It is also a legal requirement for Title 1 schools. Numerous studies have examined the effects of parent involvement with various ethnic groups, especially with African American and Hispanic groups. This study looks at the effects of a series of twelve parental involvement workshops of three hours each, presented in English, Hmong, Spanish, and Russian languages on the perceptions of parents. These parents were from four ethnic groups: African American, Hispanic, Hmong and Russian-Ukrainian. Through a pre-post survey design, this study examines the perceptions of parents on school to home communication, parental involvement in their children's academic work, and the parents' ability to help their children academically. Also examined are teachers' perceptions of various dimensions of parental involvement using a survey with dimensions which are complementary to those on the parent survey.

But in a potentially constructive development, researchers have found that parental involvement is linked to positive attitudes toward education, behavioral performance, and better academic achievement to support the success of a child’s learning in the classroom. Although the research on parental involvement is abundant in the literature, there may be too little attention paid to the perception of teachers toward parental involvement. The purpose of this quantitative study is to analyze the perceptions of teachers based on parental involvement activities guided by Epstein’s Six Typologies of Parental Involvement: (a) teacher perceptions of parents and barriers to parental involvement, (b) communication, (c) teacher expectations for parental involvement programs; (d) building parent/teacher partnerships; and (e) resolutions and resources to improve parental involvement in schools. A 20 item close-ended questionnaire revealed how teachers' perceptions influence parental involvement in middle and high schools. The results of the study add to the validity of Epstein’s’ Six Typologies of parental involvement indicating that parental involvement initiatives and programs need to be more purposeful when it comes to communication and parent/teacher partnerships. By creating awareness in schools and school programs, parents and teachers can further build upon strong relationships that lead to a declared cohesive partnership to further increase student participation at home and in school; ultimately enhancing parental involvement as a significant component in a child’s education.

Thirty-six teachers from two southeastern school districts in Pennsylvania participated in an online survey containing 20 Likert-scale and four open-ended questions. Five teachers also volunteered to participate in the interview process. The first research question examined middle school teachers' perceptions of behaviors of highly engaged parents. Participants associated highly engaged parents with traditional forms of parent engagement. They included communicating with the school, providing appropriate levels of parenting, participating in the school, and supporting their child at home. Participants did not identify non-traditional forms of parent engagement, such as involvement in the decision-making process and community collaboration. as behaviors associated with highlv engaged parents. The second research question identified middle school teachers' perceptions of effective strategies to improve levels of parent engagement. Participants believed that they had the ability to influence a parent's level of engagement. They also noted that professional development in targeted areas could assist in their ability to improve parent engagement. Identified areas for training included relationship building, implicit bias, community resources, and equity. Lastly, participants also believed that parents should have a limited role in the decision-making process. They indicated that parents can be involved in committees and groups, but the final decision-making should be left to the school.

In this qualitative study, the researcher took an in-depth exploration of a school's parental involvement program and processes (Creswell, 2003). The perspectives and experiences described by the principal/researcher, parents, and teachers participating in the parental involvement effort at the case study school adds to emerging research on effective and meaningful parental involvement. Narratives of the experiences, descriptions, and thoughts of what worked and what did not work at this school will provide insight and suggestions for other schools in strengthening parental involvement initiatives and add to the understanding of parental involvement processes. This autoethnographic research study provides a deeper understanding of parental involvement through an in-depth examination into the thoughts and feelings of the principal/researcher and school community members, particularly parents and teachers. Three parents and three teachers were purposefully selected from the case study school, located in a high poverty urban school set in the southeast region of the United States of America. Interview participants were selected based on their involvement in parental involvement efforts at the case school, their availability for interview, and their ability to provide detailed and rich narrative about the parental involvement efforts. In addition, participants were intentionally selected to allow multiple voices, perspectives, and opinions to be presented. The interview discussions were guided by a generated list of topics. Transcripts were analyzed, categorized, and summarized into common themes. Results of the research from this case-study has uncovered the following traits. For effective parental involvement to be present in schools, this research suggests parents must: be Positive about their child's education, be Active in their child's education, Value the importance of education, and Encourage student growth. Additional findings show in order for parents to reach their full potential in regards to parental involvement, the schools must be: Promoters of parental involvement, Accessible to parents, supportive of parents by providing Technical assistance, and Hopeful about the process of parental involvement and the potential of student growth. In essence, the research revealed that parents should "P.A.V.E. the Way" and schools should "Clear the P.A.T.H."

Book excerpt: Parent engagement in student learning has been associated with improved student attitudes (Zygmunt-Fillwalk, 2006), better school attendance (Zygmunt-Fillwalk, 2006), and higher student achievement (Henderson, Mapp, Johnson, & Davies, 2007). Research has also shown that many barriers exist for effective parent engagement activities in rural school settings, including communication (Halsey, 2005), life contexts (Eidahl, 2013), and school environments (Englund, Luckner, Whaley, & Egeland, 2004). Understanding the differences in perceptions of effective parent engagement activities will identify a comprehensive understanding of what types of parent engagement opportunities promote a collaborative and supportive relationship between home and school. Currently, there is a gap in research studies in rural school settings that examine parent engagement activities. This qualitative research study examined the differences in perceptions of effective parent engagement activities between disparate groups of parents, school administrators, and teachers. Data for this study was collected through surveys, program evaluations, interviews, and focus groups. Analyses of the data identified similarities and differences in the characteristics of effective parent engagement activities as perceived by school administrators, teachers, and parents. Five key findings that were identified include: (a) smallness of a rural school district is seen as a strength and challenge for effective parent engagement activities, (b) developing personal connections within a rural community, (c) opening lines of communication, (d) developing parent-to-parent relationships and (e) gaining the perspective from inactive parents. These findings and recommendations can be used to develop school programs that better support parent involvement in educational programs and to strengthen the community and education of students.
