When schools, families, and communities collaborate and share responsibility for students′ education, more students succeed in school. Based on 30 years of research and fieldwork, the fourth edition of the bestseller School, Family, and Community Partnerships: Your Handbook for Action, presents tools and guidelines to help develop more effective and more equitable programs of family and community engagement. Written by a team of well-known experts, it provides a theory and framework of six types of involvement for action; up-to-date research on school, family, and community collaboration; and new materials for professional development and on-going technical assistance. Readers also will find: Examples of best practices on the six types of involvement from preschools, and elementary, middle, and high schools Checklists, templates, and evaluations to plan goal-linked partnership programs and assess progress CD-ROM with slides and notes for two presentations: A new awareness session to orient colleagues on the major components of a research-based partnership program, and a full One-Day Team Training Workshop to prepare school teams to develop their partnership programs. As a foundational text, this handbook demonstrates a proven approach to implement and sustain inclusive, goal-linked programs of partnership. It shows how a good partnership program is an essential component of good school organization and school improvement for student success. This book will help every district and all schools strengthen and continually improve their programs of family and community engagement.

Book excerpt: Mathematical knowledge is vitally important to young children's development, as research demonstrates that it is a strong predictor of their later academic achievement (Duncan et al., 2007). Developing these skills early in life is crucial, as it allows children the opportunity to develop the necessary foundational skills for early schooling instruction. As parents typically serve as the primary instructors for preschool-aged children, outside of child care or preschool programs, researchers must examine the role of parents in their children's emergent math skills in order to provide the best education to these young children. Parental attitudes toward a particular subject have been demonstrated to affect the amount of time they dedicate to teaching their children said subject (e.g., Missall et al., 2015). This thesis sought to examine if parental attitudes towards mathematics could be improved by the use of an adaptive number eBook. The use of technology has been demonstrated to aid young children's ability to learn literacy and math skills (e.g., Shamir, 2009), and the present thesis sought to test the role that parents may play in this context. The eBook provided an electronic space for children to learn math skills using adaptive features, meaning the stimuli increased or decreased in complexity based on children's prior performance. The study examined the effects of the adaptive qualities of the eBook on parental attitudes towards mathematics, and also explored if parents' perceptions of their child's global and specific math skills in numerical comparison increased after reading the number eBooks. Overall, significant differences between eBook types were found for parental perceptions of children's numerical comparison skills, but results indicated no significant differences for parental attitudes toward mathematics or parental perceptions of children's global math skills. Effect sizes indicated that use of the adaptive eBook may have positively impacted parental attitudes in a small way, and may have positively impacted parent perception of children's specific math skills on a large scale. These findings, their implications, and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not 4th grade students participating in a series of Family Math Nights had significantly higher achievement scores as well as student and parent attitudes about mathematics when compared to students at the same school who did not participate in the Family Math Nights. In order to gauge the effectiveness ofthe Family Math Nights the following items were analyzed: student achievement will be evaluated by analyzing data using a pretest and posttest of the 4th grade mathematics curriculum given to control and experimental groups; student and parent attitudes about mathematics will be analyzed using a Likert scale survey both at the beginning and conclusion of each Family Math Night. The surveys will be analyzed to see if the Family Math Nights have an impact on student and parent attitudes toward mathematics. Overall, this study provides quantitative information about the effect Family Math can have on students in one elementary school classroom. There is not sufficient evidence to support the positive effect Family Math had on student achievement in mathematics. Yet, for this study when student attitudes were analyzed, survey scores indicated that attending a series of Family Math Nights improved student attitudes towards mathematics. Book excerpt: Children should begin to learn foundational mathematical concepts at a developmentally appropriate level at home when they are young, just as they learn the building blocks of reading when involved in daily activities. Parents of young children should understand the importance of introducing these concepts to their children in fun, natural ways so they do not miss the opportunity to facilitate the building of a strong mathematical foundation in their children. In addition to understanding the importance of math-related experiences parents provide their young children, it is essential to understand how parents' attitudes towards math may inadvertently predispose their children to think negatively about math, potentially impacting the children's attitude towards math throughout their school career. As young children are influenced by both affective and tangible experiences with parents in their homes, the purpose of this study was to explore the possible influence of parental attitudes about math and the math-related experiences they provide on the attitudes towards math of their non first born, first-grade private school children. This qualitative case study used individual interviews of the parents, specifically the mothers, and their first-grade private school children and an observation of the mothers and children baking cookies together to gather data which were then analyzed using a five step process to answer the research questions: Is there a relationship between parents' attitudes about math and the attitudes about math of their first-grade children enrolled in private schools? and How do parents' actions influence the attitudes about math of their first-grade children enrolled in private schools? Study findings indicate that there is a positive relationship between the children's attitude towards math and what they perceive their mother's attitude towards math to be. However, there was no evidence that using math in their everyday lives led to a positive attitude towards math in the children primarily because study participants were unaware of the foundational math concepts embedded in their daily activities. Recommendations include teaching parents about basic foundational math concepts and how they can be included in engaging real life activities and how making a purposeful connection between the activity and math concept(s) involved can bridge the home-school math experiences leading to a more cohesive math education.

The authors describe some of the challenges and offer ways to tackle them, such as reassessing the organization of grades K-12; specifically assisting the students most in need; finding ways to prevent disciplinary problems; and helping parents understand how they can help their children learn at home.

Book excerpt: The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of academic standards in mathematics and English language arts. The mathematics standards introduce students to many new strategies and expectations to which parents have never been exposed. Many parents have expressed concern and frustration about these standards because they are unable to help their children with completing homework correctly. In addition to this, research has confirmed that parental involvement in education is positively associated with student achievement. Therefore, it is a worry if parents are unable to help their children with homework. The major aim of this study was to further investigate parents' attitudes towards mathematics, and more specifically towards the changes that the CCSS have created in 3rd & 4th grade mathematics. Additionally, this study could be beneficial in making future decisions about supporting parents and families. Parents of 3rd & 4th graders were interviewed and asked questions about their feelings towards mathematics, if they help with the mathematics homework, and if they are happy with the changes in mathematics. This information was then compared with their child's winter scores on the standardized district assessment called, Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). Although there was not a direct relationship between students' scores on the MAP assessment and the parents' responses, the information collected from the interviews was extremely valuable. Parents have noticed changes in the way students are being taught mathematics and those changes are making it difficult for parents to support their children with homework. The majority of parents are not happy with the changes and do not see the benefits to their children's mathematics skills. Interestingly, many would be interested in a type of mathematics training course for parents. This could lead to parents feeling more supported by the school, and in turn, being able to support their children with homework.

Book excerpt: A significant amount of research has been conducted concerning the relevence of homework in a student's academic life. However, previous literature has not exte nsifly adressed the relationship between parental attitudes towards homework and child academic achievement. This study aims to investigated the relationship be tween parental attitudes towards homework and students' academic achievement (En glish, math, and science) in the upper elementary level. Two hundred twenty two parents of upper elementary students from St. Joseph's School, Cornet Chahwan, in Lebanon took part in this study responding to the survey about their attitude s towards homework. Results show that there is a positive significant relations hip between parental attitude towards homework and children's academic achieveme nt in English, math, and science.
