Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvey Penick's life in golf began when he started caddying at the Austin, (Texas), Country Club at age eight. Eighty-one years later he is still there, still dispensing wisdom to pros and beginners alike. His stature in the golf world is reflected in the remarkable array of champions he's worked with, both men and women, including U.S. Open champion and golf's leading money winner Tom Kite, Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, and LPGA Hall of Famers Mickey Wright, Betsy Rawls, and Kathy Whitworth. It is not for nothing that the Teacher of the Year Award given by the Golf Teachers Association is called the Harvey Penick Award. Now, after sixty years of keeping notes on the things he's seen and learned and on the golfing greats he's taught, Penick is finally letting his Little Red Book (named for the red notebook he's always kept) be seen by the golf world. His simple, direct, practical wisdom pares away all the hypertechnical jargon that's grown up around the golf swing, and lets all golfers, whatever their level, play their best. He avoids negative words; when Tom Kite asked him if he should "choke down" on the club for a particular shot, Harvey told him to "grip down" instead, to keep the word "choke" from entering his mind. He advises golfers to have dinner with people who are good putters; their confidence may rub off, and it's certainly better than listening to bad putters complain. And he shows why, if you've got a bad grip, the last thing you want is a good swing. Throughout, Penick's love of golf and, more importantly, his love of teaching shine through. He gets as much pleasure from watching a beginner get the ball in the air for the first time as he does when one of his students wins the U.S. Open. Harvey Penick's Little Red Book is an instant classic, a book to rank with Ben Hogan's Modern Fundamentals of Golf and Tommy Armour's How to Play Your Best Golf All the Time.

Book excerpt: Golf Proverbs is a book of spiritual metaphors about golf and life. Written by a brilliant businessman and the founder of MINT dentistry, Dr. Field Harrison combines his passion for the game of golf with his love for business, family, faith, and Jesus in short one-liner life lessons full of wisdom, wit, and inspiration. Jesus often spoke in parables to His followers. In fact, the Bible itself frequently uses allegories meant to touch the soul, while challenging the intellect. Golf Proverbs is full of wisdom, wit, and life lessons that Dr. Field Harrison has learned while building several businesses, becoming a husband and father, and learning to follow Jesus himself. While this book may speak to the mind about golf, it’s about so much more. As you read, meditate on the hidden meanings—not the obvious ones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born into a large family of six many years ago at a very young age when butter (If you could afford it) was wrapped in paper, margarine didn't exist, groceries came from the shop in bulk, wrapped by the shopkeeper in brown paper, butchers paper or tissue paper which were later cut into squares and placed on a nail in the outside dunny. Plastic supermarket bags were unheard of; in fact, supermarkets were unheard of. I can remember the sides of bacon hanging from a hook on the ceiling and the shopkeeper used a long stick with a hook on the end to get them down to cut the bacon off in a slicing machine. Clem was born before television, faxes, polio shots, penicillin, frozen foods, photocopiers, plastic, contact lenses, fibre optic cable and the pill. Before credit cards, split atoms, Radar, laser beams and ball point pens. Before dishwashers, pantyhose, clothes dryers, micro-wave ovens, electric blankets, air conditioners, play stations, Nintendo, x-boxes, no video at all and definitely no 100 channels on cable TV....and before man walked on the moon. We got married first and then we lived together. We made do with what we had and we were the last generation who were naive enough to think you needed a wife to have a baby. How quaint can you be? In our time, closets were for clothes, not coming out of. Bunnies were small rabbits, not big girls And lemons were pieces of fruit not dud cars. Designer Jeans were scheming girls named Jean and having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Fast food was what you ate during Lent. And outer space was the back of the outdoor dunny. Before Day-care Centres, group therapy and suntan parlours. Well before we heard of FM radio, Tape decks, VCR's, electronic typewriters, Heart transplants, word processors, personal computers, mobile phones, yoghurt and guys wearing earrings. Time-sharing meant togetherness. We always had plenty of friends. We went out side and found them. We played cricket, football, chases and some time it really hurt. We fell out of trees, fell over, got cut, broke bones, chipped teeth and best of all there were no lawsuits from any of our accidents simply because it was our own stupid fault and nobody was to blame but us. A chip was a piece of wood. Hardware meant hammers and nails and software wasn't even a word. Grass was mown, coke was a cold drink and pot was something you cooked in. Rock music was a grandma's lullaby and aids were helpers in the headmaster’s office. Way back in those early days we were lucky to survive. Our baby cribs were covered in brightly coloured in lead based paint. There were no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinet’s and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets to wear, not to mention the risks we took when hitchhiking. When we were children, we rode in cars without seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of an old Ute on a warm day was always a special treat. In those days, we drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We ate cakes, bread and butter and drank cordial with sugar in it, but we were very seldom over weight because we were always outside running around and playing. We shared cordial with all our friends from the same bottle and nobody actually died from this. We would spend hours and hours making Billy carts out of any old scraps we managed to find around the place then race down the hill, only to find that we did not have any brakes to stop. After running into the scrub a few times we managed to over-come that problem. We would leave home in the early hours of the morning and play all day as long as we were home when the streetlights came on. No body really knew where we were all day. There were no such things as electronic calculators that fitted inside your pocket; they did addition on their fingers. To subtract, they had some of their fingers amputated. Wouldn’t be nice to be back there again? My family was so poor my mothe

