' are captured in their own words as Harsin illuminates the political aspirations of the working class. Harsin's original writing style and compelling discussions shed new light on the particular turbulence of this era, a period of disruption that stemmed from the contemporary working class codes of masculinity and honour.

Book Synopsis The 1830 Revolution in France by : P. Pilbeam
Download or read book The 1830 Revolution in France written by P. Pilbeam and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-07-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the nature and scope of the 1830 French revolution. Recent developments in the study of history and in the world have done much to overturn established ideas, both of marxists who believed all revolutions led to socialism, and of liberals who feared violence, but who assumed democracy would triumph. Wedged between the revolutions of 1789 and 1848, the author asks was 1830 a minor bourgeois Parisian event? Although politically avoidable, Dr Pilbeam demonstrates that socially it was part of a long-running struggle of peasants and artisans to preserve their way of life.
Book Synopsis French Revolution of 1830 by : David H. Pinkney
Download or read book French Revolution of 1830 written by David H. Pinkney and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this absorbing narrative of the fall of the last Bourbon Monarch, David H. Pinkney resconstructs events in France during the seventeen critical months between August 1829 and December 1830. Beginning with the formation of the Polignac ministry, he traces the development of the conflict betweeen the crown and its opponents, showing how the protest against Charles X's Four Ordinances was turned into revolution by the intervention of the Parisian crowd. Motviated by resentement of the Bourbons, economic distress, and vaguely conceived ideals of the earlier Revolution, the people emerged as a political power again and expelled the royal forces from Paris. The fall of Charles X was followed by a power struggle that ended with the investitutre of Louis-Philippe, king by contract with the Chamber of Deputies. The author examines problems of interest to all students of revolution. What drove teh leaders to revolutionary action? Who were the members of the crowd? What were their motives? What were the effects of revolution on the composition of the ruling elite and on Paris? David H. Pinkney is Professor of History at the University of Washington, and the author of Napoleon III and the Rebuilding of Paris (Princeton). Originally published in 1972. Book Synopsis France 1814 - 1914 by : Robert Tombs
Download or read book France 1814 - 1914 written by Robert Tombs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an incomparably rich portrait of France in the years when the disparate elements that made up the fragmented kingdom of the ancien regime were forged into the modern nation. The survey begins with an exploration of national obsessions and attitudes. It considers the tendency to revolution and war, the preoccupation with the idea of a New Order and the deep strain of national paranoia that was to be intensified by the dramatic debacle of the Franco-Prussian War. Robert Tombs then investigates the structures of power and in Part Three he turns his attention to social identities, from the individual and family to the nation at large. When every aspect of the period has been put under the microscope, Robert Tombs draws them all into the broad political narrative that brings the book to its rousing conclusion. Bursting with life as well as learning, this is, quite simply, a tour de force.
Book Synopsis Paris Between Empires by : Philip Mansel
Download or read book Paris Between Empires written by Philip Mansel and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paris between 1814 and 1852 was the capital of Europe, a city of power and pleasure, a magnet for people of all nationalities that exerted an influence far beyond the reaches of France. Paris was the stage where the great conflicts of the age, between nationalism and cosmopolitanism, revolution and royalism, socialism and capitalism, atheism and Catholicism, were fought out before the audience of Europe. As Prince Metternich said: When Paris sneezes, Europe catches cold. Not since imperial Rome has one city so dominated European life. Paris Between Empires tells the story of this golden age, from the entry of the allies into Paris on March 31, 1814, after the defeat of Napoleon I, to the proclamation of his nephew Louis-Napoleon, as Napoleon III in the Hôtel de Ville on December 2, 1852. During those years, Paris, the seat of a new parliamentary government, was a truly cosmopolitan capital, home to Rossini, Heine, and Princess Lieven, as well as Berlioz, Chateaubriand, and Madame Recamier. Its salons were crowded with artisans and aristocrats from across Europe, attracted by the freedom from the political, social, and sexual restrictions that they endured at home. This was a time, too, of political turbulence and dynastic intrigue, of violence on the streets, and women manipulating men and events from their salons. In describing it Philip Mansel draws on the unpublished letters and diaries of some of the city's leading figures and of the foreigners who flocked there, among them Lady Holland, two British ambassadors, Lords Stuart de Rothesay and Normanby, and Charles de Flahaut, lover of Napoleon's step-daughter Queen Hortense. This fascinating book shows that the European ideal was as alive in the nineteenth century as it is today.

