Book excerpt: A concept of a cross-flow fan (CFF) embedded near the leading edge of an airfoil to actively control the boundary layer for lift and thrust enhancement has been proposed. The design places a cross-flow fan near the leading edge of an airfoil and flow is drawn in from the pressure side of the airfoil, energized and expelled out to the suction side near the leading edge. This CFF system simulates the active boundary layer control by blowing commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code ANSYS Fluent is employed to perform 2-D calculations based on various parameters of the CFF and compared the data with an experimental baseline case found in literature. The effect of number of blades, pressure side slat opening, suction side slat angle, hub-to-shroud ratio and blade pitch angle have on aerodynamic parameters have been investigated. Regression models are established using the acquired data to find combination of parameters for achieving higher circulation control. Unsteady sliding mesh method is used to carry out the numerical simulation. The fan geometry is developed and housed in a NACA 651-212 airfoil. The of the CFD work show that the jet leaving the fan replaces the boundary layer of the upstream flow with a flow of very high velocity. This high velocity flow causes a higher pressure difference between the suction and the pressure side generating higher lift in the process. The drag of the airfoil is overcame and a net thrust is observed by CFF blowing phenomenon.

Book excerpt: The cross-flow fan has an inherent ability to provide thrust to an airfoil as well as provide boundary layer control. The thrust can be easily vectored and usually the cross-flow fan is fully embedded within the airfoil, making its operation relatively safe. Those characteristics make it very favorable as a propulsive means for a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft. However, further design improvements are needed for competitive comparison with existing conventional aircraft propulsion methods. The baseline configuration was scaled from a 12-inch diameter, 30-bladed rotor developed by Vought Systems in the 1970s to a 6-inch rotor as a more realistic size for integration into a propulsive wing. Using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, ANSYS CFX, previous baseline configuration models were validated at full-speed range to verify the software's prediction. Then, a model with the cross-flow fan embedded at the trailing edge was built and different configurations were examined. An attempt was made to improve the performance of the cross-flow fan embedded airfoil by thrust and thrust-to-power ratio, and lift and drag forces were calculated. CFD results have shown that a rotor with fewer blades can improve performance and a 22-bladed rotor was selected and examined experimentally. Results were compared with the baseline 30-bladed rotor.

Book excerpt: "The main objective of this research was to investigate the lift and drag characteristics of a stepped airfoil with backward facing steps; apply active flow control technique to enhance the aerodynamic performance of stepped airfoils and examine the possibility of using such airfoils on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV's). A step was introduced at mid-chord, with a depth of 50% of the airfoil thickness at mid-chord position extending till the trailing edge of a NACA 4415 airfoil. Computational studies were conducted with the use of passive flow control constituting the activation of step and active flow control with the use of air injecting jets placed in the step cavity of the NACA 4415 airfoil with a goal of enhancing the aerodynamic performance. The jet angle and jet momentum coefficient were varied independently to identify the best setting for optimizing the aerodynamic performance of the stepped airfoil. Experimental studies of a scaled wing model with the same airfoil were conducted in a wind tunnel for a range of Reynolds numbers to validate some of the numerical results obtained for the cases of base and stepped airfoils. The results produced show that as much as 37% increase in C1 and as much as 12% increase in L/D ratios over conventional airfoil values could be obtained using stepped airfoils and further enhancement could be made with the employment of jets placed in the step cavities. The case study conducted as a part of this research focuses on the UAV RQ-2 Pioneer employing a stepped airfoil configuration by comparing its aerodynamic characteristics with the conventional NACA 4415 airfoil originally used on this aircraft. The primary objective of the case study was to identify and outline a step schedule for the flight envelope of the UAV Pioneer using a stepped airfoil configuration while applying active flow control to obtain enhanced aerodynamic performance over conventional NACA 4415 airfoil originally used and hence improve the flight performance characteristics like Range and Endurance of the aircraft"--Abstract, p. iii

Book excerpt: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has made remarkable progress in the last two decades and is becoming an important, if not inevitable, analytical tool for both fundamental and practical fluid dynamics research. The analysis of flow fields is important in the sense that it improves the researcher's understanding of the flow features. CFD analysis also indirectly helps the design of new aircraft and/or spacecraft. However, design methodologies are the real need for the development of aircraft or spacecraft. They directly contribute to the design process and can significantly shorten the design cycle. Although quite a few publications have been written on this subject, most of the methods proposed were not used in practice in the past due to an immature research level and restrictions due to the inadequate computing capabilities. With the progress of high-speed computers, the time has come for such methods to be used practically. There is strong evidence of a growing interest in the development and use of aerodynamic inverse design and optimization techniques. This is true, not only for aerospace industries, but also for any industries requiring fluid dynamic design. This clearly shows the matured engineering need for optimum aerodynamic shape design methodologies. Therefore, it seems timely to publish a book in which eminent researchers in this area can elaborate on their research efforts and discuss it in conjunction with other efforts.

Book excerpt: With the inspiration of owl's silent flight, a traditional airfoil S833 equipped with flexible fringes on the trailing edge is investigated through numerical simulation and experiments in a wind tunnel. The newly constructed airfoil is modeled and numerically investigated. An incompressible, 2D and viscous flow solver in the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software FLUENT is utilized to conduct the numerical simulation on the vortex flow feature in the wake of the airfoil. A User Defined Function code was applied to generate the defined motion of flexible fringes. The effects of the flapping frequency of the fringe and the deformation pattern of the fringe are investigated in the parametric study. On the other hand, the airfoil model with the flexible fringe is manufactured for the experimental study. A digital Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system is employed to investigate the flow structure in the wake and the deformation of the flexible fringes. The motion of the trailing edge fringes is extracted from the experimental measurements as the input for CFD simulation. It has been found that the addition of the flexible fringe has a significant effect on the flow characteristics in the vortex wake downstream of the airfoil as well as the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil.

Book excerpt: As part of an investigation of flows around and forces on an oscillating finite wing in subsonic compressible flow, the exact double integrals occurring in the theoretical formulation of the three-dimensional nonstationary aerodynamic forces have previously been reduced to single integrals over the range of either one of the two independent variables. The present report describes a method for solving the resultant three-dimensional problem based on a generalization of approximate methods for solving two-dimensional problems. It is shown that the calculation of three-dimensional corrections to the two-dimensional integral equation for spanwise variation of circulation, provided tabulated values for the kernal of the integral equation are available.

Book excerpt: "This lecture series is devoted to major aspects of aerofoil design both for aeronautical and turbomachine application. These include: (1) optimisation of target pressure and velocity distribution. Both direct optimisation resulting from an inverse boundary layer calculation and an iterative optimisation of the loses are presented. (2) aerofoil design by means of inverse methods. This ranges from simple parametric definitions of two- dimensional cross sections to a detailed numerical definition of three dimensional shapes. blade or airfoil designs are normally made in two steps, and the lectures are accordingly grouped into two parts. First, optimisation of target pressure and velocity distributions are discussed taking into account the required performance and the lost mechanisms in the boundary layer. Both direct optimisation resulting from an inverse boundary layer calculation, and an iterative optimisation by minimisation of the losses are presented. It is clear from both procedures that inclusion of off-design operation is one of the greatest difficulties involved in blade or airfoil operation. The second part gives an overview of the numerous inverse blade design methods that have been developed both for turbomachinery and aeronautical applications. This ranges from simple parameter definitions of two-dimensional cross-sections to the full three-dimensional definition of wings and blade channels."--DTIC.
