The broken heart of Troy sent up that day A groan, which even now is in my ears. I heard it on the mountains, and I wept, Although I knew not what great cause I had. Melissa. I was a child then. But I wonder much What was the wailing that to-day we heard Down by the city gates. These many hours They have been closed, and the plain empty; yet When we passed by this morning, how we saw The battle run like breakers in a bay, Tossing with plumes and lances! Pyrgo. Come away. The pathway will be dark under the trees. Melissa. Pyrgo, is Priam dead, or Agamemnon? Or is it fair Prince Paris? What hath happened? Pyrgo. Hush, lest none hear you, and her eye Look askance on you; she has power to change The bloom upon your cheek, and wither up The udders of our sheep and waste our flocks. Melissa. She has no power to lure her Paris back. Pyrgo. Yet she can charm the almost dead to life. When Meladon was bitten by the viper Two summers past, and all his flesh was cold And pale as mushrooms, she found certain leaves About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thou wert silent so long, and hadst such a far-away look in thine eyes, that I wondered where thy fancy might be roving. Paris. Where else could it be, but among yonder pile of glimmering palaces. Ah, oenone, a mighty yearning seems to draw me thither; in my every dream it appears and, like a Siren, beckons sweetly promising. I fear I cannot content myself much longer here; for, full of hope and youthful vigor, I fain would breast the larger currents of life. Oenone. 0 Speak no more, paris, speak no more. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paris the Beautiful Paris is neither mediaeval nor modern; it refuses to be assigned to any definite chronol ogy; it is unique, and there is a suggestion of a vast realm of life that is aglow with wonderful possibilities. Infinite trains of thought are inspired: one realizes that he is in the centre of art, of scientific activity and discovery, and that he treads on the very threshold of sur prises that may, any morning, quite transform the course of progress. There is a curious sense of satisfaction with one's environment, as being that which contains and offers everything, and stimulates the purposes of life in myriad dirce tions. The French capital is a paradise of beauty it is also a paradise of opportunity. The spirit experiences a sense of liberation from barriers and obstacles inseparable from all other cities or localities; a sense of being set free to observe. Book excerpt: This volume offers the first in-depth investigation of Thomas Heywood’s engagement with the classics. Its introduction and twelve essays trace how the classics shaped Heywood’s work in a variety of genres across a writing career of over forty years, ranging from drama, epic and epyllion, to translations, compendia and the design of a warship for Charles I. Close readings demonstrate the influence of a capaciously conceived classical tradition that included continental editions and translations of Latin and Greek texts, early modern mythographies and the medieval tradition of Troy. They attend to Heywood’s thought-provoking imitations and juxtapositions of these sources, his use of myth to interrogate gender and heroism, and his turn to antiquity to celebrate and defamiliarise the theatrical or political present. Heywood’s better-known works are discussed alongside critically neglected ones, making the collection valuable for undergraduates and researchers alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imperial Paris: Including New Scenes for Old Visitors Some of the papers contained in this book have already appeared in Household Words; but there are many which are now published for the first time. Two or three of these original chapters, form part of a work I had once projected, on the Poor of Paris, but which other avocations compelled me to abandon. They may, however, stimulate some inquirer who has the leisure to finish a task that could not fail to interest the English public. Chifi'ons and Cliifi'oniers; the Four Seasons in Prose; the French Waiter' s Story; Departed this Life in Paris; street-note and Paris under the Bees, are original chapters, in which the reader will find, if I am not mistaken, views of Parisian activity with which no book has yet made him acquainted. In the paper entitled The English Painted by the French, I have woven into one narrative, a series of quotations from various French writers, who have written recently on En g land. It presents, at a glance, a series of whimsical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. No charge is laid upon me to teach the French nation its duties, to reprove it for its follies. Nor yet is it my design to hold up Paris of the Parisians as an example of naughtiness, nor even of virtue, to English readers. A student of human life still in my humanities, my purpose is purely interpretative. I would endeavour to trans late into English some Paris scenes, in such a way as to give a true impression of the movement, personages, sounds, colours, and atmosphere per vaded With joy of living which belongs to them. These impressions Which I have myself received, and now desire to communicate, are not the result of a general survey of Paris taken from some lofty summit. I have not looked down upon the capital of F rance from the top of the Eiffel Tower; nor yet from the terrace of the Sacre Coeur; nor yet from the balcony among the chimeres of Notre. The first time I remained here four months, thoroughly dissatisfied with myself, and glad to make my escape, but now that I return somewhat older and more mature and settled, I see the fault lay in myself, for woe to him who comes to Paris too young, and without any fixed aim in View, his head filled with vague notions and his pockets empty! Now I see Paris calmly - in com pany with a dear friend, Whose presence aids me in feeling more freshly and vividly all my impressions of the former visit. Here are those of the first day as they can be rendered by a weary brain and a pen borrowed from the landlord. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paris as Seen and Described by Famous Writers In the following pages I have endeavoured to apply the general plan of my former books on art and architecture. In this volume, however, it was not advisable, even if possible, to confine myself to the picturesque and artistic features of the subject. I have tried to produce a work that will fulfill the purposes of an artistic guide-book. I have selected most of the important buildings and monuments of Paris and have chosen the most interesting descriptions that I could find by various authors, English and French, who love and admire the objects of which they write. In making these selections I have tried to include as many varieties of treatment as possible, and, therefore, there will be found the views of the professional art-critic, the casual literary voyageur, the native litterateur, and the social moralist. The views of Theodore de Banville, Victor Hugo, Prosper Merimee, Louis Blanc, Louis Enault, Arsene Houssaye, and Philip Gilbert Hamerton present us with fine contrasts and side-lights; and by gathering these together, I hope to give a picture of Paris which will be, in a measure, complete. Travelers protesting against the rules and regulations, to which they submitted all the same. Christophe was in France. After having satisfied the curiosity of the customs, he took his seat again in the train for Paris. Night was over the fields that were soaked with the rain. The hard lights of the stations accentuated the sadness of the interminable plain buried in darkness. The trains, more and more numerous, that passed, rent the air with their shrieking whistles, which broke upon the torpor of the sleeping passengers. The train was nearing Paris. Christophe was ready to get out an hour before they ran in; he had jammed his hat down on his head; he had buttoned his coat up to his neck for fear of the robbers, with whom he had been told Paris was infested; twenty times he had got up and sat down; twenty times he had moved his bag from the rack to the seat, from the seat to the rack, to the exasperation of his fellow-passengers, against whom he knocked every time with his usual clumsiness. Just as they were about to run into the station the train suddenly stopped in the darkness. Christophe flattened his nose against the window and tried vainly to look out. He turned towards his fellow-travelers, hoping to find a friendly glance which would encourage him to ask where they were. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Paris: Its Court and Literary Salons Long years of Italian warfare, though most disas trous to France, enriched the royal library with valu able mss., and the palaces with many treasures of art, the spoil of the wars and Francis I. And some few of his nobles imbibed in Italy a taste for the ehefs-d'a'avre of sculpture, painting, and architecture. Several of its most renowned artists were prevailed on to visit the French court, but none Could be tempted to stay there though so great, we are told, was the veneration of Francis for learning and the arts, that when any distinguished savants, sculptors, or painters were presented to him, he graciously made a point of advancing three steps to greet them.
