Book Synopsis English Translations from the Greek by : Finley Melville Kendall Foster
Download or read book English Translations from the Greek written by Finley Melville Kendall Foster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Translations From the Greek: A Bibliographical Survey A word, perhaps, is necessary in the way Of definition Of translation. In this list I have aimed to include only such works as profess to be English renderings of Greek writings. In some cases, chiefly before 1700, the English translation was made from a French, Italian, or Latin version Of the Greek original. SO far as possible, such instances have been noted. I have not included adaptations, paraphrases, and the like; nor have I attempted to record solitary translations Of excerpts from Greek literature. A book Of translations in the literal sense Of the word has been my basis for entering a title in the following list. The author would be the last one to claim infallibility for this list. One has but to attempt to gather together any considerable number Of titles on a given subject to come to a realization Of the difficulties Of the work. Here a little and there a little is a true text in any such under taking; and two translations in a bushel Of books is no rare occurrence. I have listed the facts as I have been able to gather them; but I dare not vouch that in all cases they are complete. I hope some Of the more elusive ones will be added at some future time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Translations From the Greek Anthology The following Translations, executed at intervals during the last twenty years, appeared from time to time in Kilmarnock or Glasgow journals. They were undertaken solely as a literary solace, and with no view to subsequent collection and republication. But during late years I have been asked so often, and by so many, to republish them that I at last reluctantly consented. However, I had got jaded, and I shrank from the labour of revision. But I did them at first as carefully as I could, and I am not sure that by revision I should have improved them. Still, if I did not think they had some merit, especially that of fidelity, no solicitation, however urgent, would have induced me to republish. Book Synopsis Analytic Islamic Philosophy by : Anthony Robert Booth
Download or read book Analytic Islamic Philosophy written by Anthony Robert Booth and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to Islamic Philosophy, beginning with its Medieval inception, right through to its more contemporary incarnations. Using the language and conceptual apparatus of contemporary Anglo-American ‘Analytic’ philosophy, this book represents a novel and creative attempt to rejuvenate Islamic Philosophy for a modern audience. It adopts a ‘rational reconstructive’ approach to the history of philosophy by affording maximum hermeneutical priority to the strongest possible interpretation of a philosopher’s arguments while also paying attention to the historical context in which they worked. The central canonical figures of Medieval Islamic Philosophy – al-Kindi, al-Farabi, Avicenna, al-Ghazali, Averroes – are presented chronologically along with an introduction to the central themes of Islamic theology and the Greek philosophical tradition they inherited. The book then briefly introduces what the author collectively refers to as the ‘Pre-Modern’ figures including Suhrawardi, Mulla Sadra, and Ibn Taymiyyah, and presents all of these thinkers, along with their Medieval predecessors, as forerunners to the more modern incarnation of Islamic Philosophy: Political Islam.