Book excerpt: In Genesis 46, Jacob calls God his shepherd as he blesses Joseph’s sons Manasseh and Ephraim. In the beloved Psalm 23, David sings about what it means that the Lord is his shepherd. In Isaiah 40, God promises to come to His people and tend to them like a shepherd. In John 10, Jesus says He is the Good Shepherd. In Hebrews 13, He is called the Great Shepherd. In 1 Peter 5, He is the Chief Shepherd. This is only a sample of places in the Bible where God’s relationship with His people is equated with that of a shepherd to His sheep. I became a pastor shortly after we started raising sheep, and I began seeing similarities between being a pastor and a shepherd. This makes sense since pastor comes from the Greek word poimen, which means shepherd. Jesus taught in parables, earthly stories with a spiritual meaning. That’s the idea behind this little book. I wrote stories about our dealings with our sheep that illustrate similarities I saw between my relationship with my sheep and my relationship with the people I shepherded in the church. I hope that these stories will entertain you and also give you insight as well. For pastors, maybe it will even help you in your ministry. Being aware of this has helped me in mine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a companion volume to Schmalenberger's acclaimed CSS title The Miracles Of Jesus And Their Flip Side, this book takes an imaginative look at twelve of Jesus' parables by examining their traditional interpretation (the "hit" side), and then turning them on their ear to see the "other side of the story" -- a different perspective with relevance for our modern-day lives (the "flip" side). For example, in addition to warning about the dangers of building on sand instead of rock, Schmalenberger considers how to rebuild after a flood. In the parable of the wedding banquet, he discusses the people who were invited live together after the undeserved feast. And in the parable of the lost sheep, he talks about how the shepherd needs the support of the "ninety-nine never lost" in order for him to go after the one lost sheep. Schmalenberger's punch, contemporary language, and narrative style produce hard-hitting and inspirational messages that offer a unique new twist in the interpretation of some old and marvelous gospel teachings -- his "flip side" approach is sure to add freshness and sparkle to your preaching. Jerry L. Schmalenberger has taught speech and communication at Wittenberg University and Urbana College and was a parish pastor for 29 years, serving some of the nation's largest Lutheran congregations. Recently retired as professor of parish ministry and president of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, California, he now serves as a Global Mission Volunteer for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Schmalenberger has preached and taught throughout the world, most recently teaching with the faculty of the Lutheran Seminary in Hong Kong. Schmalenberger has also taught at seminaries in Germany, Jamaica, Argentina, Suriname, Indonesia, and Liberia. A graduate of Wittenberg University and Hamma School of Theology in Springfield, Ohio (where he received his D.Min. degree), Schmalenberger was honored by Wittenberg with a D.Div. degree.

As the former amateur golfer’s life continues to unfold in a reasonably satisfying, somewhat predictable pattern, Joe is enjoying a happy marriage, working as a bank executive, and gearing up for retirement. But as he is about to discover, life has a way of throwing a curveball that changes everything. Following a weekend spent watching the Masters golf tournament on television, Joe is working at his desk when he receives a message from God on his computer screen that tells him he has been chosen to deliver an inspirational message to the world that the seemingly impossible is possible. God tells Joe he is going to play in the Masters the following spring, and if his faith is strong enough, he will win. As Joe embarks on a spiritual journey to make a difference, he must learn to face his fears, have confidence in his abilities, and commit to his goals before he can succeed. Walking with Herb is the inspirational story of an aging small-town banker’s attempt to fulfill his higher purpose and, with God’s help, prove that anything is possible.