Book Synopsis Caricature and French Political Culture 1830-1848 by : David S. Kerr
Download or read book Caricature and French Political Culture 1830-1848 written by David S. Kerr and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2000-09-07 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Philipon (1800-1862) was the founder of the satirical illustrated press in France. With the newspapers he owned and directed, La Caricature and Le Charivari, he led an unprecedentedly coherent and vitriolic campaign of disrespect against King Louis-Philippe and his regime. Using a group of young caricaturists (the most talented of whom were Daumier, Grandville, and Travies) and the collaboration of a gifted team of writers (including Balzac) he crafted a new language of opposition. This book is the first full scholarly study of the structure of the illustrated press in the 1830s, its contribution to political debate in France, the dissemination of caricature and its potential as political propaganda, and the links between caricature and other forms of political-cultural discourse under the July Monarchy.

Book Synopsis Art in an Age of Counterrevolution, 1815-1848 by : Albert Boime
Download or read book Art in an Age of Counterrevolution, 1815-1848 written by Albert Boime and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2004-08-18 with total page 771 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art for art's sake. Art created in pursuit of personal expression. In Art in an Age of Counterrevolution, Albert Boime rejects these popular modern notions and suggests that history—not internal drive or expressive urge—as the dynamic force that shapes art. This volume focuses on the astonishing range of art forms currently understood to fall within the broad category of Romanticism. Drawing on visual media and popular imagery of the time, this generously illustrated work examines the art of Romanticism as a reaction to the social and political events surrounding it. Boime reinterprets canonical works by such politicized artists as Goya, Delacroix, Géricault, Friedrich, and Turner, framing their work not by personality but by its sociohistorical context. Boime's capacious approach and scope allows him to incorporate a wide range of perspectives into his analysis of Romantic art, including Marxism, social history, gender identity, ecology, structuralism, and psychoanalytic theory, a reach that parallels the work of contemporary cultural historians and theorists such as Edward Said, Pierre Bourdieu, Eric Hobsbawm, Frederic Jameson, and T. J. Clark. Boime ultimately establishes that art serves the interests and aspirations of the cultural bourgeoisie. In grounding his arguments on their work and its scope and influence, he elucidates how all artists are inextricably linked to history. This book will be used widely in art history courses and exert enormous influence on cultural studies as well.
Book Synopsis Lafayette in Two Worlds by : Lloyd S. Kramer
Download or read book Lafayette in Two Worlds written by Lloyd S. Kramer and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lloyd Kramer offers a new interpretation of the cultural and political significance of the career of the Marquis de Lafayette, which spanned the American Revolution, the French Revolutions of 1789 and 1830, and the Polish Uprising of 1830-31. Moving beyond traditional biography, Kramer traces the wide-ranging influence of Lafayette's public and personal life, including his contributions to the emergence of nationalist ideologies in Europe and America, his extensive connections with liberal political theorists, and his close friendships with prominent writers, many of them women. Kramer places Lafayette on the cusp of the two worlds of America and France, politics and literature, the Enlightenment and the Romantic movement, public affairs and private life, revolution and nationalism, and men and women. He argues that Lafayette's experiences reveal how public figures can symbolize the aspirations of a society as a whole, and he stresses Lafayette's important role in a cultural network of contemporaries that included Germaine de Stael, Benjamin Constant, Frances Wright, James Fenimore Cooper, and Alexis de Tocqueville. Book Synopsis The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham, Volume 13 by : Chris Riley
Download or read book The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham, Volume 13 written by Chris Riley and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2024-04-11 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham, Volume 13 contains authoritative and fully annotated texts of all known and publishable letters sent both to and from Bentham between 1 July 1828 and his death on 6 June 1832. In addition to 474 letters, the volume contains three memorandums concerning Bentham’s health shortly before this death, his Last Will and Testament, and extracts from both the Autobiography and the manuscript diaries of Bentham’s nephew George. Of the letters that have already been published, most are drawn from the edition of The Works of Jeremy Bentham, prepared under the superintendence of Bentham’s literary executor John Bowring. A small number of letters have been reproduced from newspapers and periodicals. This volume publishes for the first time all the extant correspondence between Bentham and Daniel O’Connell, the Irish Liberator. Other new acquaintances included Charles Sinclair Cullen, barrister and law reformer, and John Tyrrell, the Real Property Commissioner. Throughout the period, Bentham maintained regular contact with old friends and connections, but he also entered into sporadic correspondence with such leading figures in government as the Duke of Wellington, Robert Peel and Henry Brougham. Further afield, Bentham corresponded, amongst others, with the Marquis de La Fayette in France, Edward Livingston in the United States of America and José Del Valle in Guatemala.
