Book Synopsis Procedure Manual for the Diagnosis of Intestinal Parasites by : Donald L. Price
Download or read book Procedure Manual for the Diagnosis of Intestinal Parasites written by Donald L. Price and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procedure Manual for the Diagnosis of Intestinal Parasites is the definitive resource for individuals involved in the collection, preparation, and examination of fecal specimens for microscopic diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infections. The book points out the stages of parasites possibly found in a fecal specimen, how to find them, and how to identify them. Specific details on how to effectively use the microscope for parasitic diagnosis are included. This information is missing from most texts and manuals of this kind. Photomicrographs and original drawings of the various stages and forms of parasites and eggs are used extensively throughout the text, with the photomicrographs printed to a standard scale for easy comparison. More than 400 illustrations in all are included. Biological keys for intestinal amoebae and eggs of various species of helminths are provided. This book is an essential reference for teachers of diagnostic parasitology and their students, physicians who order fecal examinations for intestinal parasites, nurses or health workers who handle or prepare the specimens for the laboratory, and technologists who receive, process, and examine the specimens.
Book Synopsis Bench Aids for the Diagnosis of Intestinal Parasites by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Bench Aids for the Diagnosis of Intestinal Parasites written by World Health Organization and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of nine A-4 color plates with 118 photomicrographs illustrating the appearance and diagnostic features of all the common intestinal helminths and protozoan parasites known to infect humans. Produced in a robust plasticized format, the plates can be used as either a guide for laboratory and field workers in endemic countries, or a teaching aid for students and trainees. The aim is to help the microscopist ascertain the presence of parasites in feces, whether they be minute protozoan cysts or large helminth eggs, and to identify them correctly. With this goal in mind, the bench aids include pertinent laboratory instructions as well as high-quality images. The photomicrographs illustrate diagnostic features of each of the parasites as they appear in different preparations and at different magnifications. Each photomicrograph is produced with a measuring bar and accompanied by a short explanatory legend, which draws attention to distinctive features that help confirm diagnosis. Helminth eggs are illustrated in the first 36 photomicrographs, which show the diagnostic stages of the most common helminthes, including nematodes, cestodes, schistosomes, and other trematodes. The remaining photomicrographs offer advice on the more difficult task of detecting and identifying intestinal protozoan trophozoites and cysts. Relevant laboratory techniques are described on the reverse side of the plates. Additional laboratory aids include dichotomous keys for the identification of amoebic trophozoites trophozoites of intestinal flagellates, and cysts of amoebae and flagellates.

Download or read book The Pathogenic Enteric Protozoa: written by Charles R. Sterling and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giardia duodenalis (=G. lamblia), Entamoeba histolytica, Cryptosporidium parvum and Cyclospora cayetanensis are more than just a mouthful for most who might encounter them. These protozoan parasitic agents contribute significantly to the staggering caseload of diarrheal disease morbidity encountered in developing world nations. Compounding the issue of their mere presence is the fact that standard ova and parasite exams frequently do not detect these infections. Detectable stages may be shed intermittently or require specialized staining procedures. Added to this is the often large number of asymptomatic carriers who serve as reservoirs for infecting others. These parasites are also not strangers to more developed nations, having responsibility for both small and large-scale disease outbreaks. In such settings they may be even more difficult to detect simply because they are frequently overlooked in the grand scheme of disease causing possibilities. They share common features; all are Protozoa, all possess trophic stages that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract, all have the ability to produce disease and in some instances death, and all produce environmentally stable cysts or oocysts, which ensure their transmissibility. In other ways, these organisms are profoundly different. Giardia is a flagellate that inhabits the gut lumen in close association with enterocytes. Entamoeba is an amoeba that preferentially inhabits the mucosal region of the gut lumen, but which may, under certain circumstances, become invasive. Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora are obligate intracellular coccidians, each taking up a unique niche within their respective host enterocytes.
Book Synopsis Sanitation, Latrines and Intestinal Parasites in Past Populations by : Piers D. Mitchell
Download or read book Sanitation, Latrines and Intestinal Parasites in Past Populations written by Piers D. Mitchell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanitation and intestinal health is something we often take for granted today. However, people living in many regions of the developing world still suffer with debilitating diseases due to the lack of sanitation. Despite its clear impact upon health in modern times, sanitation in past populations is a topic that has received surprisingly little attention. This book brings together key experts from around the world to explore fascinating aspects of life in the past relevant to sanitation, and how that affected our ancestors. By its end readers will realize that toilets were in use in ancient Mesopotamia even before the invention of writing, and that flushing toilets with anatomic seats were a technology of ancient Greece at the time of the minotaur myth. They will see how sanitation compared in ancient Rome and medieval London, and will take a virtual walk around the sanitation of York at the time of the Vikings. Readers will also understand which intestinal parasites infected humans in different regions of the world over different time periods, what these parasites tell us about early human evolution, later population migrations, past diet, lifestyle, and the effects of sanitation technology. There is good evidence that over the millennia people in the past realized that sanitation mattered. They invented toilets, cleaner water supplies, drains, waste disposal and sanitation legislation. While past views on sanitation were very different to those of today, it is clear than many past societies took sanitation much more seriously than was previously thought.
